Born 1818 in Beaminster Dorset, he enlisted in the Army (10th Hussars) at Dorchester as a blacksmith on the 24th December 1839 and he achieved the rank of Farrier Major, serving in the East Indies and The Crimea, and was in service for a total of 24 years 55 days. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON, "visitor" aged 3yrs in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. See also, Wheelwrights Index.
