Biographies :
When Nicholas Goedert was admitted in the Wisconsin Soldiers' Home on February 12, 1912, on old age, he stated having enlisted on October 11, 1864 in Davenport, Iowa, in Company A, 2nd Iowa Infantry. Being born Belgium, 68 y.o., a farmer with residence Minneapolis, Minnesota, married, his wife Margaret Goedert living at La Mars, Iowa. Pension certificate: 1135498.

When I checked the rosters of Iowa Infantry, I found two Nicholas Goedert but as each referred to the other I believed they were one Nicholas Goedert in the same Unit as the rosters listed them with the same references with one exception: the age: the one in Co. A with age 21, and the other one in Co. D with age 23. So, I also assumed there was some mistake when the rosters were written and those men were one man shifted from one Company to the other.

Nicholas Goedert: 2nd and 3rd Iowa Infantry Consolidated, Co. A. Age 21
Residence Polk County, nativity Belgium. Enlisted Oct. 11, 1864. Mustered Oct. 11, 1864. Mustered out July 12, 1865, Louisville, Ky.(see Co. D)

Nicholas Goedert: 2nd and 3rd Iowa Infantry Consolidated, Co. D. Age 23
Residence Polk County, nativity Belgium. Enlisted Oct. 11, 1864. Mustered Oct. 11, 1864. Mustered out July 12, 1865, Louisville, Ky.(see Co. A)

Something weird or exceptional but it became more complicated when I found two pension index cards concerning them. Searching the censuses I found a Nicholas Goedert in Iowa and one in Nebraska. And, following the pension certificate n, I was able to say the one in Iowa was the good one. More, as a widow application was done in 1893 in Nebraska, the Nicholas Goedert in Nebraska was dead for some time when the other one was listed with the 1920 census at the Iowa Soldiers' Home.

As Nicholas Goedert put his residence in Nebraska after discharge (and see if those two Nicholas Goedert were somewhere related) I also checked for the one in Nebraska. At last I was able to separate the two families.

Another weird thing: the Nicholas Goedert in the Iowa Soldiers' Home stated being a widower from the 1900 census till his death. But, when entering the Wisconsin Soldiers' home in 1912, he stated being married. I have not found his wife in the 1900 census but from the 1910 census till her death she also assumed being a widow. Was the Nicholas Goedert in the Iowa Soldiers' Home a third Nicholas Goedert ? The result of my investigations is in the following table:
