Sara Du Trieux
by Susan Brooke
Mar 2021

Her parents arrived in New Amsterdam about 1624 and Sara Du Trieux was one of the first children born in the New World.  Her older brother had been born back in Holland in Oct 1623, so it is estimated Sara was born about 1625. When she married Isaac De Forest on 9 Jun 1641 she must have been about 16 years old.  Isaac De Forest was 24.
About a month after their marriage Isaac made a contract to build a home on the land of his bouwery. The building would be 30 feet by 18 feet, "with 2 4-light windows and 2 3-light windows."  The kitchen was in a separate building. A year later their first child was born. Witnesses at Jesse's baptism were Philippe du Trieux, Sara's father, and Rachel de Forest, Isaac's older sister, who was married to Jean de la Montagne, a very prominent man.  Unfortunately, the baby and his aunt Rachel both died shortly after the baptism. There was also an Indian raid about that time, so they moved into the city to be closer to the fort. A few years later in 1655 there was another Indian attack and the home Isaac had built was probably destroyed.
It must have been a very hard time for this young mother.  In their first 8 years of marriage she had birthed 6 children, but only one child,  Susanna, born in 1645, survived to adulthood. Then in 1650 they baptized Johannes and he and the next three children all lived to adulthood. In 1653 they moved to Brouwer St. where Sara may have had a more settled life.
Her husband, Isaac De Forest, had formed a partnership for a very successful brewery. In 1658 he paid passage for a servant to come live with them, "She arrived early in March, 1658, but within a few days Isaack de Forest was in court, saying that 'she sought to get out of the house as soon as she was with him, abusing him and his wife very spitefully.' "  (3) At that time her oldest living child, Susannah, was 13 and she had four more children ranging from 8 to 1 year old.
Sara and her husband lived through Indian attacks and British invasions, but they survived.  Their last child, David, was born in 1669 when Sara was in her mid 40's.  Of her 14 childbirths,  7 survived to adulthood.  She and her husband Isaac drew up their wills in 1672.  Isaac was "sickly" at that time.  He died two years later leaving Sara a widow with two young children.  Maria was 8 and David only 5.  The older children were young adults and Susanna was married.
Sara De Trieux lived another 18 years after the death of her husband. She was a witness for the first born children of her children: Johannes (son Nicholas), Philip (daughter Sara), Isaac (son Isaac) and Henricus (daughter Sara).  She died in 1692 at the age of 67.
