Mattie (Mehaffey)(McClelland) Alexander and James Alexander raised s. of Mattie and Edwin McClelland. His name:

  1. Elmer McClelland, b. 3 July 1890, m. Gladys Steward, 23 Sept. 1925. She was b. 15 Oct. 1904, dau. of Fred Steward and Alice (Blaylock) Steward. Fred d. 1943, Alice d. 1935.

    Elmer worked for Western Auto Supply Co., Los Angeles, Calif. for many years. He d. 4 April 1974.

    Their children: [Two sons, who each married and had children, 2 for eldest son, 3 for younger; also raised, but did not adopt, a young girl from an orphans home in Elmira, NY.]

THE MEHAFFEY FAMILY

MEHAFFEY, SR. and WIFE, names unknown, both born in Ireland, came from Co. Down to America, settled in Iowa [family actually settled in Ohio, which sounds similar to Iowa] first then moved to Illinois. He was six feet tall, weighed 200 pounds, had red hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, was Presbyterian, Scotch-Irish descent. Their children:

  1. Sam Mehaffey, lived in Illinois.

  2. John Mehaffey, lived in Illinois.

(1) Martha Jane Jackson, dau. of Elisha Davis Jackson and Celia Isabel (Millhollen) Jackson, 4 July 1863, in Little York, Warren Co., Ill. They were divorced about 1879. Martha was b. 16 April 1844, d. 27 June 1920, Wilsey, Kansas. James m. (2) Teresa Taylor 1 July 1881, Arnour, Missouri.

    James Mehaffey was a harness maker, farmer, painter and Civil War veteran. He enlisted in the Union Army at Monmouth, Warren Co., Ill., 24 Apr. 1861 while living in Little York, Ill., as private, Capt. Palmer's Co., 1 Reg't. Ill. Mtd. Vols.* He was captured and paroled at Lexington, Mo., 20 Sept. 1861. The enl. men were mustered out by order of Gen. Fremont 9 Oct. 1861. This action was rescinded by S. O. of No. 335, War Dept., dated 21 Dec. 1861 and the Officers and enl. men were considered as in continuous service. He was mustered out in St. Louis, Mo. 14 July 1862, because his services were no longer required.

    *This Org. later became Co. G, 1 Reg’t. Ill. Cav. Co.

    In addition to Ill., he lived in Des Moines, Iowa five years and in 28 different states or territories, spending his last 13 years in Los Angeles, California.

    A legend in the family is that his parents died when he was about 10 years old, and an aunt and uncle, strict Presbyterians, raised him. He became a Bible student.

THE MEHAFFEY NAME

Mahaffy, McAfie, is a Scottish name, and Mehaffy is shown as a variation in the spelling of Mahaffy. English forms of Mahaffey are MacFie and MacHaffy which are most commonly found in Co. Donegal, Ireland.

The name Mahaffy has been common in Ulster Province, Ireland for about 350 years. There are 32 counties in each province. The name is spelled both Mahaffey and Mehaffey in America.

MILLER LINE

The J. B. Miller farm home was located about two miles from the Bunce farm home in Tecumseh, Township, Shawnee County, Kansas.

The Miller descendants live at Rossville, Silver Lake and at other points in Kansas as well as in other states.

MILLER NAME

Our research revealed that Miller is an English name derived from the occupation “miller of grain.”

Abraham Armstrong, b. 1772, married Ruth Conwell 11 Jan. 1795. She was born 7 June 1774, and died 22 Apr. 1866.

Jonathan Miller, b. 29 Apr. 1777, married Brashear, she was b. 3 Dec. 1768.

Judge Isaac Newton Roberts, b. 29 July 1802, in Penna. married Matilda Lawrence 14 Dec. 1827. She b. 22 Feb. 1807 and d. 16 Sept. 1867. He died 15 July 1878, Big Springs, Kansas.

Liberty Miller, b. 22 Nov. 1799 married Elizabeth Armstrong, She b. 10 May 1801 and died 28 Sept. 1846. He died 16 Sept. 1846.

“Our society chain was broken for the time by death of Sister Miller. She was a true and steadfast member of our society and her death will be greatly mournd [sic] by all but what is our loss is her eternal gain.

“Resolved that we part with our sister with regret and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the loving husban [sic] and motherless children.

“Resolved that we are assured that she was a devoted Christian whose goodly example if practiced by all would not only profit in this world but assure an abundant entrance into the eternal joys of the bright beyond.

On the second half of the folded stationary is the following unsigned letter:

“News reached this vicinity last Saturday that Mrs. Alida Miller wife of John Miller who resides at Valencia was dead Mrs Miller was well known in this neighbor­hood and the news of her death was shocking to her relatives and friends she was the only daughter of Peter Bunce of Tecumseh Mrs. Miller leaves a large family under the care of a kind and loving father Mrs. Miller had the best care during her illness Mr. Miller and several lady friends being at her bedside until death relieved her of her troubles over too [sic] hun­dred people attended the funeral at there [sic] house on Saturday and Sunday her remains were laid to rest in the little cemetery at Bethel in Tecumseh Township”

THE MILLHOLLEN LINE

Mulholland means grandson of. In Ireland the name was found in the form of Mulholland along with the variations Mulhollan and Holland. In records from the twelfth to eighteenth century, there were still other variations in spelling the name. A report stated that in countries of origin when people crossed a country line, it was common for them to change the spelling of their name. The form Milhollen was not found in the records of Ireland we searched, nor did we find a record of the family emigrating to Ireland from another country.

In Pennsylvania the name was found in the form of Milholland, Millhollen, Mulholland and Mulhollin; in North Carolina, Milholan, Milholland, Milholen and Mulhollon; in Virginia, Milholland and Millhollen. North Carolina records are incomplete because some were destroyed by fire.

John Milholan (family unidentified) and Peggy Brown were married 3 April 1809 by John Huggins, Esquire, who later performed the marriage ceremony for David Milholen and Mary Gray on 8 August 1815, both in Iredell County, North Carolina. It is possible that John and David were brothers with both last names misspelled. The children of David Milholen and Mary (Gray) Milholen spelled their name Millhollen. This verifies the Millhollen family lived in the Salisbury District in Iredell County, North Carolina.

The following names were recorded on a sheet of paper found in an old Bible owned by Cecelia Isabel (Millhollen) Jackson and Elisha Davis Jackson: Hollen, Millholan, Millhollen and Millholland.

The fact that David Askins Ebenezer Millhollen and William Millhollen, sons of David A. Millhollen, gave their surname as Mulholland in the U. S. census of Linn County, Oregon in 1870 indicates that their grandfather’s name was Mulholland when he arrived in America. Edward Mulholland and family near Pleasant Hill, [Lane Co.,] Oregon were on the census list also.

In Ireland the Mulhollands (Millhollens) were active in the Irish Rebellion on the side of the Presbyterians. Several served in the House of Commons and were members of the influential class.

The ancestors in Ireland were linen manufacturers. The eldest son inherited the family fortune so the father of David A. Millhollen, being a younger son, came to America to seek his fortune. Oregon Millhollens were of the opinion their ancestors came through Holland on their way to America.

They first settled in Pennsylvania. Later many Scotch-Irish families travelled down the Shenandoah Valley to North Carolina and Virginia. The Millhollens joined them and settled in N. Carolina.

After 31 March 1832 when their son, William J., was born, the David A. Millhollen family moved from North Carolina to Stanford, Kentucky. In 1833 they moved to Jackson County, Indiana, near Medora, or about 40 years after David A. arrived in America.

DAVID A. MILLHOLLEN, b. in Ireland 1791, arrived in America in 1793 with his parents. Married Mary Gray [born 2 December 1791] 8 Aug. 1815 by John Huggins, Esquire, (Evidently Justice of Peace) who lived near Center Church, Iredell Co., N. Carolina. David d. 1850, Mary d. 1840. Names of their children:

  1. John Pinckney Millhollen, b. 3 June 1816, m. had family, wife d. Stillwater, Oklahoma on her 90th birthday per letter 10/1/1928.

  2. Cecelia Isabel Millhollen (Isabel Celia on their marriage certificate) b. [9] Dec. 1818, m. Elisha Davis Jackson in Jackson Co., Indiana, 19 Oct. 1842, d. 30 Oct. 1902, Cedar Vale, [Chautauqua Co.] Kansas, buried there.

    Mary (Gray) Millhollen, mother of these children, died in 1840 when Cecelia was 22 years old so she helped to raise her younger brothers and sisters, taking the youngest children with her when she married. She was an excellent manager. About 1845 they moved from Jackson Co., Ind., to Muscatine, Iowa where they lived two years, then moved to Oquawka, Henderson Co., Ill. In fall 1869 moved to Kansas.

  3. James Alfred Millhollen, b. 26 Aug. 1820, d. on trip to Ind., age 13 yrs. The family found it very hard to leave him behind lying in a strange land.

  4. Matilda Millhollen, b. 25 Dec. 1821, m. John Forgey, buried at or near Waterville, Oregon.

  5. Milton Millhollen, b. 19 Dec. 1823.

  6. Mary Emaline, b. 22 Apr. 1825, m. James Forgey, lived near Corvallis, Oregon, later moved near coast not far from Tacoma, Washington.

  7. David Askins Ebenezer Millhollen, b. 15 Jan. 1827, N. Car., d. 26 Jan. 1904, Albany, Ore. m. Mary Shearer 7 July 1853, b. 1836, d. 1902. They lived near Corvallis and Albany, Ore. He arrived Ore. 27 Aug 1852, settled on Claim No. 4284 18 Sep 1853. The 1870 U. S. Census listed David Mulholland showing children with the same names as listed herein as children of David and Mary Millhollen.

  8. Theressa Jane Millhollen, b. 22 May 1829, m. Seth Hinckley, lived in Oregon. He d. in Oklahoma, age about 100 years.

  9. William J. Millhollen, farmer, b. 31 Mar. 1832, N. Car., m. Elizabeth Shearer 19 July 1858. She b. 1840 in Illinois. He d. 29 Feb. 1892. Lived at Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. Arrived Ore. 27 Aug 1852, settled on Claim No. 4219 September 1853. The 1870 U. S. Census listed William Mulholland with children having same names as listed herein as children of William and Elizabeth Millhollen.

  10. Fielding — letter dated 21 Jan. 1940 indicated he was a member of this family.

Children of John Pinckney Millhollen and wife (name unknown):

  1. John M. Millhollen, lived in Stillwater, Oklahoma; was killed before his mother died; m. Mary Rannels; worked for hardware and implement co.; went to London, England, in the employ of someone at one time. Their children:

    (1) Mary D. Millhollen, grad. A&M University, Stillwater, Okla.; m. a banker, moved to Nebraska.

    (2) Rena Millhollen, grad. A&M University, Stillwater, Oklahoma.

  2. D. Wesley Millhollen, m. in Illinois in 1880’s; moved to Ore., buried Oakville Cemetery near Corvallis, Oregon; in War 1861-65; deaf. Their children:

Children of Cecelia Isabel (Millhollen) and Elisha Davis Jackson: Cecelia and Elisha Jackson were great grandmother and great grandfather of G. K. Bunce children. See Jackson and Mehaffey lines for names of Jackson children and line of descent.

  1. William Henry Millhollen, b. 1855, Oregon m. (name unknown). Both bur. Oakville Cemetery, Corvallis, Oregon. Their ch: Lloyd Millhollen, b. about 1883, druggist, Corvallis, Ore., m. _______ Gillivray (first name unknown). Both d. 1972, bur. Oakville Cemetery near Corvallis, Oregon.

    Three or four other children of Wm. H. Millholland died in infancy.

  2. Sarah Jane Millhollen, b. 1857, Oregon, m. Porter (first name unknown) names of children unknown; descendants may still be living in Albany, Oregon area.

  3. Mary A. Millhollen, b. 1859, Oregon, m. Dr. Louis Albert Banks, d. when dau. born. Dr. Banks with Anti-Saloon League, Brooklyn, New York at one time. Their dau: Faye, m. ______ Hamblin (first name unknown). Faye reared in her Grandfather Millhollen’s home.

  4. Julia Millhollen, b. 1862, Oregon, m. McKnight (first name unknown). Their ch:

    Edna McKnight. She searched Netherlands America Foundation of Holland and her Colonies in N.Y.C., for information as to probable date the Millhollens left Holland for North America.

  5. Catherine (Katie) Millhollen, b. 1865, Oregon, m. Thorp (first name unknown). Their ch:

    Marie Thorp, b. 1898, m. Leroy S. Campbell. Their child: Leroy S. Campbell. Marie said her Grandfather was a grand old man and beloved by everyone.

Children of Lloyd Millholland and Mrs. (Gillivray) Millhollen:

  1. Jewell Millhollen, d. few days after birth.

  2. Lloyd Millhollen, retired Asst. Supt. Schools, Eugene, Ore., m. (name unknown), had son, possibly more ch., names unknown.
