Street, New Town Batten, Wiltshirewith wife Elizabeth 37yrs. Children: Sarah 16yrs (dressmaker); William 12yrs (sweep); Mary 9yrs; Henery 7yrs; Elizabeth 4yrs; Eliza 10months infant. Also listed is Thomas Webb, 25yrs, unmarried (ag.labourer). Thomas is mentioned in the 1848 Directory for Bradford on Avon. I have no other information.

Also listed is Susan Ashdown 25yrs and Mary Ann Ashdown 20yrs. In 1851 Lewis is 17yrs, a whitesmith still living with grandparents William 66yrs and Susan 70yrs. Jump to 1891 and Lewis is 57yrs, blacksmith, living at 38 Alexandra Street, Folkestone, Kent; with wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Hopper) 49yrs (born Ewell Kent). The 1841 UK census lists William as 56yrs, a whitesmith; with wife Susan 60yrs (born Hastings, Kent). Living with them is daughters Susannah Ashdown 25yrs and Mary Ann Ashdown 20yrs and grandson Lewis Ashdown 8yrs. In 1851 William is 66yrs and Susan 70yrs still in Hythe. Grandson Lewis is 17yrs (whitesmith) is the only family members listed. IN 1961 William 76yrs still working as a blacksmith and wife Susan is 80yrs. AUGER William Whitesmith 1662: William Augur, whitesmith, brazier. William left a WILL in 1662. He is also mentioned in the V.C.H. of Leicestershire, England. Regarding his inventory: he had £93 invested in craft goods 'from copper to candlesticks', he was appraised at £207 or more. He had a workshop in Abbey Gate (i.e.outside the town walls-a fire risk trade) which he left to his wife, Elizabeth. One of his 2 daughters was married to George Loseby, brazier, of Dublin. As brass making was not established in England at this time, brazier at that date, I think, refers to ?bronze etc. Contact Carole by

John and Agnes had at least 3 children all born in Glasgow (Andrew Born 8 September 181;. Agnes born about 1826 ;Jane also born about 1826. John is my 3x great grandfather. BARFOOT William Whitesmith 1830: William Barfott, whitesmith, bellhanger, gas fitter. Born 1830-1831 in Pimlico, London, England. Parents: Harry Barfoot & Mary Ann (nee Avis). The 1851 census shows William living with his mother and brother in Kensington. 19-year-old William is shown as whitesmith journeyman. He is still shown as 'whitesmith journeyman' on the birth certificate of his son, William Joseph (born October 1858), but is a bell-hanger journeyman; by October 1860 at birth of son Harry John. Appears as bell hanger; on 1861 census. Shown as gas fitter; at death of daughter Etna, November 1865, but shown as blacksmith journeyman; at date of death of daughter Emma just three weeks later (December 1865)! Back to bell hanger; by date of second marriage, 28 Feb 1870, and also shown as bell hanger on 1871 census. I have not got a definite record on William's death, but the most likely is of a William who died in September 1910 and the death certificate shows him as 'formerly whitesmith of St. Margaret, Westminster'. In 1881 he was a metal worker/spoon forger, living at 34 Milk Street, Birmingham; with wife Eliza 27yrs. Children: Samuel 5yrs; Annie 3yrs; Albert 10mths infant and his mother Charlotte 59yrs,widow. A. 65yrs and son Alfred.G. Darren, 24yrs (coach builder). Joseph (Jnr) joined the 40th foot in 1840 as armourer sergeant. He was discharged 1862 and was gun maker in Essex (see 1871 census). In 1876 became an armourer in Chatham Kent for ten years and gave 32 years service as armourer to army. He later worked as a gunsmith, until his death 1899. Death cert shows he was a Master gunsmith, info given by a non-relative. If at Robert's death he was in business as a master gunsmith, surely this would mean he had to apprentice? The 1861 UK census of Helston, Cornwall he is described as an "Engineer in a Tin Mine". He married Catherine Hodge from Cork, Ireland at St. Austell in 1855 and on 17 February 1862 they along with their children John, Ann and Catherine sailed on the "Black Swan" from Plymouth, Devon for a new life in New Zealand. GOULD George Whitesmith 1826: George Gould, whitesmith,Brightsmith, blacksmith. Born 1826 in Bedminster, Bristol was a blacksmith in 1851 and a brightsmith in 1861. His father had been a solderer, part of the whitesmith trade. His brother William was also a whitesmith and eventually got a job with Brown Lennox in Pontypridd, Glam. His first assignment was to install gas in Lennox's house. In those days gas piping was quarter inch lead tubing, lead being another aspect of the whitesmith's trade. The family moved to Leamington Spa and on 1871 census are at Bath St, occupation Whitesmith. Children: Lilian (1869-1870) Richard William (1871-1960) and George Henry (1872-1957). William gives his occupation as Whitesmith on their Bc, bpt records. The family move to Salford and have a son, Walter(1876-1879). 1881: they are at Queens Place, occupation Blacksmith. In Slater's Directory 1886 and 1896 his occupation is Whitesmith. In 1901 the family are at Lower Islington St , occupation Blacksmith(wrought iron gates, etc.) Slater's 1903 and 1909 states he is a Whitesmith. In 1911 he is in Coventry visiting friends, occupation Whitesmith (out of employ) William died in 1920. He was my GG grandfather. In 1858 he married Charlotte Elizabeth Ward and had one son, Fredrick James Wix b. 1860. I have no record of what happened to Frederick James. Charlotte Elizabeth previously had a son out of wedlock (b.1849) whom she named Medwell William Wix Ward. It is believed that James was the father but there is no confirming record.
