Biography :
Civil War, Regimental Description Book, New York State, Van Sype Louis (also
VanSipe) 96th Regiment Co. I , 28 years, 5 Ft. 5 1/4 in., complextion light,
eyes blue, hair brown, born Belgium, occupation sailor. Enlistment April 7,
1865, 1 year, substitute for George Snepper, Pd $580. Mustered in Buffalo,
New York, Apr 7, 1865. Mustered out at City Point, Virginia, Feb. 6, 1866.
Louis was married & father of two children at the time he joined the Civil
War. Returning to Detroit, Michigan, he then resumed his occupation as a sailor, until 1871 when he Homestead in Northern Michigan. Louis Van
Sype/Van
Sipe became a pioneer of Alpena County, Michigan & lived there until his
death in Sept 1901.
