The 1851 UK census lists John as 21yrs, unmarried, living in Gosford, Ottery St Mary Honiton, Devon. Lodging with Thomas & Grace Harding (carpenters). The 1851 UK census lists John as 27yrs, living at Western Street, Buckgorn Weston Dorset, England with wife Ruth nee Taylor , married 1845 (born Chiselborough). ANNING James Blacksmith 1769: James Anning, blacksmith. Married Ann Hinde 29 August 1769. They were both born in Burton Bradstock, Dorset, and had three children, Mary (1774), Ann (1777) and James (1778). James Anning's parents were James Anning and Edith Keech, both of Burton Bradstock. BARTER Samuel Blacksmith 1858: Samuel Barter, blacksmith. Born Feb 1858, Sandhills, Holwell, Dorset, England. Samuel married Emily Matthews from Long Sutton in1884. They had 7 children. William John born 1884 (confectioner); Ernest George born 1886(Blacksmith); Albert Edward born1889 (blacksmith) died aged 22; Walter Wilfred born 1891; Mabel Blanche born 1893; Ivy Theresa M born 1900; Lionel Herbert born 1904. BILES William (2) Blacksmith,Military 1800's: William Biles (2), blacksmith. Baptised at Nettlecombe, Powerstock, Dorset. Died 25th January 1920 age 89yrs and buried in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Before enlistment as a Gunner in the Royal Marines 30 January 1854 at Portsmouth, it is stated on his Naval Records that he was a blacksmith. See also the Military Blacksmiths Index. BROWN James Blacksmith
BROWN Solomon Blacksmith,Farrier 1818: Solomon Brown, blacksmith, farrier. Born 1818 in Beaminster Dorset, he enlisted in the Army (10th Hussars) at Dorchester as a blacksmith on the 24th December 1839 and he achieved the rank of Farrier Major, serving in the East Indies and The Crimea, and was in service for a total of 24 years 55 days. Wife: Elizabeth Mary (nee Young) also born in Wimborne in 1864, the daughter of George & Elizabeth Young. Henry is recorded as a Blacksmith in the 1891 & 1901 censuses and he & Elizabeth were living at 35 Lower Bannister Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England. John Coffin was my great-great grandfather; he was a blacksmith in Holwell (which was part of Somerset until 1844 when it was switched to Dorset). John died 1882. The 1841 UK census lists him as 25yrs, lodging with blacksmith Christopher Type and family at Charmont Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset. In1851 John Denslow (Snr) was a Mechanic at Flax Mills, Greenham, Crewkerne; wife Mary (nee Type) 33yrs. Children: Catherine 8yrs; Elizabeth 7yrs; John 2yrs. Lodger: John Stanton 29yrs, widower (mill foreman). 1861: John 49yrs, a widower, and is now a blacksmith, at Membury, Devon living with his daughter Elizabeth Caddy nee Type, 17yrs (flax reeler); sons John (Jnr) 12yrs and William 6yrs. The 1861 UK census lists James as 32yrs, living in Bramshaw Wiltshire, Hampshire, England with wife Elizabeth 29yrs (born Broughton, Hampshire) and sons Edwin 6yrs and George 4yrs (both born Broughton). James worked at Bramshaw in the New Forrest, Hampshire, in 1861. The 1781 census lists James as 43yrs and Elizabeth 38yrs, living in Ower, Eling, Hampshire. EDON (HAYDON) Frederick Blacksmith & Wheelwright 1858: Frederick Edon or Haydon, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON, "visitor" aged 3yrs in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. See also, Wheelwrights Index.

WHITTLE John Cady Blacksmith 1841: John Cady Whittle, blacksmith. Born 1841 Portland Dorset. He worked on the railway as a blacksmith in NSW and QLD. He also worked at Redbank Plains, Queensland for Cribbe and Foote, Ipswich as a blacksmith and in about 1876 settled at Gatton Queensland as a blacksmith. He started one of the first businesses in Gatton. The Whittle family have been in business ever since as blacksmiths, saddlers and hardware merchants (Reference: Book -History of Gatton Shire in Lockyer Valley 1979).
