BATCHELOR Thomas James Blacksmith & Wheelwright 1868: Thomas James Batchelor, blacksmith & wheelwright in Manchester, England. Born 1868 in Lee Common, Bucks. His family moved to Gorton, Manchester, in 1874. Thomas was apprenticed and eventually started his own business. He later worked for Greaves and Faulkner at the railway in Gorton until retirement in 1944. Listed in both the Blacksmiths of Lancashire & the Wheelwrights Index. BENNETT William Blacksmith 1801: William Bennett, blacksmith. Born in 1801 at Catterall (near Garstang), Lancashire, England. William married twice. (1) in 1825 to Ann Dobson who died in 1828. D uring this period he was a blacksmith living in Elswick (near Gt Eccleston). He married (2) Mary Snape in 1831. c1832 they moved to Whittingham (near Goosnargh). He is recorded as blacksmith in that village on the census records for 1841 to 1861. In 1851 he is shown as employing 1 man, (it is possible that this could be George his son from the first marriage) also employing an apprentice blacksmith. By 1871 he had retired and was a farmer with 4 acres. William died in September 1880. Contact John by.

BROADLEY James Blacksmith 1723: James Broadley , blacksmith. Baptised at Church Kirk 20th March 1723/24 as the illegitimate son of Ellen Broadley and John Birtwill/Birtwistle who had married Ellen's sister Jennet on 2 Sep 1723. James's children's baptisms at Haslingden name him as blacksmith of Baxenden or Accrington. His grandfather, John Broadley made a will 23rd October 1733 leaving "James Broadley alias Birtwistle son of Ellin Dugdale my daughter the sum of three pounds and one cupboard". Contact Marie by.

CUNILIFFE John Blacksmith 1761: John Cunliffe, a blacksmith. Born in circa 1761. He married Sarah Ormerod on 6 January 1794 in Newchurch St. Nicholas, Chapelry of Haslingden. John died aged 78yrs in January 1840 and was buried 27 January 1840 in Newchurch in Rossendale, Lancashire. Aged 78. Sarah Ormerod was born circa 1769 in Rawtenstall. She was an Innkeeper. The 1881 UK census for Salford, Lancashire, lists Michael as 34yrs. Living at 15 Cable Street, Salford with wife Ann Crosby (was married to Crosby) she was born in Mallow, Cork. Michael (Snr) and Ann they had the two children before they were married in 1876. Their son Michael Donohoe (Jnr) 11yrs ( born about 1869), in Co. DOWNS Isaac Blacksmith, Wheelwright 1816: Isaac Downs, master blacksmith,wheelwright. Isaac was a farmer's son was born 13th October 1816. Wife Elizabeth Hopwood, married 1842. He was a Master Blacksmith living and working at Manchester Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport (this being Lancashire in the first half of the century and Cheshire in the latter half). Two of Isaac's sons became blacksmiths, and one became a wheelwright. Isaac died in 1872, but his wife and sons were still running the business in 1891. I understand there was such gentleman responsible for work at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire and Castle Howard, Yorkshire in the late 1600's, and yet I've not been able to find any details. GARLICK Robert Blacksmith,Coachsmith 1826: Robert Garlick, master blacksmith, coachsmith. Born about 1815, Lancashire, England. The 1841 UK census lists Robert as 15yrs, an apprentice blacksmith to master blacksmith Francis Allison of Garstang. In 1851 Robert is ?23yrs, a blacksmith master in Poulton le Fylde employing one man. He is living with his widowed mother Mary 51yrs and brother Joseph 19yrs. By 1971 he had moved to Everton, Liverpool to be near his brothers and is noted as a Coach Smith (see Cartwrights Index). Contact Simon by

James Listed as Blacksmith on 1837 marriage Certificate 1837 Living at Rupell St Married Mary Preston Living in Lime St Liverpool. Father John Preston Listed as Coachman 1851 census still a Blacksmith but sometime between 1851 and 1861 moved to Aston Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK. The 1861 census lists John as 43yrs; Mary 43yrs. Sons John 22yrs(blacksmith); James 19yrs(blacksmith) and Thomas ?3 yrs (or /13yrs). They were living at Court A 2 House 3 Aston. John continued his trade until he died 1880 aged 63yrs. In 1871 George was an assistant blacksmith to William Smith in Broughton. 1881: George is 35yrs, living at 1 Adelphi Place, Preston, Lancashire with wife Lydia 43yrs (born Lancaster). HARDMAN Richard (Jnr) Blacksmith 1817: Richard Hardman (Jnr), master blacksmith, employs 1 apprentice. Born 1817, Broughton, Lancashire, England. Richard (Jnr) married Eliza Winders in 1842, in St Leonard’s Walton le Dale. In 1851 Richard and Eliza are living in Tardy Gate. Children: Sarah, George, Nathan and Grace. Apprentice: Thomas Johnson (born 1833). By 1861 the family, with the addition of children David born 1852 and Dinah, born 1856, was in New Hall Lane Samlesbury, having moved there sometime between the births of these two children. Son George (aged 15) was now an apprentice blacksmith. In 1871 George was an assistant blacksmith to William Smith in Broughton. See Blacksmiths of Lancashire for Richard’s parent’s blacksmith Richard Hardman (Snr) and Dorothy (nee Newsham) who were married in Broughton on 30 Nov 1808. The 1861 UK census lists Edward as 2yrs, living at Farnsworth with parents Benjamin 34yrs and Ellen 28yrs. In 1871 Edward is 12yrs, 11 Anvil Street, Bolton with his family (see FindMyPast). 1881: Edward is 23yrs still at 11 Anvill Street with his family. 1891: Census, aged 33yrs, living at 9 Woodhouse Lane, Wigan and married to Angelina Holland, children Benjamin, Frederick, James Edward and Annie. 1901 census lists Edward as aged 42yrs, Blacksmith at Loco Shed, residing at 4 Stratford Street with wife and family. 1911: Edward aged 52, living at 145 Woodhouse Lane, Wigan, Blacksmith for Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. (Possibly working at Douglas Bank Sidings which was close to his home on Woodhouse Lane - see Alan Godfrey Ordnance Survey Map Wigan West 1907). The 1841 UK census lists Jonathan as 37yrs, residing at 37 Mangnall Fold, Worsley with wife Alice Ridings and children Benjamin (13) Jonathan (10) Lucy (7) James (5) and Richard (3 weeks). In 1851 the family is residing at 94 Dunkirk, Little Hulton. Eldest son Benjamin now 22yrs and also a Blacksmith and Frances, his wife also 22yrs. Died 1868 aged 64, Little Hulton, Bolton. HILL William Henry Blacksmith,Whitesmith,Fitter 1840: William Henry Hill, blacksmith, whitesmith, fitter. Born 25th December 1840 to Richard Hill and his wife Charlotte nee Golby. He is on the 1861 census at Greyfriars Lane, Coventry occupation a Smith. He moved to Doncaster and on 3rd November 1868 married Rose Fletcher (1847-1918) in the parish church, occupation Fitter. The family moved to Leamington Spa and on 1871 census are at Bath St, occupation Whitesmith. Children: Lilian (1869-1870) Richard William (1871-1960) and George Henry (1872-1957). William gives his occupation as Whitesmith on their Bc, bpt records. The family move to Salford and have a son, Walter(1876-1879). 1881: they are at Queens Place, occupation Blacksmith. In Slater's Directory 1886 and 1896 his occupation is Whitesmith. In 1901 the family are at Lower Islington St , occupation Blacksmith(wrought iron gates, etc.) Slater's 1903 and 1909 states he is a Whitesmith. In 1911 he is in Coventry visiting friends, occupation Whitesmith (out of employ) William died in 1920. He was my great, great grandfather. Children: George 30yrs (born 1805-1810 blacksmith), Robert 25yrs and Joseph 12yrs. Also listed is Ann Guy 20yrs. George (senior) died on the 19th May 1849 and was buried on 22 May 1849 at Sefton. He married Elizabeth Carter in Preston in 1829 and they had at least 11 children of which 5 were boys (although one died as an infant). Richard was listed as a blacksmith in Preston in the 1841 census, working on the High St I believe. In 1851, he was still operating as a blacksmith on the High St, and in 1861 the family had moved to Gt. Hanover St, where he was still a blacksmith, aged 56.  He died around 1878. Contact Mike by
PARKER Thomas Blacksmith 1764: Thomas Parker, blacksmith. Thomas was born circa 1764 in Lytham. Married Rosamond Ashcroft in Preston in 1793. They had 10 children, of which 6 were boys, from 1793 through 1815. they moved from Preston to Warton around 1800 and then to Kirkham around 1805. Thomas was first noted as a blacksmith in Kirkham in 1811 (Holden's Trade Directory 1811). In 1841, he was still a blacksmith, aged 77 (noted as "75" on the 1841 census), and in fact he was also still listed as a blacksmith in 1851, aged 87, when living with his youngest daughter Ann and her family.  Thomas died in 1854 at her house in Liverpool and was buried at St. Michael’s Church in Kirkham. Of Thomas’ children, John, James. Richard and George all became blacksmiths, and Michael and Thomas became shoemakers. Contact Mike by

The 1861 UK census lists him as 65yrs, living at 151 Houghton Street Prescot where he operated his business from; with wife Isabella 53yrs (born Prescot). Children: John 27yrs, unmarried (tool maker, watch maker); George 19yrs, unmarried (blacksmith); Isabella 17yrs; Joseph 8yrs. His son John Pinnington and son-in-law John Rimmer were also employed as watchmakers (See Clock & Watchmakers Index) . His sons Richard Pocock and Obadiah Pocock continued as Blacksmiths in Hawridge, Bucks and in Berkhampstead, Herts respectively. A photo of Pocock's shoeing Forge in Berkhampstead appears on the cover of Old Victorian and Edwardian photographs by Richard Whitmore. Kellys Trade directory for 1899 shows the business carried on by Charles and Frank Pocock 15 High Street, Berkhampstead. His marriage certificate shows him as David Wilson Scotland, bachelor aged 27yrs, an Iron Moulder, living at Baxtergate, Whitby,Nth.Yorkshire. On the 1851 census he is listed as David Wilson aged 30,an Iron Moulder, in Lower Bent, Oldham (ref A0180) with wife Hannah 26yrs. Children: Mary 2yrs & Elizabeth 1 month infant. Elizabeth's birth certificate for 20/01/1851 also gives David's surname as Wilson and his occupation as IRON MOULDER Elizabeth was born in Wigan.
