The 1850 population is that of Clark and Lewis Counties, Oregon Territory; census coverage extended only to the southwestern part of present-day Washington.

The 1860 census coverage included nearly the whole present State, and some persons in present-day northern Idaho and northwestern Montana (settlers in the Bitter Root Valley).

Washington became a separate territory and acquired essentially its present boundaries in 1863. Idaho became a separate territory the same year and acquired essentially its present boundaries in 1868.

The 1870 census coverage included all of the present State.

The existing counties in 1860 were : Island, Whatcom, Clallam, Kitsap, Jefferson, Klickitat, Pacific, Chehalis, Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, Spokane, Snohomish, Thurston, Lewis, Pierce, King, and Walla Walla.

* Spokane covered, in 1860, almost all of the east part of Washington territory, Idaho and the settlers of the Bitter Root Valley in now western Montana.
