He immigrated to Boston before 1865 and worked as a blacksmith from 1865 to 1904. On 19 May 1872, he married Margaret Neville of St. John's. They had six children (four of whom died of tuberculosis in childhood). Gregory's son John Patrick Breen born 1873 died 1970 was a postal worker who was diagnosed with TB, but "cured" by vacation to farm in Newfoundland. Mary Frances born 1876 died1910 of tuberculosis at the Rutland Sanitarium. Annies born 1879 and died 1890 of tuberculosis. Thomas born 1880 worked as a clerk until he died at age 20 of tuberculosis. Joseph Frederick was born 1884 and died at age 6 of tuberculosis. Agnes was born 1886 and worked as a telephone operator at the sanitarium where her sister Mary was being treated. We visited on holidays as we lived in England. He was my grandfather his forge was at the bottom of Ram Street also known as Skeffington St. Wexford, Eire. Henry/Harry and his brother John emigrated to Philadelphia in the 1860/1870's. His sister Mary, Catherine, Ann and Susan also emigrated to the USA. Mary married Hugh Flynn and lived out her days in Philadelphia and Harrison County Iowa. Ann married Michael Haley and lived out her days in Harrison County, Catherine married Patrick Cartin and lived out her days in Philadelphia and Susan married Del Servoss and lived out her days in Vail Iowa and Nebraska. John, his brother ran a Blacksmith shop in Philadelphia. John died in 1875 with smallpox leaving a wife and daughter. Henry /Harry returned to Ireland in 1879. He married Catherine Kerlin of Carnanreagh Cumber Claudy and was a farmer and Blacksmith in Stranagalwilly, Learmount, Upper Cumber, Co Londonderry. NI until his death in May 1914. The McDaid/McDevitt Blacksmith Shop in Stranagalwilly was an important support system to the economy of the area. | | St JOHN | Michael | Blacksmith | 1819: Michael St John (Sinjohn), blacksmith. My 4th great grandfather Michael St-John, (born in Ireland, died 1859 St Romauld, Quebec) and wife Mary Power were living in Quebec City, Canada by 09 Oct 1819 for the birth of son Thomas. The family was in Frampton Township, Quebec by Feb 1822 for the baptism of son John., before moving back to Quebec City by 1851 and then to St-Romauld, Quebec. His occupation as blacksmith was recorded on his death registration. Sons Thomas and James were also recorded on censuses and bmd registrations as blacksmiths. There is a possibility that Michael first settled in Newfoundland after leaving Ireland. His daughter Ellen/Helen recorded on the 1851 and 1891 censuses that she was born in Newfoundland. It is worth noting that nearly all Irish immigrants to Newfoundland in that time were from within 40 miles of Waterford City, Co. Waterford, Ireland. I have indeed found a baptismal registration for a Michael St John, baptized 8 Jan 1773, St-Patrick’s, Waterford City, son of James St John and Catherine Hearn. While I cannot yet prove this is my Michael’s bapt registration, it does seem to fit: (1) location; (2) timing, (3) names of Michael’s sons are the same as the names of Michael’s father and brothers (Irish Naming Tradition). Michael St John and Mary Power had the following children: (1) James, ca 1815-1874, m Margaret Powell, (2) Ellen/Helen, ca 1819-1891, m Nicholas Fortune; (3) Thomas, 1819-1876, m Mary Crosby; (4) John, 1822-1907, m Sarah Jane Whitty; (5) Margaret, 1824-1913 m Alexander Balfour/Belford; (6) Bridget, 1829-1903, m George Hennessey; (7) Michael, 1833-1839; (8) Mary, 1833-aft 1900, m James Smith.
