John Angst Family History

Mary Forena Jaggli


John ANGST  was born  the son of John Joseph ANGST and  (Mary) Anna WIDMER in Switzerland (probably in Wil, Canton Zurich) on October 14, 1850.  Little is known about John's early life see John and Anna Angst Family History.  About 1883,  John (picture) made a personal decision to leave Switzerland (for reasons unknown) and immigrate to the United States.  He apparently followed other German speaking immigrants to the west, and  ended up working as a farm hand in Hand County, South Dakota. He filed a letter of intent to become a citizen of the United States on March 2nd, 1886, and his final certificate of naturalization was approved by the District Court on 20 November 1891.

Mary Forena JAGGLI was born the in Switzerland (parents unknown) on April 28th, 1864.  She immigrated to Kolda township in Hand County, South Dakota (picture).


John Angst and Mary Jaggli met while residing in Hand County.  They were married on May 26th, 1893 by Justice of the Peace H.W. Chapman, in Volney, SD (marriage license).

On January 13th, 1894, John filed a Homestead Patent (Certificate No. 5086, Application 11324) under the Homestead Act of 1862, for 160 acres in the "North West Quarter of Section 23 of the township of Volney in Hand County, South Dakota - One Hundred and Fifteen North of Range Seventy West of the Fifth Principal Meridian.

The couple's first child, Joseph Valentine was born on February 14th, 1895 in the township of Polo, South Dakota.   Joseph later married Mary Ann VAN LANEN and the couple had seven children (Joseph Valentine Angst Family History).

 John and Mary's second child Anna Marie was born on September 20th, 1896, and the family is pictured to the below.. After Anna grew up she married Gustave A. KIRCHNER. They had no children.

John, Joseph, Anna Marie, MaryOn February 29th, 1898 the family sold their homestead to Franklin Blackman of Ogle County, Illinois for the sum of one dollar and a mortgage of one hundred and fifty dollars.  Sometime after the sale of the homestead, the Angst family moved to Marshfield, Wood County, Wisconsin, where John was employed as a custodian at the Blodgett Hotel. John is pictured below (far left) with the other hotel employees.  On May 13th, 1903, John and Mary purchased a farm on ten acres of land from L.C. and Alice Harriel, for $180.00.  They resold the land on the same day to Adam Hafer for $850.00, keeping the rights to live in the house and working the land.

Mary Anna gave birth to their third child, Mary, in Marshfield on September 22nd, 1903.  When Mary was grown she married Edward Radke and raised seven children (Edward Radke Family History*).

The 1910 U.S. Census documents the Angst family as follows:

Joseph left home in 1910 and moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where he obtained work in an upholstery shop. At  about this time - June 18th, 1910, the family also sold the farmhouse to Otto C. Hahn for $100.00.  Joseph became ill with an abscessed hip, so the family moved to Sheboygan to care for him, arriving on September 22nd, 1912 (Anna's sixteenth birthday).  They took up residence at 1003 South Fourteenth Street  (photo) and John worked at the Northern Furniture Company.

John Angst died on May 23rd, 1916 at home in Sheboygan, Wisconsin at the age of 65 (death certificate).  After his fathers death Joseph moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin and opened his ow upholstery business. Mary Angst died on October 10th, 1920 (death certificate).  She was depressed and committed suicide by hanging herself from the rafters of the cellar in her home.  Both John  (grave) and Mary (grave) are buried in Wildwood Cemetery, Sheboygan Wisconsin.  Anna married Gustave A. Kirchner, and the couple lived in her parents home (picture).

ANGST Ancestry 

The ANGST (literally "fear" in german) surname appears to originate in Wil, Canton Zurich, Switzerland.  The earliest identified Angst ancestor in our research is John Joseph ANGST who married (Mary) Anna WIDMER (1819 - ?).  This family is the current focus of our research, and very little is known about them (John Joseph Angst Family History).  They did, however, have at least one child John ANGST (1850 - 1916) who married Mary Forena JAGGLI (1864 - 1920).  They were blessed with three children (John Angst Family History) the first of which was Joseph Valentine ANGST (1895 - 1965) who married Mary Ann (Marion) VAN LANEN the family described above.

WIDMER Ancestry 

The Widmer surname originates in Switzerland.  At this time this surname is still under research.  The only known Widmer ancestor at this time is (Mary) Anna WIDMER (1819 - ?). It is believed, that Anna is the daughter of Casper WIDMER and Maria HUNZIKER, and a sister to Gottfried WIDMER who immigrated from Canton Aargau, Switzerland around 1852 or 1854) to LeSeur County Minnesota.  Research has provided no positive linkage to date for this belief.  Anna Widmer married John Joseph ANGST and had at least on son John ANGST whose family is described above.


JAGGLI Ancestry 

Little is known about the Jaggli (Jaeggli) ancestry.  The name is Germanic from either Germany or Switzerland.  The only known Jaggli ancestor at this time is Mary Forena JAGGLI (1864 - 1920, parents unknown) who married John ANGST (1850 - 1916) and are described above.
