Francis (Frank) M. Whiteman's parents were Henry H. & Betsy Ann Whiteman.
Great Grandpa Frank Whiteman served in the Civil War. He was wounded by a
small cannonball which handicapped him the rest of his life. Grandpa Fred
(Clarence) Whiteman, being the oldest started to work at the age of 14 on a
sawmill.
This information was gathered by Uncle Gene (Fritz) Whiteman through newspaper
clippings, taped interviewing of Uncle Harry Miller and mostly confirmend at the
Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Carnegie information mentioned that a
small church between Sigel and Brookville (Hall, Pa.) were still being cared for
by the G.A.R. Uncle Gene found the grave there covered with moss and a small
flag in a metal holder by a tombstone that was hard to read.
This information was written in a letter dated December 11, 1981 by Uncle Gene
to Larry Baughman. I believe the grave he is talking about is Frank Whiteman.
There is now a 2nd smaller tombstone marking the grave. The old tombstone
indicates Frank was a Private in Company 1148 of the Pa. Volunteers.
Had 1 note that Frank was born in Adison N.Y. and was a farmer. Also that he had
Apoplexy for 2 days.
