Vessels trading at Bermuda are entered under many names or
types in the 1600's. These include: barque, brigantine, dogger, ketch
or catch, frigott or frigate, galley, galley-frigott, galliott, pinke,
pinnance, shallop, ship and sloop.
unnamed Spanish ship
1603, Diego Ramirez, captain of a Spanish galleon, after spending 3 weeks on the island
files a map and description of Bermuda with his principals in Spain.
Sea Venture
The "Sea Venture", burthen abt 240 tons and keel length possibly 75 ft, wrecked
at Bermuda 28 July 1609. She was built in East Anglia? in 1603. Passengers included Sir Thomas
Gates, Governor for Virginia, Sir George Somers, Admiral of the flotilla, William
Strachney, Secretary-elect for the Virginia Company, Silvester Jourdain, Joseph
Chard, and John Proctor. (see also passenger list).
Deliverance
The "Deliverance" left Bermuda for the Virginia colony 10 May 1610, arriving on
24 May at Jamestown, VA. Shortly after the wreck of the "Sea Venture", the keel
of the ship "Deliverance" was laid at Building's Bay, near St George's, using
salvage from the "Sea Venture". She was abt 80 tons, about 57 feet in length
with 64 ft foremast,72 ft mainmast, and 44 ft mizzen mast.
Patience
The "Patience", abt 30 tons, left Bermuda with the "Deliverance" on 10
May 1610; returned from Virginia in 1610 with Sir George Somers who died in St
George's, Bermuda on 19 November 1610. The "Patience " returned to England in
1611 carrying Sir George Somers" body, commanded by his nephew, Captain Matthew
Somers. Three men were left behind to hold claim to the islands.
Plough
On 11 July 1612, the "Plough" brought Governor Moore and 60 settlers, the
first settlers intended for the islands.

Martha
The "Martha" arrived at Bermuda with 60 settlers, June 1613.
Elizabeth
1613, the "Elizabeth" arrived with 40 settlers on her second visit.
Blessing
The "Blessing" arrived with 100 settlers in 1614.
Starre
The "Starre" arrived with 180 settlers in 1614.
Margaret
The "Margaret" arrived in 1614 along with two frigates bringing the surveyor Bartlet
and others.
Welcome
The "Welcome" took away Governor Moore and left provisions in 1615.
Edwin
The "Edwin" arrived in 1615, bringing supplies. 1616, she brought
"many" passengers and proceeded to the West Indies, returning from there in the
same year.
George
The "George", May 1616, brought Captain Daniel Tucker and others, and
returned to England. She arrived again 11 march 1624/5.
Sea Flower
The "Sea Flower" with Captain Gardener arrived 1616. She arrived again in
1619, bringing a preacher, and proceeding for Virginia. She is again mentioned in 1632
with John Rose master.
Hopewell
The "Hopewell" with Captain Powell arrived in 1616 with passengers and
proceeded to the West Indies. She returned with 3 prizes in 1617. Again in 26 July 1644, a
"Hopewell" of the Somer Islands, John Sessiones factor, brings cargo from
Barbados.
Neptune
The "Neptune" was sent to Bermuda for the purpose of whale fishing.
Diana
The "Diana" was the first magazine ship to arrive and brought away 30,000 lbs of
tobacco in 1618.
Giliflower / Gillyflower
The "Giliflower" arrived with supplies 1619. She returned the same year and left
for Newfoundland. 11 August 1642, the "Gillyflower", Elias Pillgram
master, left Bermuda for Virginia.
Treasurer
The "Treasurer" arrived 1619 from Virginia.
Warwick
In 20 October 1619, the
"Warwick" arrived with Governor Nathaniel Butler and was wrecked in a
hurricane the end of November.
The
Bermuda Company sent him to the island aboard the
Warwick. The ship, owned by the
Earl of Warwick, went down in Castle Harbour.
San Antonio
One of Butler's first acts as
governor (1619) was to build two cedar boats to search for Spanish wrecks.
In 1621, for example, Butler lost no time salvaging the wreck of the
San Antonio, which had been
sailing from Havana with a Spanish treasure fleet. Butler writes of spending
10 days at the wreck with boats and crew. He notes weighing several cannons,
a cable possibly used as an anchor rope, and miscellaneous cargo goods, but
makes no mention of finding treasure. But the Bermuda Company
continued to look. Soon the group sent out a surveyor named Richard Norwood,
who arrived with a diving bell and instructions to seek Spanish treasure. We
don't know whether Norwood was successful, but he did survey the island
thoroughly.
Garland
The "Garland" , master William Wye, arrived in November of 1619, a ship of 25
tons (burthen 250 tons), sent in June of 1619 from London, with 45 passengers for Mr John
Farrar's plantation in Virginia. Unable to proceed, she returned to England in January
1620. (see also "court actions" for detailsand "passenger lists" for
some of the crew and passengers)
Joseph
The "Joseph", a magazine ship, arrived August 1620 and returned with 20,000 lbs
of tobacco. Simon Day, master
Tiger
The "Tiger", of London, arrived 13 September 1622. She left Bermuda again 1629
and 20 Jan 1631.
Successe
In October 1622, a bark (probably the "Successe" of Barnstable) arrived in
Castle Harbour. Gov. Nathaniel Butler left without permission by this vessel abt 25
October 1622.
Darlinge
In November 1622, the "Darlinge" arrived with the new Governor Captain John
Bernard. She and another vessel (the "Thomas"?) brought 140 passengers.
Marmaduke
In 1623, The "Marmaduke" arrived, John Dennis master, bound for Virginia.
She left Bermuda with a load of tobacco September 1626.
James
In 1624/5, the "James" sailed from Bermuda, for Virginia, Toby Ffolgate
master.
Success
The "Success" of Barnstable returned from Bermuda in 1624, Mr Antonye Facey
master, John Delbridge merchant. She carried 7566 lbs of tobacco.
Larke
The "Larke" arrived in September 1625, Mr Richard Weller master.
Victory
The "Victory" arrived in March 1625/6, William Kempthorn master.
Olive
The "Olive", a bark owned by John Delbridge of London, sailed May 1626.
In 1628, she brought Delbridge 13,120 lbs tobacco from Bermuda.
Peter Bonaventura
22 March 1627, The "Peter Bonaventura" left Bermuda, and was captured by the
Dutch at Torbay and carried to Dunkirk. Her master was Captain Thomas Sherwin. (see
"court actions" 1631).
Exchange
The "Exchange" sailed from Bermuda for England on 16 April 1627.
Somer Islands Pinnance
Of Barnstable, the "Somer Islands Pinnance" sailed 1627.
Friendship
Of Barnstable, the bark "Friendship" arrived in November 1628. The Bermuda
Company forbade all trade with her, but a petition by the island residents resulted in
allowing John Delbridge, owner to discharge his cargo. Delbridge's nephew
(name?) was master.
Pearle
The "Pearle" arrived 1633, bringing clothing from the Company.
Peeter
The "Peeter", a Dutch ship left Bermuda 14 october 1633.
Thunder
10 November 1633, the "Thunder" of New England arrived and left for Virginia 2
January 1634. John Tilley, master.
Elizabeth & Anne
A magazine ship, the "Elizabeth & Anne" , Peter Braesler pilot and ___
Smith master arrived 4 December 1633. She returned 4 October 1652 from Barbados, Thomas
Astwood master, and brought recall letters for Rev. Nathaniel White in
Eleutheria. She arrived again 24 July 1655.
True-Love
10 June 1635, the "True-Love" sailed from Gravesend with 125 passengers bound
for Bermuda, Robert Dennis master. Passengers: see "passenger list"

Dorset
The "Dorset" sailed from Gravesend, Kent with John Flower master, and 95
passengers for Bermuda 30 September 1635. Passsengers: see "passenger lists"

Merchant Bonaventure
Thomas Vesey, 24 August 1636: to Mary Harbottle to sue for wages on the
merchant Bonaventure on a voyage to the West Indies, Virginia, and

5 February 1638, the "Charles, Robert Dennis left Bermuda for Trinidad and
England. The "Charles" of Bristol, 80 tons, was sold to Vyncent Reynor
1646.
La Viga
The Spanish store ship "La Viga" and her tender "El Galgo" both ran
ashore at Bermuda in 1639 while sailing with the Royal Fleet, guarding the Indies route
under the command of Don Geronimo Gomez de Sandoval, chevalier of the Order of St

The "Return", Scarlet, arrieved October 1648.
Jonathan and Abigail
The ship "Jonathan and Abigail", two years earlier had been freighted for
a voyage from Gravesend to Virginia. The condition of the ship was so bad that most of her
goods were damaged on the way to Barbados Islands and a great number of passengers and
crew died through lack of food. An inspection carried out in Barbados confirmed that the
ship was in pitiful condition. The ship however sailed on to Virginia, where no merchant
would load cargo into her until repairs had been made. These Thomas Jauncey,
an agent, and Captain Page, master of the ship, promised to do. After considerable delays,
the ship arived in London, at the end of a voage that had taken 13-14 months. 36
passengers and 12 crew had died.

Braine commander thereof, sailed from these islands the 26th of Ffebruarie uppon the
expedition aforesaid, whereof Captian William Sayle went commander in cheefe
thereunto called and made choice of for the manadging the said honble expedition by the
Right Honble Proprietor (Resident in England) Agents Sir John Youmans Captain Joseph
West, &c., since their arrivall in these Islands as aforesaid. (Port Royal is in
North Carolina, between Savannah and Charleston). (reference: Lefroy. Memorials of the
Bermudas pp737). Sir John Youmans was one of eight Knights created by
Charles II. The vessel was driven into Bermuda by bad weather and underwent repairs. At
Bermuda Sir Youmans resigned his command and Colonel Wm Sayle,
although an old man, took charge of the party. Bermudians were urged to join the new
settlement. Sayle founded the first English colony in South Carolina.

Memorand. That upon divers complaints made unto his Excelly of the great annoyance
to ships and boats in ye Towne Harbour, from ye Pinke Bachelors Adventure, by breeding
wormes in ye said harbour, his Excellency thereupon commanded Capt John Hubbard
Depty Sher to remove ye sd Pinke, who answered (as by his letter dated ye 2nd day of June
1686, may appear) that he had nothing to doe with ye removall of ye said pinke, desiring
to be excused for that he had no judgement in those things; James Smailes
being required to remove ye said pinke by ye Rt Honble Governor's order, delivered him by
Lieut. William Jones, Capt Samll Brangman, Mr John
Huchins, Councellors, Capt John Tucker, John Jauncye, Depty
Sectry. The said Smailes answered that he would not concerne himself with

Josiah
June and August 1686, depositions before His Majesty's Council in Bermuda referred to the
"Josiah Frigatt", commander Bartholomew Sharpe of Bermuda.
"The deposition of Bartholomew Sharp, Comandr of ye Josiah
Frigatt aged about 36 years or thereabouts deposeth as followeth that on ye 7th of May
last past yt one Capt Paule Abney, Lieut. of ye Josiah Frigatt, near ye
house of Wm Storman, then and there did declare to me, Bartholomew
Sharp that he ye said Abney had been on board my Frigatt with
one Mr Richard Stafford he then was a prisoner, and further ye sd Abney
did declare to me that ye sd Stafford did deliver a writing or rather a
libell into ye hands of ye sd Abney and further ye sd Abney declard
to me yt he read in ye paper that it was Mr Staffords owne fault that he
was a prisoner so long and if he ye said Stafford would inlarge himself
that part of ye Country was ready to come downe to ye said Staffords assistance and to
take him out by force; this was the contents of ye sd writing as Capt Paule Abney
declares; and further ye sd depont declareth Mr Richard Stafford did
declare to him that he had received a letter from ye Country to ye same tenour as already
declard, and yt he ye sd Stafford did declare yt he had sent an answer into ye Country for
them to desist, for it rather added to his imprisonmt then ye releasmt and further ye sd
depont saith not."
"The deposition of Richard Stafford aged about 54 years yt he never
see, heard or knew of any letter or writing from any person or persons in or belonging to
any of ye tribes of ye Somers Islands in Bermuda relating any ways their bringing or
assisting me to be brought off the Josiah Frigatt duringye whole time of my being there a
prisoner unles it was for ye tendering bale but was told by Paul Abney yt
he had tould ye GoverE yt there was a letter to yt purpose & swore by God he contrived
it to scare ye GoverE and I asked him if Capt Sharp was concerned in ye
contriving thereof to which he swore noe, he was asleep and further saith not."
"Capt. George St Lo Esq aged about thirty two years or
thereabouts being duly sworne deposeth & saith that whereas an oath was to be
administered to severall persons before ye Rt Hoble ye GoverE on Wednesday ye 11th Augt
instant about George Bascomb & Willm Keels deteyning his maties forts
from ye GoverE, one Jonathan Stoakes going to lay his hands on ye bible
in order thereunto was hindered by one James Farmer, one of His Maties
Justices of ye Peace in these Islands, bidding Stoakes not to swear and
in a rustical manner went up to ye GoverE and said if Stoakes must swear
he would swear too, being as ready as ye other, when this depont thinking ye said James
Farmer would have struck ye GoverE stepped between them, when Farmer
cryed out, that this was what they had long expected wch was slavery, & now he found
it to be true and further saith not." (Bermuda HM Council records).
Experiment
Late 1691, Captain John Jennings, commander of the Experiment, and his men were
reported to have carried off John Porter, from court and placing him in
irons aboard the Experiment; during a court session concerning Christopher
Thurston, master of the Little John vs. John Porter. The Privy Council begs
that Jennings may be brought to trial for this offence. 12 Dec 1691 order of
the Privy Council to the Lords of the Admiralty- case of Capt Jennings

Amity
In 1691 Thomas Tew, a Rhode Islander and George Dew
arrived when Governor Isaac Richier was about to commission two sloops to
sail to Gambia to attack a French trading station. Tew bought an interest
in the sloop "Amity", a vessel of 70 tons, 8 guns, a crew of 45, from her owners
Gilbert, Hall, Stone, and others. Dew was given command
of the other sloop, the "Marigold". Bad weather forced Dew to
return, settling in Bermuda and marrying, and later to become a member of the Assembly. Tew
and his crew turned to privateering and changed course to the straits of Bab-el-Mandeb
where they attacked an Arab ship, yielding 30000 pounds per man. Tew returned
to Rhode Island with 100,000 pounds, telling his Bermudian partners that he had sprung his
mast and had sailed with the wind and unable to return to Bermuda. He delivered some
Spanish bullion and insisted that they sell him their shares in the "Amity".
With the booty, Gilbert purchased 100 acres in Devonshire. White
& Dickinson bought 75 acres (probably Verdmont) and Sam Stone
built Burch Castle in St George's (destroyed by fire abt 60 yrs ago). (reference: Bermuda

St Alban's Prize
Privy Council Meeting: Whitehall 2 Mar 1692/3. Upon petition of Captain
John Goddard, appointed Liuet. Gov of Bermudas, the "David" was ordered to carry
provisions to that island under the convoy of the "St Alban's Prize" which was
ordeed to go to Virginia but now has to stay and wait for the "David". (Virginia
Colonial Records Project, survey report 4795, Privy Council Register 1692-1694; PRO class
PC 2/75, pg 105; also SR 3179, PRO, CO 38/3, Bermuda Entry Books of Commissions,
Instructions etc, pg 86).
Sucess
Letter from J Goddard to Earl of Nottingham Bermuda 17 Nov 1693 sent by
way of the Sucess sloop bound from Virginia to England, which had put in at Bermuda in
distress. (Virginia Colonial Records Project, survey report 3168, Bermuda Original
Correspondence, Sec of State; PRO class CO 37/25, ff 140r-141v).
Marigold
See citation above. Protest registered by George Dew 30 December 1695. He
was Captain of the brigantine "Marigold", at anchor in St George's. En route
from Barbados to Africa, mutiny and storm damage forced his return. Arrival this date.

Aime
"Ordered that thirtyeight pounds currant money bee paid to Capt John Tucker
for the service and adventure of the sloop Aime on the expedition to Antego. Ordered that Charles
Minors, Dty Secretary do dispurse out of the powder money in his hands for the
fees of clearing out the said sloop the sum of one pound nine shillings and
fourpence." ( HM Council meeting minutes: 7 May 1697)
Blessing
Happy Jane
At HM Council 12 June 1697: "This board taking into consideration the
great trouble charge and expense occasioned by the going out of the sloope Blessing Capt
Leonard White Comander to and feaching in the sloope Happy Jane, Jonas
Clay, Master, who run away from these Islands without any entry or clearing or
leave of Government. Itt is ordered that Capt Leonard White do make and
being in the accompt of the Ware Tare Trouble Cost Charges Disbursements and Expenses
ccasioned by going out with the said sloope and as to the wages and reward the several
persons who went in her. And that the same accounts bee perused by Capt John
Tucker and Capt Daniell Johnson, and bee by the said Capt
John Tucker paid out of the publick monyes of these Islands. Ffurther ordered
that the said Capt John Tucker and Capt Daniell Johnson
do take into their consideration what the said Capt White and Mr
Thomas Durham owner of the said sloope Blessing ought to bee paid as their
perticular recompense and reward, And that it bee paid acordingly. On Mr Jonas
Clay and Mr John Tankards appearing about the
charge of running away in the sloope Happy Jane as above, ordered that a Court of
Admiralty bee holden at the Sessions House in St Georges on Thursday next by eight of the
clock in the morning."

The "Betty of Bermuda", plantation built 1697, 15 tons, Thomas Tristan
master; Wiliam Jooll, Thomas Lawson owners. Cleared SC 1703 (List of ships clearing
outwards in Lower District James River from April 23rd to Sept 25th).
Mary
The "Mary", a sloop named in the will (c1698) and estate (c1703) of Moses
Knapton (see his inventory).
