CARROLL	William Henry	Blacksmith	1835: William Henry Carroll, blacksmith. Born about 1835 in Doaktown, Canada. William was a blacksmith from about 1860 to the end of his life after 1916. The 1875 birth certificate of son David Everett records Blacksmith as occupation as do the 1871 Blissfield New Brunswick Canada and 1911 Bristol New Brunswick Canada Census. In addition there is a 1906 Fort Fairfield Maine newspaper article in the Fort Fairfield Review which records his occupation as Blacksmith. Contact David by
DAWSON	Benjamin.B.	Blacksmith	1787: Benjamin.G. dawson, blacksmith. Born 1787 Heughead, Strathdon, Scotland. Emmigrated to Canada. 1852 Niagara Census, lists Benjamin as a blacksmith, died 25 Nov 1869. Have wife and children info, pic of stone, pic of Heughead blacksmith shop. DEFORD	Henry Stephen	Blacksmith	1846: Henry Stephen Deford, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born in 1846. Parents: James Deford and Elizabeth Rollison. He learned his trade from George E. Lambert, who operated a carriage shop in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. In 1893, Henry was operating a wheelwright shop out of the Lambert carriage shop, with Ned Ringgold (also in the Blacksmith Index) operating the blacksmith shop. Henry is listed as a blacksmith/wheelwright in the 1870 and 1873 Kent County Directories and the 1903 Maryland Directory. Henry never married and lived for many years with his unmarried sister Kate. His household at times also inlcuded a widowed aunt and a motherless cousin. In the Kent News of 28 April 1934: "Henry Deford, one of Chestertown's oldest citizens, has been quite ill at his home in Chestertown". Henry died in May 1935. He is my great grand uncle and his parents are my great great grandparents. His sister, Mary Elizabeth Deford, married my great grandfather, William Samuel Elburn. DONKERLEY	William (Willy)	Blacksmith	1864: William (Willy) Donkerley , master blacksmith, employer. Born about 1864, Batley, Yorkshire, England. The 1891 UK census lists William as 17yrs at Gateland Lane, Shadwell, Yorkshire with wife Annie nee Sparling, 25yrs (born Thorner YRK). No children. 1901: 37yrs, master blacksmith and employer living in Holbeck, Leeds. William and Annnie Sparling, married in 1890. They had 10 living children and emigrated to Canada in about 1910. DUPONT	Louis	Blacksmith	1889: Louis Dupont, blacksmith,horse and wagon. Born 1889, in pont-rouge and died in 1965 in Québec city. Louis was Blacksmith during ww1 for the 68th bat of Regina (1917-1919). I have picture of him and still have if military Rank. He move with his family to Lisieux, Saskatchewan in 1905 and came back to Québec city in 1937. During his time at Lisieux, he was the blacksmith for this town . See 1901 census for father Edward born 1852 ( listed in Blacksmith of Durham & Yorkshire), mother Jane Ann Eleanor & list of several siblings. The three Garvey boys: John Andrew, Cecil Joseph Gt. Garvey & William Joseph Garvey, moved to Canada, some working as blacksmiths there. John Andrew joined the Canadian Overseas Force and is killed in the First World. GLADSTON	William	Blacksmith	1806: William Gladston, blacksmith. Born.23rd December 1806, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England . William was brother of Robert (blacksmith in Berwick upon Tweed). William married Eleanor Shanks 1830 and emigrated 1832. Worked for Hudson Bay Co. d.8/6/1855 Boston, Mass. USA visiting son Robert. Another son, William Shanks Gladstone became a carpenter on Mountain Hill, Alberta m 1855 Harriet Leblanc a French RC Blackfoot Indian. Mount Gladstone named after him. PHIPPEN	Francis	Blacksmith	1840: Francis Phippen, blacksmith. Born about 1840, Twerton, Somerset, England. The 1841 UK census lists Francis as 1yr old living in Twerton with parents. See Blacksmiths of Somerset for parents, blacksmith Henry and Charlotte Phippen plus his sister Ann. In 1851 Francis is 12yrs, with his family at High Street Twerton. 1871 finds Francis 31yrs, in London, Kensington, St Peter Hammersmth. Wife Flora Maria 29yrs (born Bridgenorth Shropshire). Children: Henry William 5yrs; Francis Godfrey 3yrs. 1881: Francis 41yrs, living at Fulham, 21 Hilmer st, London; Flora 39yrs. PHIPPEN	Henry	Blacksmith	1811: Henry Phippen, blacksmith. Born about 1811, Somerset, England. Died: March quarter 1894, Somerset. The 1841 UK census lists Henry as 30yrs, living in Twerton, Somerset with wife Charlotte 30yrs (born Somerset). Children: Ann 8yrs; Francis 1yr. In 1851 Henry is 46yrs, in High Street Twerton; Charlotte 46yrs; Ann 17yrs; Francis 12yrs (became a blacksmith) and Martha 7yrs. 1871: Henry is 65yrs, now a labourer, living at Farmers Close, Twerton; Charlotte 64yrs and daughter Martha 26yrs, unmarried. St John	Michael	Blacksmith	1819: Michael St John (Sinjohn), blacksmith. My 4th great grandfather Michael St-John, (born in Ireland, died 1859 St Romauld, Quebec) and wife Mary Power were living in Quebec City, Canada by 09 Oct 1819 for the birth of son Thomas. The family was in Frampton Township, Quebec by Feb 1822 for the baptism of son John., before moving back to Quebec City by 1851 and then to St-Romauld, Quebec. His occupation as blacksmith was recorded on his death registration. Sons Thomas and James were also recorded on censuses and bmd registrations as blacksmiths. There is a possibility that Michael first settled in Newfoundland after leaving Ireland. His daughter Ellen/Helen recorded on the 1851 and 1891 censuses that she was born in Newfoundland. It is worth noting that nearly all Irish immigrants to Newfoundland in that time were from within 40 miles of Waterford City, Co. Waterford, Ireland. I have indeed found a baptismal registration for a Michael St John, baptized 8 Jan 1773, St-Patrick’s, Waterford City, son of James St John and Catherine Hearn. While I cannot yet prove this is my Michael’s bapt registration, it does seem to fit: (1) location; (2) timing, (3) names of Michael’s sons are the same as the names of Michael’s father and brothers (Irish Naming Tradition). Michael St John and Mary Power had the following children: (1) James, ca 1815-1874, m Margaret Powell, (2) Ellen/Helen, ca 1819-1891, m Nicholas Fortune; (3) Thomas, 1819-1876, m Mary Crosby; (4) John, 1822-1907, m Sarah Jane Whitty; (5) Margaret, 1824-1913 m Alexander Balfour/Belford; (6) Bridget, 1829-1903, m George Hennessey; (7) Michael, 1833-1839; (8) Mary, 1833-aft 1900, m James Smith.
