Mrs. Agnes I. Barklow Roe
One of Portsmouth’s life long citizens and most respected women was called to the Great Beyond abut 8:45 o’clock last night when the final summons came to Mrs. Agnes I. Barklow Roe, widow of Attorney Benjamin E. Roe at her home 820 Third street. Complications caused death after an illness dating from last March. She had been seriously ill and bedfast for the last five weeks. Death did not come as an unexpected shock to her immediate relatives and friends who realized her condition was grave for the past few days.
Mrs. Agnes I. Barklow Roe was a daughter of Stout Barklow and Sarah Jane Jeffords Barklow. She was born Oct. 20, 1854, in Portsmouth where she spent all her life with the exception of eighteen months in Greenup County, Ky. She attended the local public schools and was a graduate of the Portsmouth high school being one of a class of thirteen on June 25, 1874. For many years she taught school here and numbered among Portsmouth citizens are many of her former pupils.
Her husband was Benjamin E. Roe, a lawyer who was well known in Greenup county. He was also prominent in Democratic politics and was known to many throughout Greenup county as "Bud" Roe. He passed away about twenty years ago.
Mrs. Roe was the last of the immediate family of Barklows. Her nearest surviving relative is an aunt, Mrs. Rose Brennen of Dayton, Ky. She also leaves several cousins in this city.
Mrs. Roe possessed a kind and loving disposition and throughout the city had legions of friends who will be sorry to learn of her death. She was a member of the Fist Christian church of the city and was also active [unreadable] Spencer Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Funeral services will be held at the home on Third street Saturday morning at ten o’clock after which the body will be taken to Greenup where services will be held in the Christian church at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Greenup."
