This webpage will give you the information that I have collected so far about Patrick Caine and James Cain, Sen. both of Perry Co, Reading twp, Ohio. I believe both of them to be related to our Cain's but haven't proved any connection so far.
Patrick M Caine
I have very little information about Patrick Cain. According to census records he and his wife were born approximately 1760 to 1770.
The first time that I have found information about Patrick is in the 1818 Reading Township Voters List, Perry Co. Ohio. This listing was an article in the New Lexington Democratic Herald on April 15, 1876, page 3, and gave a list of 240 names. Names that have a connection with our Cain family are: Patrick Cain, Sol Moler, Henry Moler, and Louis Brandt, Jr.
He is listed in the 1820 census of Reading twp, Perry Co. Ohio with a wife and both of them are over 45 years of age; along with 2 males under 10 years of age and 1 female 10 - 16 years and 1 female 16-26 years of age in the family. Patrick is living next door to Lewis Brant, Lewis Brant, Sr. and John Caine. Patrick is engaged in agriculture.
He had moved by 1826 because he is listed that year in the Personal Property Tax List of Barefield twp, N.9 and owns 1 horse and 2 neat cattle (instead of living in Reading Twp). This tax list also shows his name as Patrick M. Caine. He is in the tax lists from 1826 - 1834 but not in any of the property tax lists so he apparently didn't own any land. There are no Personal Property tax lists for 1835, 1837 or 1838 for Reading or Barefield townships. John and Patrick Caine are not listed in the 1836 lists.
Then in 1830 census he is still in Barefield twp, Perry Co. Ohio and his age and his wife's ages are 60-70 years with 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 15-20 and 2 females 10-15. Because of his age and his wife's age I would presume these are grandchildren living with them.
Another Cain family that is shown in Bearfield twp of Perry County is Abel and Sarah Cain. Several researchers believe Abel Cain and Mahala Cain Anderson are brother and sister. There is more information on Abel Cain and Mahala Cain Anderson here.
Another Cain researcher sent me an obituary she had found that shows Patrick listed:
Necrological Reports and Annual Peoceedings of the Alumni Assn. of Princeton Theological Seminary-- 1891
"Ellery Bascom, son of James and Helena (Wales) Bascom was born July 5, 1798 at Chester, Mass. Mr. Bascom never settled as a pastor. His health failed and he became infirm, removed to Janesville, Wis., preached one year at Decatur, Wis and settled on a farm, occasionally supplying some needy congregation. Hw then spent two years in Ohio, resided about 1870-75 at Jefferson Iowa, then about two years, 1875-77 at Duluth Minn and finally removed to Upand, Jewell County, Kansas where he died of consumption, December 25, 1880 in the 83d year of his age. Mr. Bascom was twice married--1. June 24, 1833 to Miss Elvira Bissell, daughter of Justus Bissell, of Aurora, Portage Co Ohio. 2. August 25, 1871 to Mahala Cain, daughter of Patrick Cain, deceased, of Somerset, Ohio, and widow of James Young Anderson. She survives him, He had no children."
Timeline
This is all the information that I have on Patrick and his wife. I have been unable to locate him on any more census records or any estate papers, etc.
James & Sarah Caine/Cain, Sr.
James Cain, Sen. is living a few doors from John and Elizabeth Cain in the 1840 census of Perry Co, Reading Twp, Ohio. The census reads: James Cain, Sen; 1 male age 40-50; 1 female age 30-40. No children are listed.
In the 1850 census of Vinton Co, Swan Twp, Ohio (page 330) it lists a John Cain (which is probably a census takers mistake writing John instead of James). The census reads: John Cain age 57, male, farmer, value of real estate $200, born Penn.; Sarah Cain, age 44, female, born Ohio; Julian age 6 female born Ohio. I believe this to be James because the census of 1860 shows the same family with the name of James Cain. All the information from the census' collaborate that this is the James Cain, Sen. from Reading Twp, Perry Co. Ohio.
Vinton Co. Ohio Marriages: Julia Cain married Patrick Farley on Nov 8, 1858 by Joe Kaler J.P.
The 1860 census for Vinton Co, Elk twp, Ohio (page 341) reads: James Cain, age 68, day laborer, value of Real Estate $250, value of Personal Property $50, born PA; Sarah A. Cain, age 54, born Ohio; Julia A. Varley, age 17, female, born Ohio.
By 1870 the census (McArthur, Elk twp, Vinton Co Ohio) doesn't list James--- just Sarah Kane, age 69, keeping house, value of real estate $250. When Sarah died, she willed all her property and estate to David Rannells so I would presume that the daughter, Julia Ann Caine Farley, was deceased already.
Since John moved to Vinton Co after the death of Elizabeth and this James Sen. also has moved to Vinton Co.------I believe this James might have been a brother. This James was born about 1793 in Pennsylvania and John was born in about 1794 in either Pennsylvania or Virginia.
Land Deed: James S. Cain to James Gibson; October 30, 1854; Vinton County, Ohio----- Know all men by these presents that we James S. Cain & Sarah Cain his wife of the County of Vinton and State of Ohio. In consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars in hand paid by James Gibson we have bargained and sold and do hereby grant bargain sell and convey unto the said James Gibson his heirs and assigns forever the following premises situate in the county of Vinton in the State of Ohio and bounded and described as follows to wit: The North west quarter of South East quarter of section twenty seven (27) Township Twelve (12) of Range seventeen (17) containing forty acres more or less. To have and to hold said premises with the appurtenances unto the said James Gibson his heirs and assigns forever. And the said James S. Cain and Sarah Cain for themselves and their heirs Executors and administrators doth hereby covenant with the said James Gibson his heirs and assigns that we are lawfully seized of the premises aforesaid; that the premises are free and clear from all incumbrances whatsoever. And that we will forever warrant and defend the same with the appurtenances unto the said James Gibson his heirs and assigns against the lawful claim of all persons whomsoever. In Testimony whereof the said James S. Cain & Sarah Cain have hereunto set their hands and seals this 30th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four. James S. Land Deed: Henry & Belinda Raynolds to James S. Cain; October 20, 1854; Vinton Co, Ohio------- Know all men by these presents that we Henry Raynolds and Belinda Raynolds of the County of Vinton in the State of Ohio in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars in hand paid by James S. Cain have bargained and sold, and do hereby grant bargain sell and convey unto the said James S Cain his heirs and assigns forever the following premises situate in the County of Vinton in the State of Ohio and bounded and described as follow, to wit; In Lot Number one hundred and sixty eight (168) in the Town of McArthur in Vinton County Ohio which will be seen by reference to the plat of said Town To have and to hold said premises, with the appurtenances unto the said James S Cain his heirs and assigns forever and the said Henry Raynolds for his heirs executors and administrators doth hereby covenant with the said James S. Cain his heirs and assigns that he lawfully seized of the premises aforesaid; That the premises are free and clear from all incumbrances whatsoever; and that will forever warrant and defend the same, with the appurtenances unto the said James S. Cain his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever. Will & Probate of James Cain-- May 15, 1864; File Box 102, Vinton Co, Ohio
The following is a true copy of the last will and Testament of James Cain late of the Town of McArthur, County of Vinton and State of ohio deceased together with the testimony and order of probate thereon. towit:
To all whom it may concern, be it know that I James Cain of the County of Vinton and State of Ohio being of lawful age of sound mind and memory; but infirm in health and knowing the uncertainty of life and certainty of death do make this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows to wit: For and in consideration of kind attention long bestowed on me in my feeble condition of health by my beloved wife Sarah Ann and for the love and affection I bear towards her as my wife. I give and bequeath to her all my property both personal and real of which I may die seized and possessed that is to say, all my household and kitchen furniture and In Lot. number one hundred and sixty eight (168) in the Town of McArthur, Vinton County Ohio with all it appurtenances. In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal this fifteenth day of may in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty four. James Cain (seal) Signed and acknowledged in presence of us who have signed as witnesses in presence of each other. J.A. Fellow. David Jones--- The State of Ohio, Vinton County S.S. J.A. Fellow and David Jones after being duly sworn depose and say that we were present at the execution of the last will and testament of James Cain, hereunto annexed: that we saw the said testator subscribe said will and heard him publish and ordain the same to be his last will and testament and that the said testator at the time of executing the same was of sound mind and memory, and not under any constraint; and that we signed the same as witnesses at his request and in his presence, and in the presence of each other. The following is a true copy of the order of probate thereon. To wit: The State of Ohio Vinton County SS. In Vinton Probate. Be in remembered that on the 23rd day of August A.D. 1865. The last Will and testament of James Cain late of the Town of McArthur, in the County of Vinton and State of Ohio, deceased, was produced in open court by Sarah Ann Cain the widow, and thereupon came J.A. Fellow and David Jones the subscribing witnesses to said will and after being duly sworn and examined by me in the open court and ? testified to the due execution and attestation of the said will and which said testimony was reduced to writing and by said witnesses respectively subscribed and filed with said will; and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court by the testimony that said will was duly executed and attested, and that the said testator at the time of executing the same, was of full and lawful age, and of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not under any restraint. It is therefore by the court ordered that said will be and is admitted to Probate; and so it further ordered that said will and testimony in support of the same, together with the order of Probate therefore be and is admitted to record in the Records of Wills within and for the County of Vinton and State of ohio. And Sarah Ann Cain the widow appearing in open Court and therefore elected to take under the will of her deceased husband James Cain. Richard Craig Probate Judge.
Will and Probate of Sarah A. Cain-- June 7, 1873; File Box 102; Vinton County, Ohio
I, Sarah A. Cain of McArthur is the State of Ohio, hereby make my last will and testament. I give and bequeath to David W Rannells all my property both real and personal that I may die possessed of. Said David W. Rannells is hereby made my executor and invested with full power to carry out the provisions of this my last will charging him with the special duty of seeing my remains decently interred and the erection of tombstones to mark their resting place. In Testimony whereof I hereto set my hand this 7th day of June A.D. 1873. Sarah A. Cain.
Signed and published as her last will and testament by the said Sarah A Cain in presence of us, who in her presence and the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our names as witnesses. Samuel R Bay of Elk Tp, V.Co.; Alex Ward of McArthur, O.; Wm J. Rannells of McArthur, O.
Proof of Will-- The State of Ohio, Vinton County SS. Personally appeared in open court Alexander Ward and William J. Rannells subscribing witnesses to the last will and testament of Sarah A Cain, late of said County, deceased, who being first duly sworn, according to law, depose and say that the foregoing in the last will and testament of the said Sarah A. Cain, deceased, that they subscribed their names as attesting witnesses thereto at the request of the said testatrix and in her presence and in the presence of each other and that she signed the same in their presence and acknowledged the same to be her last will and testament; that the said testatrix at the time of execution of same was of full age, of sound mind and memory and not under any restraint. Order of Probate and Record: On this 9th day of May AD 1874 was produced in open court the last will and testament of Sarah A. Cain. late of this County, deceased at the same time came Alexander Ward and William J Rannells subscribing witnesses thereto who being first duly sworn, testified to the ? execution and attention thereof which said testimony was reduced to writing and by these severally subscribed. Whereupon the Court being satisfied that said will was the last will and testament of the said Sarah A. Cain, deceased, that the same was duly executed and attached and that said testatrix was at the time of executing the same of sound mind and memory and not under any restraint, it was ordered that said will and testimony and this order of Probate thereon be recorded in the Record of wills and that said testimony so reduce to writing be filed with said will. Tombstone of James S. Cain and Sarah Ann ? Cain
James and Sarah are buried in the old McArthur Cemetery, McArthur, Vinton Co., Ohio. This picture was taken in the May, 2000. There was a flag at the tombstone representing that James was a veteran. We have been unable to find veteran or military records. Some dates on the tombstone are probably incorrect. The words and numbers were very hard to read even with taking a pencil rubbing and using baby powder on the stone.
One side is: James Cain, born 8- 11- 1786 ----- died 3- 24- 186?
The other side is: Sarah Cain, born 9-8-1806 ---- died 4-4-1887

"Mt. Zion Cemetery, Swan Twp. List Furnished by mrs. George W. Karnes (ed note: probably a list of veterans in the cemetery) Mrs. Karnes thinks that a man by the name of James Cain or Kain is buried in the old cemetery at mcArthur. He was a soldier in the War of 1812."
