Ellis Barron

Ellis Barron was born about 1633. (1) Many trees says he was born 22 Apr 1633. (2) An Ellis Barron married a Hannah Hawkins,  in Watertown on 14 Oct 1653 and there is only one record of that marriage.  However, there were two men named Ellis Barron who were marrying a Hannah Hawkins at about the same time.  Ellis Barron, the elder, was was marrying as his second wife, a Hannah Hawkins, widow of Timothy Hawkins. His son, Ellis Barron, was marrying a daughter of his father's second wife.  It is not known for sure which marriage took place on 14 Oct 1653.  But since Susanna Barron, daughter of the elder Elis Barron, married Stephen Randall on the same day, it seems that there was a triple marriage of Ellis Barron Sr. to his 2nd wife, his son Ellis Barron Jr. to a daughter of that 2nd wife, and his daughter Susannah Barron to Stephen Randall.  (3)
His wife, Hannah Hawkins, died on 3 Jan 1674 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (4)   He married Lydia Prescott, widow of Jonas Fairbanks, sometime after the death of his first wife. (5) Ellis Barron wrote his will in Lancaster, Middlesex, MA on 31 Dec 1711 and it was proved 7 Oct 1712.  (6)  He named his wife, Lydia, and children: Timothy Barron, Ellis Barron, Mehitable Parker, Hannah Cady, Elizabeth Philbrick and Sarah Tailor.  His widow Lydia (Fairbanks crossed out) Barron, gave bond as Executrix on 7 Oct 1712 and Jabez Fairbank was her bondsman. ..(7).

Source: Elinor Skeate, Groton Newsletter, 1993

"One of the earliest families at Groton, was ELLIS BARRON II, b. Apr. 22, 1633, Watertown, MA. He came with the first "planting" of the new town, in the early 1660's, along with a number of other families who first came from England to Watertown, MA. He was wounded in the Indians wars, where he served as one of the soldiers from Groton. His first name is variously written, Elias, Eliz, Ellis. His parents were Ellis and Grace Barron of Watertown, MA.
At least one of his sons, John, returned after the burning of Groton. In the 1716 division of lands, Elias Barron had a 15 acre share, his son John, had a 7 acre right. Each share included about 50 acres of land, and one voting right. Consequently, those with more shares had a bigger say in the affairs of the town."

This Ellis Barron apparently does not have a son John.  He did, however, have a brother, John Barron.

(3) marriage of Ellis Barron to Hannah Hawkins and marriage of Susannah Barron to Stephen Randall

There was only one record of an Ellis Barron marrying an Hannah Hawkins, but the most likely scenario is that there were two such marriages on that same day since a daughter of Ellis Barron was also marrying on the same day.

Elliz Barron and Hannah Hawkins maryed the 14: 10 m. (1653)
Stephen Randall and Susan Barron maryed the 14: 10 m. (1653)

Timothy Hawkiins, the father of Hannah Hawkins who married Ellis Barron, died 27 Sep 1651.  The widow of Timothy Hawkins and the mother of this Hannah Hawkins was Anne Hammond.  She married the father of this Ellis Barron sometime after the death of her first husband.  She, therefore, could also be the Hannah Hawkins who married Ellis Barron on 14 Oct 1653.  She was probably married to Ellis Barron, the father of this Ellis Barron, before 27 Apr 1654.  On that date Ellis Barron took on the care of  her daughter, Mehitable Hawkins.
