"The first settlers to locate in what is now the city of Greenwood were descendants of Dutch immigrants who came to New Amsterdam (New York) in 1642.
One of these descendants was Garret Brewer, who in 1825, settled on 160 acres, all of which are now in Greenwood.  He was born near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1782.  His parents, John and Jennie (VanArsdale) Brewer moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, where he remained until he followed the Smocks to Greenwood.
Garret Brewer, like his ancestors, was a devout Christian and a strong believer in education.  He was first ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church and the First Sunday School was organized in his cabin.  This cabin stood about where the John Bailey's now live on Woodland Drive.
He died in 1860 and was buried in the old Presbyterian cemetery on North Madison Avenue, which was once a part of his farm.  Later, he was moved to the Greenwood Cemetery which was also a part of his original land.
A son, Abram, was born in the cabin in 1830.  He spent his entire life on the Brewer farm and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Two granddaughters of Garret's, Mrs. Jessie Bishop and Mrs. Hattie Sanford are living on West Main street in Greenwood, a short distance from where they and their father, Abram, were born.
Two great-grandchildren, Clarence Bishop and Stella Mae (Bishop) Toombs, who, also, live on West Main Street, were born on the old Brewer property at Madison and Euclid which is near Garret's homesite.  One great-great-grandchild, Lawrence Toby Toombs is the youngest descendant of Garret Brewer living in Greenwood."
