BAINES Charles Blacksmith 1827: Charles Baines, blacksmith. Born in Utterby, Lincolnshire about 1827. He is listed in the 1851 Census in Holton-le-Clay as a Blacksmith. His wife, Mary was the daughter of the Blacksmith William West and his wife Elizabeth. He was in Grainsby in 1861 as an Agricultural Labourer, but in 1871, 1881 and 1891 he was in Middlesborough, Yorkshire as Blacksmith and Grocer. Also listed in Blacksmiths of Lincolnshire Index. BELL William James Blacksmith 1852: William James Bell, blacksmith, labourer. Born about 1852-53 in Exeter, Devon, England. He moved to Middlesbrough Yorkshire sometime between 1871 and 1879. He married Elizabeth (?nee Rowe) in 1879 and his marriage certificate shows his occupation as Labourer. In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses he is shown as being a Blacksmith and this is the occupation shown on his death certificate in 1908. The certificate also shows the address of the business as 70 Clarendon Road, Middlesbrough. Contributor does not want to be contacted.

Children: William 18yrs (a grocer’s porter); Charlie 13yrs; Gertrude 12yrs; Maud 5yrs; Dorothy 1yr infant. CURTIS Peter James Blacksmith 1930: Peter James Curtis, master blacksmith. Born 12 April 1930. Died: 14 September 2008. Peter was apprenticed at "Taylors" then worked at "Kirkstall Forge, Leeds" then at "Armstrong Vickers" and finally at "e;York City Council" until 1990. He did many of York’s public iron works and rose to rank of General Foreman, eventually becoming Engineering Trades Supervisor for York. ELLIS William Blacksmith 1806: William Ellis, blacksmith, Yorkshire. Shown in the 1806 Militia List for the township of Cudworth in the Wapentake of Staincross as an apprentice Blacksmith. He was under 30 with no children therefore in the 'First Class' for Militia service, but was exempted because of his apprenticeship. Contact John by
FIELD William Blacksmith 1786: William Field, blacksmith. Born in 1786. Wife: Anness Forrrest, married at Thornhill parish church near Dewsbury, West Yorkshire in 1807. The Field family of Overton, then Meltham were blacksmiths for generations. His sons were James, Thomas, Stephen and John. William died a widower in his son Thomas's home at Millmoor, Meltham. HILL William Henry Blacksmith,Whitesmith,Fitter 1840: William Henry Hill, blacksmith, whitesmith, fitter. Born 25th December 1840 to Richard Hill and his wife Charlotte nee Golby. He is on the 1861 census at Greyfriars Lane, Coventry occupation a Smith. He moved to Doncaster and on 3rd November 1868 married Rose Fletcher (1847-1918) in the parish church, occupation Fitter. The family moved to Leamington Spa and on 1871 census are at Bath St, occupation Whitesmith. Children: Lilian (1869-1870) Richard William (1871-1960) and George Henry (1872-1957). William gives his occupation as Whitesmith on their Bc, bpt records. The family move to Salford and have a son, Walter(1876-1879). 1881: they are at Queens Place, occupation Blacksmith. In Slater's Directory 1886 and 1896 his occupation is Whitesmith. In 1901 the family are at Lower Islington St , occupation Blacksmith(wrought iron gates, etc.) Slater's 1903 and 1909 states he is a Whitesmith. In 1911 he is in Coventry visiting friends, occupation Whitesmith (out of employ) William died in 1920. He was my great, great grandfather. KENWORTHY(BECKIT) John Blacksmith 1822: John Kenworthy aka Beardshall and Beckit, iron worker, Yorkshire, England. Born in 1822, Bishops transcript from St Mary.s Church , Worsborough, Yorkshire, to a John Beckit and a Elizabeth Kenworthy. On the transcript he is with the name John Kenworthy and is illigetimate. John was bought up by a William Beardshall who was a Blacksmith in Wath-Upon-Dearne . His first marriage to Elizabeth Hincliffe in 1843, he calls himself John Beardshall, because he was bought up with a William Beardshall and Elizabeth who is a blacksmith in Wath-upon-Dearne. 1851: John and Elizabeth are in Elsecar, and he is a ironworker there. Then in 1858, he marries a second time to a widow, Sarah Hobson(nee Falding) from Wentworth. 1861 and 1871 census. On their marriage certificate he names himself John Kenworthy Beardshall/Beckett, names his father as Beckit a stonemason. So he has been quite a challenge to trace him I can tell you! I have a brickwall with the John Beckit his real father who is from Dodworth, and Elizabeth Kenworthy is from Worsborough, possibly Birdwell. I have not found out about them yet. RAW Norman Blacksmith 1949: Norman Raw,blacksmith who came from Hopperton was the last blacksmith at Whixley, Yorkshire, England., Established 1949 a business manufacturing agricultural machinery and even exported some of their implements. After Norman died a few years ago, his son Chris kept the business going for a while, sub-contracting out the workshop space for people to do welding jobs etc, but he has sold up and left now having obtained planning permission for two houses on the site. The modern workshop which replaced the original blacksmiths shop has been demolished and work is commencing on building the houses. See URL normanrow.co.uk. I have no other information.

SIMPSON John Blacksmith 1793: John Simpson, a blacksmith. Born in 1793, Cracoe,(Rylstone) Yorkshire. He came with his family to Kildwick between 1800 and 1810. His father, William was the blacksmith at Kildwick and he in turn took over his fathers business at The Smithy on the corner, opposite the White Lion Hotel. John married Elizabeth Whitaker in 1815, they had 13 children. John died in 1889, Bingley, Yorkshire, at the home of one of his daughters. Joseph married Margaret Overend in 1847. He is recorded as a blacksmith in 1841 census. Joseph and Margaret emmigrated to Australia and raised their family in Deniliquin, NSW, Australia. Joseph carried his blacksmith business there. They had 7 children. Joseph died in 1886, Deniliquin, NSW, Australia, and his wife Margaret also died in 1886, but in Melbourne, Vic, Australia. SIMPSON William Blacksmith 1763: William Simpson, blacksmith. Born circa 1763. Wife: Betty Gill, married in Giggleswick, North Yorkshire, England. They had 4 children born in Rylestone. Between 1800 and 1810 he moved with his family to Kildwick in Yorkshire. He took up the little blacksmith shop on the corner, opposite the White Lion Inn and worked their until he died aged 80, in 1843. It is possible William did his apprenticeship either in Kirkby Malham or Arncliffe, have not been able to find any details on that yet. His son took over the business after he died. Blacksmith Journeyman Thomas ?Limes 19yrs (unclear). In 1851 Robert is 45yrs, living in Emneth, Cambridgeshire with wife Mary 52yrs also a blacksmith (born Elm-Cambridgeshire). Children: James 21yrs; Elizabeth 13yrs; George 11yrs and Robert 10yrs. In 1861 Robert is 57yrs, a widower, living in Emneth, Cambridgeshire with daughter Mary Ann Swindle 25yrs and son George Swindle 21yrs (born 1840 blacksmith). Son Arthur Whittaker Jnr., born 1909, Sheffield. Early Census shows him as a boilermaker, came to Sheffield C. 1896. I have been told that he owned three blacksmith shops in Sheffield; West Don Forge, Edith St., and the weir at Hillfoot. Also ran a coal, fruit and potato business and had his own railway car stored at Bridgehouse station on the L.N.E.R line. owned property Harvest lane, Neepsend Lane, Birch st. and Edith St. Lived at #10 Favel Rd. in the 30's. Went to Saskatchewan, Canada on a Harvest Special on Aug. 9, 1923 and did blacksmith work on a large wheat farm till the end of the season. Died Feb. 26,1935. In 1844 he is named on the birth certificate as the father (David Scotland) to a child (born in Whitby, North Yorkshire) of Hannah Bryan - his occupation is Blacksmith. in 1846 he married Hannah Bryan in Whitby, North Yorkshire. His marriage certificate shows him as David Wilson Scotland, bachelor aged 27yrs, an Iron Moulder, living at Baxtergate, Whitby,Nth.Yorkshire. On the 1851 census he is listed as David Wilson aged 30,an Iron Moulder, in Lower Bent, Oldham (ref A0180) with wife Hannah 26yrs. Children: Mary 2yrs & Elizabeth 1 month infant. Elizabeth's birth certificate for 20/01/1851 also gives David's surname as Wilson and his occupation as Iron Moulder. Elizabeth was born in Wigan. Daughter Elizabeth Spaven Wood married Elisha Walker jet ornament merchant of Church Street Whitby, John is believed to have come to Whitby from Bridlington. WRIGHTSON William Blacksmith 1837: William Wrightson, blacksmith. Born 1837 Stokesley, North Yorkshire, father unknown, mother possibly Elizabeth Wrightson. He was brought up by blacksmith Thomas and Elizabeth Robinson and married their daughter Hannah in 1864 in Skelton. William & Hannah had a daughter Elizabeth Hannah in Oct 1864. Elizabeth died the following month and Hannah at the age of six months. William remarried and died in 1895 but is buried with his first wife and daughter in the old All Saints churchyard, Skelton. Bulmer's 1890 directory has William Wrightson as blacksmith living at 3 High St, Skelton. He also appears as a blacksmith in the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses.
