Abstract of Civil War Widow's Pension File of Elizabeth Selvey
Widow of George W. Selvey, Co. I, 4th MO Volunteer Cavalry


George W. Selvey mustered in as private, Capt. Rice's Co. (Co. I), MO Cavalry Volunteers on June 6, 1861 at St. Louis, MO.

Description of George W. Selvey at time of enlistment: born Harrison Co., VA; 35 years old; 5' 9" in height; hair, complexion and eyes, all dark.

George W. Selvey wounded in skirmish with the enemy on July 24, 1862 near Santa Fe, Mo.; wounded July 28, 1862 in Callaway Co.; killed in battle of Moor's Hill (or Mill), July 30, 1862.

George W. Selvey and Miss Elizabeth Johnson married June 24, 1851 in Peoria Co., Ill., by John Johnson, Justice of the Peace.

Children of George and Elizabeth Selvey living at the time of soldier's death:
George Washington Selvey, born July 4, 1853 at Florence, Pike Co., IL
Kader Selvey, born January 4, 1856 at Florence, Pike Co., IL
Hester Ann Selvey, born Sept. 16th, 1857* at Chandlersville, Cass. Co., IL
Sarah Augusta Selvey, born March 19, 1862 at Milton, Pike Co., IL

Elizabeth Selvey admitted to pension roll at the rate of $8 per month, commencing July 28, 1862; an additional $2 per child under the age of 16, commencing July 25, 1866.

Elizabeth Selvey dropped from pension roll because of death; last payment of $12 month paid on Oct. 4, 1902.


*there is a descrepancy in the files regarding the month of Hester's birth; three references say it is September and three say December.
