He married Nancy Ellen King on January 20, 1880 in Porterville, Crawford Co., Illinois. Nancy Ellen King was born February 11, 1860 in Palestine, Illinois, the daughter of James King and Elizabeth Dodd. She died April 12, 1948 in Vining, Clay Co., Kansas.

An article in the "Who's Who" section of the Clifton News on October 24, 1935 reads: "Fifty-five years ago, Sam Cain, who had been living in the Vining vicinity for a year, returned to his home town of Palestine, Illinois in January, married the girl of his choice, Ellen King, and brought her to Kansas in February. And in this community this couple has spent all of their married life. Just two visits have the Cain’s made to Illinois. Their first voyage was twenty-five years after their marriage and their second trip was several years ago when their grandson, Harold Woodruff, and Alice Woodruff, his wife, accompanied them to Crawford county, Illinois for a big family reunion. Sam Cain, the son of Lewis and Sarah Cain, was born in Ohio. There were seven children in the family, two girls and five boys. The family moved from Ohio to Crawford county, near Palestine, Illinois, when Sam Cain was a young man. He had obtained his education in Ohio before coming to Illinois. Mrs. Cain’s birthplace was on a farm near Palestine, Illinois. Her father and mother were J.M. and Elizabeth King. The father who was of Irish descent, was a native of Ohio, but the mother, of Dutch nationality, was born in Illinois. Mrs. Cain, Nee Ellen King, one of five children, received her education and grew to womanhood in Illinois. None of the members of the King family ever came to Kansas to live except Mrs. Cain, but Mr. Cain’s brother, Ben, resided in this community for several years. A sister, Mrs. Latitia Wheeler, was a resident of Miltonvale. She passed away about a year ago. When Sam Cain’s came to this community in 1880, they lived on the Brook’s farm which is a mile west of Vining. Mr. Cain farmed the greater part of his life, but he also followed the carpenter trade for some years. Mr. and Mrs. Cain are the parents of two daughters and one son, Mrs. Harve Lewis (Stella) of the Clyde vicinity, Mrs. Lewis Woodruff (Emma) of Omega, Oklahoma, and Charles Cain of Vining. The thirteen grandchildren are the six children of Mrs. and Mrs. Harve Lewis, Lester, Raymond, Carrie, George, Evelyn and Esther; the five sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Woodruff, Harold and Jack Woodruff of Vining, Wallace, Chester and Volney of Omega, Oklahoma; and the daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cain, Mrs. Leonard Boughen (June) and Merle Cain. Mr. and Mrs. Cain have eight great grandchildren. They are the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lewis, Raymond Jr., Bernice, Norma Lee, Gloria, Donald and Shirley Ann; Vivian, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lewis and George Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis. Mrs. Cain enjoys making quilts which she says is her hobby. She is a faithful member of the Christian church and an interested worker in the Ladies Aid Society and in Mrs. Louanna Banner’s Sunday School class of which she is a member. The Cain’s moved to Vining five years ago from the Cusac farm on which they had lived for eighteen years. In addition to the two trips to Illinois, the Cain’s have been to Oklahoma two or three times with Harold Woodruff’s to visit their daughter. These pioneer farmers who have experienced the hardships of early times, have been loyal citizens of the community always, good neighbors who are well liked and highly respected by everyone."
Obituary of Samuel Gilbert Cain was printed in the Clifton News, Clifton, Kansas on December 3, 1936. An abstract of the obituary follows: "Pioneer Resident Had Lived In Vining Vicinity Since The Year 1880. Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Cain Friday afternoon at the Vining Christian Church with Rev. William Oder in charge. Interment was in the Vining cemetery. Samuel Gilbert Cain, son of Lewis and Sarah Cain, was born at Sumerset, Ohio, on August 24, 1852 and passed away at his home in Vining, Kansas on Nov. 26, 1936 at the age of 84 years, 3 months and one day. He was united in marriage to Miss Ellen King in Porterville, Illinois on January 20, 1880 and came to Vining in February of the same year. Since that time they have lived in and near Vining. There were three daughters and two sons born to them. One daughter and one son have preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two brothers, B.J. Cain and Alvah Cain, both of Oblong, Ill., two daughters, Mrs. M.H. Lewis of Clyde, Kansas, and Mrs. Lewis Woodruff of Omego, Oklahoma, one son, Charles Cain, of Vining, Kansas, thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren besides a number of other relatives."
Obituary of Nancy Ellen Cain was printed in the Clifton News, Clifton, Kansas on April 22, 1948. An abstract of the obituary follows: " Nancy Ellen King, daughter of James and Elizabeth King, was born February 11, 1860 at Palestine, Illinois, and departed from this life at the age of 88 years, two months and one day, at Clay Center, Kansas. She was married to Samuel G. Cain in 1880 in Crawford County, Illinois and left immediately for Kansas. To this union were born five children, two of whom and her husband preceded her in death. Those surviving are: Mrs. Stella Lewis of Clyde, Kansas, Mrs. Emma Woodruff of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Chas. R. Cain of Vining. She has been a member of the Vining Christian Church for 56 years. Besides her children she leaves one brother, George King of Oblong, Illinois. The funeral services were held at the Vining Christian Church, Thursday afternoon, April 15, at 2:00 o'clock, the Pastor, Drexel Forell, officiating. Interment was in the Vining cemetery in the family plot."
