Biography :
John Streff 45th
Wisconsin Infantry residence Milwaukee.
The Streff family arrived in the USA on July 6,
1847 on board the Cate The parents Jean Baptiste 50 and Margaretha 50
with their children Elen 16, Peter 10, Jean 7, Anna Maria and Susan 6, Barbe 5.
They settled in Fredonia, Ozaukee Co, Wisconsin where I find them in the 1860
census with Peter 25, Anna Maria 21, Susanna 18 and Barbara 16. Not many trace of John Streff after the
war. A farm laborer with Henry Parchen family in Ohio Twp, Bureau Co, Illinois
in 1880. He filled his pension claim in 1889 in Minnesota and I found him at
Vermillion Station, Nininger Twp, Dakota Co. , Minnesota in the veteran schedule
of 1890 and in his Home history where he state having contracted a right
inguinal hernia in 1885 at that place. He was admitted in the Soldiers' Home in
Wisconsin or rather asked to enter the Home in January 1896 and six month latter
he was dropped not having joined during that time. I find a John "Striff" in the
1900 census. A day laborer, born Febr. 1836 in Germany, and having emigrated in
1847. Not quite a good match as when entering in the Home in January 1906 he
stated being born Belgium on February 2, 1837(not 1836), a single and laborer by
trade, nearest relative his brother Peter Streff, Decada, Wisconsin. He left
the Home on June 20, same year. As to their origin, the family, following the
various censuses, said Belgium, Luxemburg or Germany. Sources :
