BARKER Thomas Blacksmith 1802: Thomas Barker, born 18th July 1802 in Culmington, Shropshire, England. Wife: Celia nee Barklem, married 28th July 1839. During his lifetime he worked as a Blacksmith. Thomas died in Ludlow in 1887. Celia died in 1900. I have Thomas Barker's family tree going back to 1570 (before Cromwell). It is believed that he comes from a long line of blacksmiths. BLOCKLEY Edwin Blacksmith 1834: Edwain Blockley, born about 1834 in Sheriffhales, Shropshire. One of six children of Cornelius Blockley and Fanny (nee Parry) . Apprentice Blacksmith in 1851. Blacksmith on every other census. Lived in Sheriffhales all his life. Married Rhoda Parry (mother's niece) in 1863. Son Arthur born and died in 1864. Divorced in 1863. Died in 1913. BREEZE John Blacksmith 1811: John Breeze, blacksmith. Born 1811 in Asterley, Shropshire, England and died 1870, Asterley. John spent his whole life as a blacksmith in Asteley. John's father William (died 1832) and Grandfather (also named William died 1792 ) were also blacksmiths in the same part of Shropshire. John had four sons - Edward William (1854-1933), John (1844-1931), Richard 1851-1935) and Joseph (1861-1887). All four sons were practicing blacksmiths but Joseph emigrated to the USA in 1871. Edward William, John and Richard all subsequently moved to Staffordshire where they continued their trade or worked in related metal trades. Contact David by

The 1871 UK census lists Thomas as 35yrs, living in Arthur Street, Montgomery , Wales, with wife Elizabeth 38yrs (born Chirbury). Children: Thomas.M.S. 11yrs and John Allen 1yr infant. In 1881 Thomas is 45yrs, still Arthur Street, Montgomery. Elizabeth 47yrs. Children: John Allen 11yrs. Also listed are a boarder Walter Carver 10yrs (scholar); Thomas Jones, 23yrs, unmarried (blacksmiths assist) and Edward Lewis 18yrs, unmarried (blacksmiths apprentice). BUCKLEY Richard Blacksmith 1875: Richard Buckley, blacksmith. Born about 1875, Bicton, Shropshire, England. The 1891UK census lists Richard as 62yrs, living in Bicton with wife Sarah 57yrs (born Alberbury, Shropshire). Children: Richard 25yrs, single (blacksmith); Mary Ann 22yrs, single and William 16yrs (blacksmith). In 1911 Richard is 85yrs, widower, living with William and his family in Bicton.
BUCKLEY William Blacksmith 1875: William Buckley, blacksmith. Born about 1875, Bicton, Shropshire, England. The 1911 UK census lists William as 36yrs, living at Bicton, with wife Millicent (nee Cash). Children: Richard 8yrs; William 6yrs; Millicent 2yrs. CASH Sidney Blacksmith,Farrier 1895: Sidney Cash, blacksmith, farrier. Born 16 Feb 1895, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. The 1911 UK census lists Sidney as 17yrs, unmarried , blacksmiths assistant, living at the home of his sister Millicent (nee Cash) & brother-in-law William Buckley 33yrs (a blacksmith) and children. Also listed is blacksmith Richard Buckley, 85yrs, widower. Sidney cash served as a shoeing smith in WW1 (see the Indexes for Farriers; Blacksmiths of Shropshire; Warwickshire + Military. CHESHIRE John Blacksmith 1940: I understand my grandfather´s brother John Cheshire was a blacksmith in Bagley, Ellesmere, Schropshire, England. I have acopy of his orbituary but no date. CLAY Abraham Blacksmith-Journeyman 1868: Abraham Clay, blacksmith Journeyman. Born in 1868 and lived in Ashley, Morton Say, Market Drayton, Shropshire. I do not know where he did his Apprenticeship, sadly. He was married in 1888 to Martha Pitchford in Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire. He worked on the Trentham Gardens Estate in Trentham, Staffordshire as Blacksmith to the estate, and is listed in 1912 in the Newcastle Potteries and District Directory, (lists as an A. Clay, a Blacksmith in Ash Green, an area in Trentham which includes Longton Road,Staffordshire). Abraham died in 1939 in Longton, Staffordshire. DAVIES Samuel Blacksmith 1832: Samuel Davies, born about 1832 In Fitz Shropshire, by 1871 he was living in Boughton, Denbighshire (Wales) with his wife and two children, he died before 1901. Contact Rhiannon by.
DAYUS Joseph Blacksmith,Farrier 1794: Joseph Dayus, farrier, blacksmith. Born 1794, Chatwall Lawn, Cardington, Shropshire, England. Died: 1857. The son of Samuel and Margaret Dayus. He inherited the coppices of trees that his father had acquired called High Alders. He lived at Cardington. Married Eleanor Farmer in 1820 at Cardington. He worked as a blacksmith (1851 Census), although in 1854 on his second marriage to Eliza Baldwin he described himself as a Veterinary Surgeon. Death Certificate of 1857 states he was a farrier. . DAYUS Richard Blacksmith 1731: Richard Dayus, master blacksmith. Born 1731,Cardington, Shropshire, England. Died 1799. The eldest son of Samuel and Martha Dayus. Richard moved to Coalbrookdale where he established a blacksmiths business. Register of Duties paid for Apprentice's Indentures in 1775 show that he was a Master Blacksmith. (IR 1/59). 1777 Land Records show that Richard purchased further land at Coalbrookdale to build a new house and blacksmiths shop close to Dale Coppice. DOWNES Thomas Blacksmith 1841: Thomas DOWNES and his sons John and Benjamin were blacksmiths at Knowle near Burford in 1841. In 1851 John and Benjamin were still there. In 1861 Benjamin had moved to Nash and John to Bennett's End. In 1871, Benjamin and his son Thomas were back at Knowle and a younger son, also Benjamin was assistant blacksmith to Frederick William Ellt at Kyre Magna. In 1881, Benjamin Junior had taken over the family blacksmiths at Knowle. By 1891, Benjamin junior had left the trade to become an innkeeper. One of his brothers, Paul Briscoe, became a soldier and was my great grandfather. Confusingly, there was another Benjamin DOWNES, also a blacksmith at Nash, but I have not followed his tree. Acton Scott, now a working Victorian farm in Shropshire, was also the home of Downes families in the 19th century. Contact Elizabeth by

EVANS Edward Blacksmith 1800: Edward Evans, blacksmith. Born about 1800-1801 in Montgomery, Montgomeryshire, Wales. The 1841 UK census lists Edward as 41yrs, at the Brompton Smithy, Shropshire. Wife Ann is 31yrs (born about 1810 Montgomeryshire). Children: Ann 8yrs; John 6yrs; Edward 4yrs; Richard 2yrs; Mary 3mths infant. In 1851 Edward is 50yrs living in Brompton Church Stoke, Shropshire, England with wife Ann 40yrs. Children: John 16yrs; Edward 14yrs.; Elizabeth 8yrs; Lucy 6 months infant. 1861: Edward 60yrs;Ann 50yrs;John 26yrs, unmarried; Edward 24yrs,unmarried; Elizabeth 17yrs; Lucy 10yrs; Emma 7yrs; George 4yrs. In 1871: Edward is 70yrs, still at Brompton with Ann 60yrs. Children: John 36yrs, unmarried (blacksmith); Edward 34yrs, unmarried (blacksmith); Elizabeth 27yrs,unmarried; Lucy 20yrs, unmarried Emma 17yrs, unmarried and George 14yrs, scholar. EVANS John Blacksmith 1835: John Evans, blacksmith. Born about 1835, Church Stoke, Shropshire, England. The 1851 UK census lists John as 16yrs, living at Brompton, Church Stoke, Shropshire with his family. FORD Thomas Arthur Blacksmith Thomas Arthur Ford. Born: Fauls, Prees, Shropshire. Parents: John and Mar. Apprenticed to John Rogers, blacksmith, Fauls Green. Went to South Africa, married twice, three children by first wife, one, posthumously, by second. He went down on the Mendi, a Colour Sergeant,on 21 February, 1917 and is remembered with honour on the Hollybrook Memorial,Southampton. His medals are in the family of his second wife, claimed only recently from Pretoria. We have never been able to contact his English family, and would so like to do so. Contact Ivy by.

FURMSTON David (Snr) Blacksmith 1820: David Furmaston, blacksmith. Baptised 18.4.1820, Cockshutt, Shropshire, England. Orphaned at approx 10yrs of age. Died March 1891. Father: Samuel Furmston (Baker). Mother: Mary Griffiths (daughter of David Griffiths Blacksmith of Ruyton of the Eleven Towns). Married Sarah Sockett Loppington Parish Church on 3.5.1844. GRIFFITHS David Blacksmith 1841: David Griffiths aged 70yrs, blacksmith, was born Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire, England. Daughter Mary married Samuel Furmston a Baker on the 11.1.1819 at Ruyton. Both Samuel Furmston and Mary nee Griffiths died very young leaving a small family. JONES Thomas Blacksmith 1858: Thomas Jones, blacksmith assistant. Born about 1858, Chirbury, Montgomery, Shropshire(close to Wales), England. The 1881 UK census lists Thomas as 23yrs, unmarried, lodging with and working for master blacksmith Thomas Bridgewater, in Arthur Street, Montgomery.
LEWIS Edward Blacksmith 1863: Edward Lewis, blacksmith. Born about 1863, Montgomery, Shropshire(close to Wales), England . The 1881 UK census lists Edward as 18yrs, unmarried, apprentice to master blacksmiths Thomas Bridgewater at Arthur Street, Montgomery.
MIDDLETON Benjamin Blacksmith 1808: Benjamin Middleton, blacksmith. Born 1808 in Hodnet , Shropshire, England. In 1833 Ben stole 3 ducks, tea caddy and other goods from a deceased persons property, sentenced to 7 years transportation, to NSW Australia, 1836. Arrived after being in a hulk the Justitia for 2 years, worked for the Government as a blacksmith, received his Ticket of Leave and Certificate of Freedom, 1846 returned to Yorkshire, set up a Blacksmith Business, 1856 Immigrated back to NSW Australia, worked as a blacksmith in Pyrmont NSW until he died.1872. PIDGEON Thomas Blacksmith 1675: Thomas Pidgeon, blacksmith. Birth date unknown but possibly late 1600's in Shropshire, England. Thomas married Ann ?surname (marriage date not proved). Children baptized at Albrighton by Shrewsbury are: Martha baptism baptism as 02 January 1699; Elizabeth bp 03 May 1702. Martha Pidgeon married Benjamin Bather 30 Jun 1729 Saint Alkmund Shrewsbury (Note* Benjamin Bather had 2 wives, waiting for information). On FindMyPast.com there are the following burial entries at Albrighton by Shrewsbury which are: Elizabeth Pidgeon 1724; Anne Pidgeon 1728; Thomas Pidgeon 1728 (Prerogative Court of Canterbury Will dated 18 September 1729 of Albrighton). RIDGLEY Richard Blacksmith 1781: Richard Ridgley, blacksmith. Born about 1781, England. Christened on 6 October 1782 in Bitterley, Shropshire, England. Richards Castle is on the border of Herfordshire and Shropshire. Son of Richard Ridgley and Martha Gwilt, Richard married Ann Hards on 18 April 1812 in Richards Castle.  Richard died 1825, was buried on 17 September 1825 in Richards Castle, Herefordshire. ROGERS John (Snr) Blacksmith 1840: John Rogers (Snr) blacksmith. Born about 1840, Prees, Shropshire, England. Son of master blacksmith William (born 1811 and Mary Rogers). The 1861 UK census lists John as 21yrs, working with his father at Sandford. John married Jane Keen from Oxfordshire in 1870, and seems to have continued the blacksmith business until his death in 1898. They had four sons. (1) John Rogers born in 1875 (blacksmith) (2)George Rogers born in 1879 (blacksmith) (3) Herbert Rogers born in 1883 (a master plumber).(4) Frederick Rogers born 1883 (in 1901 he is an apprentice blacksmith, and in 1911 is a cycle agent in nearby Whitchurch). Family tales say he was involved in the development of the steam car. After John Rogers died in 1898, the business seems to have been continued by his sons and widow until at least 1901. Jane then moved to the Manchester area with some of her daughters where she remarried. I can find no further trace of the blacksmiths after 1901. The smithy became a private house. Contact Frances by

The 1861 UK census lists William as 18yrs, apprentice to his father in Sandford. In 1881 he is a blacksmith living at the Lamb Inn, Ightfield, and in 1891 is at Corre Rd Whitworth, along with William Sutton, a blacksmith. Contact Frances by
ROGERS William (Snr) Blacksmith 1811: William Rogers Snr), master blacksmith. Born 1811, in Madeley, Shropshire, England. Baptised aged 1yr, 20th September 1812 in Prees, Sandford. In 1836 William married local girl Mary Davis. The 1841 UK census lists William as 30yrs, living in Press with Mary 30yrs. Children: Eliza 3yrs; John 1yr (born 1839). Also listed is Richard Rogers 20yrs (blacksmith apprentice). William is still living there as a blacksmith in 1851, 61, 71 and 81, though then he is a widower. William died in 1896. Names of children added over the years are William (born 1842); Anne (born 1845); Fanny (born 1847. An apprentice blacksmith William Davies 17yrs (born Salop, Prees) was with William in 1851. SMITH John Blacksmith 1811: John Smith, blacksmith. Born 1811 in Asterley, Shropshire, England. Son of blacksmithWilliam Smith who plied his trade in the same area. John married Martha Griffiths in 1835 and they had five sons, Richard, Edward William , Samuel , Joseph and John. All the sons also worked as blacksmith's in the Asterley area. Records show that Edward William , Richard and John later moved from Shropshire and worked as a Blacksmith in Staffordshire. Contributor does not wish to be contacted.
SUTTON George Blacksmith 1901: George Sutton, blacksmith. Born: 22nd April 1902, at The Smithy, Burlton, Shropshire, England. Died: 1970s, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. No issue. George was the last smithy at Burlton. The Smithy at Burlton in George Sutton's time was used as the model for the Shropshire Women’s Institute’s commemorative plates celebrating rural activities. The 1841 UK census lists William as 45yrs, living in Loppington with wife Martha 40yrs. Children: Ann 17yrs; Betsy 15yrs; Martha 11yrs and sons Francis 6yrs and William 4yrs. In 1851 William si56yrs, still at Loppington. Martha 53yrs. Children: Ann 26yrs, unmarried; William 15yrs(scholar) and Emma 9yrs. The 1861 census lists William as 66yrd, Martha 63yrs and son William 23yrs (butcher). 1871 William is 76yrs, retired blacksmith, but still an innkeeper. Martha is 72yrs plus daugther Emma 29yrs, unmarried (school mistress) and grandson Thomas Elkes 5yrs. William no seen on census after this date. Contact Brian by
