Andrew Gibson is the grandson of the well known John Gibson of Kaituna who was one of the first settlers in Nelson, New Zealand arriving on the Fifeshire 1 Feb 1842. Andrew Gibson married Annie McIsaac in Blenheim, 21 Jul 1889. Andrew was a Blacksmith by trade with own business until he moved from the area and had his brother William take over the business. The family continued to live at Ureni, Taranaki, and Andrew as Blacksmith. His wife died in 1947, and his last years living at 237 Avenue Road, New Plymouth where he continued to live until the age of 92 when he died at Urenui, Taranaki, New Zealand. | GLASSON | Paul Roach | Blacksmith | 1878: Paul Roach Glasson, blacksmith. Paul emigrated to New Zealand in 1878 and settled south of Christchurch at a place called Temuka. Paul married Emily Hyde Crompton in February 1883 at Temuka and by the time he went out for a walk on the 21st December 1887 he had fathered three children; William, James and Mary Jane. When Paul set off for his walk he took his trusty old shotgun and his two young boys with him. When he stopped along the road to talk to a neighbour by the name of Mr Woodley, the boys got impatient and started playing around his feet. It was at that time that one of the boys touched the gun which went off and took away half of the unfortunate Paul's face resulting in his death some two or so hours later. Using the insurance money of 150 pounds widow Emily and the three children returned to Cornwall, however Emily returned to New Zealand in 1890 with two of her children, minus James. Emily remarried to a certain Mr Lewis and lived in North Canterbury, at a small place called Eyreton. Contact contributor for website URL. Census records have Bill's occupation in 1905 as Blacksmith in Greymouth. He then moved to Waimate North (perhaps for gum trade) where he worked as a Blacksmith from 1911. Married Hilda Finey in 1913 and served in the Army Reserve, 2nd Division as Master Blacksmith, in Ohaewai. | SMITH | George William | Blacksmith | 1847: George William Smith, born 1847 in Bryansford, Co. Down, Ireland. George was 2yrs old when he came to New Zealand in 1849 on the "Oriental Queen"Parents: William (was a 'Fencible') & Sarah. The family settled at Onehunga NZ. George William Smith served his apprenticeship as a Blacksmith with James McIntyre, engineer and blacksmith of Onehunga. He was a Blacksmith in the Waikato region of New Zealand, probably between 1872 and 1887 and ran his own business in Morrinsville and had branches in Waitoa and Richmond. He was in Dargaville for a short period after that, before returning to the family seat in Auckland. George married Ellen Mary Redwood who was born on board the ship 'Egmont' on the way to New Zealand in 1855. Her father John was commissioned to supervise the building of the Onehunga Blockhouse in 1860. George died on September 9th 1928 aged 81yrs. Contact Isabella by. |

Arrived NZ as an 'Albertland' settler with wife Jane on 'Gertrude' in January 1863. Worked at Waimate North for Bedggood family and then at Te Kopuru and other places on the Northern Wairoa before taking up land at Paparoa and running a smithy there from the 1870s. | STEEL | Joseph Robinson | Blacksmith | 1832: Joseph Robinson Smith, born in Addingham, Yorkshire, in 1832, was married in 1857 and shortly afterwards emigrated to Victoria Australia, going to goldfields there, his wife following the following year. In 1863 the family moved from Victoria to Christchurch, New Zealand, where Joseph set up his business as a blacksmith, trading as the Victorian Shoeing Forge. He had, in the old coaching days, a contract with Cable & Co to keep their horses shod. About 1872 Joseph moved to Winslow, near Ashburton, and did a short spell of farming before again setting himself up as a blacksmith under the name of Victorian Carriage Works. Before leaving England Joseph had done a short course in dentistry, and in Ashburton he used to put his dentistry skills into practice, dusting off the forge and seating the patient thereon, then pulling out the offending tooth with his pliers. In 1897 Joseph's two sons took over the business. Joseph died in 1919 in Ashburton, New Zealand. Contact Jan by |

| TELFAR | Alexander | Blacksmith | 1836: Alexander Telfar, blacksmith. Born on 23 Mar 1836 at Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Parents: James Telfar [a blacksmith] and Mary nee McLean. He emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860s, and after spending time in Otago went to Taranaki during the New Zealand Land Wars with the Otago Contingent about 1865. He was stationed at Urenui with Captain Goode's forces and was later awarded a Crown Grant of 50 acres of land there. Alex established a smithy at Urenui on his land, the size of which doubled when he purchased another 50-acre block. Alex married Mary Johnson at New Plymouth, Taranaki, in 1870 and the couple raised a family of 3 sons. A little before Williams birth his Aunt Georgina Gilbert married John Burgess in 1858 at Kaiapoi and by 1860 they were living and working in The Mackenzie eventually running the Burke Pass Hotel and the Post Office. William married Emily Boston (aka Amelia Elizabeth Boston born 7th February 1867) the maid from the Burke Pass Hotel at Fairlie Creek in 1888?. | VOIGHT | Johannes Carl | Blacksmith & Wheelwright | 1880: Johannes Carl Voigt, blacksmith & wheelwright. He went by the name of John Charles Voight as it sounded less German. Born in 1880 in Queensland, Australia. Died in 1964 in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand with his family after his mother died in1885? When first in NZ he worked for Turnbulls as a wheelwright at Waikiwi and Invercargill. In 1901 John went of to the Boer War along with another man named Watts (who later, in 1905, married John’s sister Ruth Voight). In 1907 John had a blacksmith business in Waipahi which he kept until 1913; then the family moved to Pleasant Point, near Timaru. His main business here was on the main street near the town hall. The only other Smithy in the area was in Totara Valley and this was managed by a Mr. Anderws. In 1919 John bought a farm of 400 acres not far from Albury. He sold the farm in the 1950s and retired to Geraldine. He was one of those men who was already ready to help others out; he was also a great Church man. In WW1 he was the local recruiting officer.
