WILLEY William Cutler 1789: William Willey, Cutler. Born 1789 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Died London 1857. He was apprenticed to Charles Roebuck, but didn't gain his freedom until 1831, when he was awarded the trademark "RAILWAY" to use on his production of spring knives, penknives, razors, and table knives. At some point in the late 1830s he set up a partnership William Willey & Sons with two of his sons Henry and Charles. Trade directories list him at 86 South St (1829), 19 Button Lane (1834) and 47 Chester St (1842). From the London Gazette (#20376), the partnership William Willey & Sons, Sheffield & Liverpool, was dissolved 10 August 1844. Henry was then living and working in Liverpool, Charles continued in Sheffield, and William went to London with his youngest son William, where they set up a shop at 113 Ratcliff Highway, Stepney. Not known whether he continued to manufacture knives there or simply became a retailer. The shop continued in business until the 1890s; William Willey the son died in 1896. Only the youngest of his four sons, Frank (born 1860), became a cutler but never married. He lived his last few years in the St. George in the East Workhouse and died in 1913. My great-grandfather was Jasper Willey, one of Frank's elder brothers. I am searching for any cutlery made by William Willey or any of his sons - the family has passed down no heirlooms! Not sure where to look, and would appreciate any suggestions. Contact Stephen by
