TREMLETT Robert Blacksmith 1773: Robert Tremlett, blacksmith. Born about 1773 in Devon, England. Although born in Devon I do not know where, or when he died. Robert’s son, also Robert, was born here in Silverton in c1832, was still alive and working here in Silverton in 1901. His son Sydney was born here in 1861, and he was later also landlord of the Three Tuns Inn, where he also ran his blacksmith’s business while his father continued his trade in Tiverton Road. Sydney’s son Archie, the last Silverton blacksmith, although born at The Three Tuns, worked from his grandfather’s blacksmith’s in Tiverton Road, Silverton. I suspect that the other Tremlett’s that have been included on the website are related, as it is a fairly common name in the area. One point, I am not related to this family, although I do remember Archie who was still alive when I came to the village 35 years ago. My interest is purely with the history of Silverton. From Ralph Tooley's book, Laugh Along With Longboat, comes this story about an evening of entertainment at the school house (Mt. Carswell School) where Alf is mentioned... this story was entitled, The Mighty Smith. "In our neighbourhood we had our "mighty smith" who came to us from the British army and all his days with us he walked like a soldier - straight as a rod. Alf Wiborn was not only a good blacksmith but he was an excellent entertainer. One night at a concert in the Old Mount Carswell hall, Alf performed and entertained with several songs but the comic son, "I'm Jolly old farmer McGee" brought the house down. Fred Nicholls, the father of Roy of Courtice, laughed until the tears rolled merrily down his face. To many of us in attendance that night, we not only enjoyed smithy's songs and antics but got a great kick out of watching Harry Gay Sr. Mr. Gay had a goatee and somehow this goatee was able to keep in unison with Nicholl's laughter. I am sure that one more verse from Alf would have meant the death of both Fred and the end of Harry\'s goatee, so vigourously was it bobbing up and down. In addition to his many other talents, Alf had a streak for inventing and one of his inventions was a wonder pipe wrench. Alf was buried at Ebenezer many years ago." Alfred Wyborn died September 27 1901, buried Ebenezer Bible Christian, North Section, Durham, Darlington, Ontario, Canada. Contact Fenella by.
