The Coroner Mr C E Weston WACHER praised people who tried to get a young woman out of a car, which plunged into the HAUMOANA lagoon late on the night of September 6.

At an inquest into the death of 20-year-old Janis Noeline JACKSON, Taradale Rd, NAPIER, Mr WACHER also commented on the lack of adequate signposting in the area of the accident. Mr EACHER found that Miss JACKSON died by asphyxia caused by drowning in the car, which went off the end of COLLISON Terrace into the lagoon.

Witnesses Sharon Joan MURPHY, Hastings said that she was with Miss JACKSON at her home when Myles Peter YOUNG picked them up. They went by car with him to Clifton.
Mr YOUNG, an Australian said he picked up the two girls at Napier and all three were drinking on the way out to a party at Clifton attended by 30 to 50 people. The car hit the water and went under, but landed right way up and filled with water slowly. He tried to find Miss JACKSON in the car and then had to get out of the car. He went down again to the car after reaching the surface. He found the car but could not control his breathing and had to go up again. Others then came on the scene. He pleaded guilty in the Napier court to causing the death by Miss JACKSON by driving with an excessive blood alcohol level and was fined $500 and disqualified for three years Jacob Manu SCOTT and Alexander George Brown ROBIN, both Collison Terrace residents, said they heard a car travelling along the street at high speed. There was no sound of deceleration or braking. Constable P J SCHMIDT said Mr YOUNG was shocked and hysterical. Later he was taken to Napier hospital and a blood sample was taken with an alcohol level of 157 mg. Mr WACHER said there was no doubt the tragic death of the young woman resulted from driving at high speed and the inadvertence or inattention of the driver in failing to find the turning on the road.

Fifteen year of John CUNNINGHAM saved a Newman’s bus from blazing in central Hastings today. The drama made an exciting first day to John’s school holiday job at the Karamu Mower Court Karamu Rd Hastings. Just before noon John saw smoke and flames coming from the driver’s side of the bus as it travelled south along Karamu Rd. Accompanied by 16-year-old Anthony IRWIN, they chased the bus a quarter of a mile to the At Aubyn St Intersection, where they managed to cut in front of the bus Told the driver about the fire, got the 15 passengers moving out, and used the bus fire extinguisher to put out a small fire in the engine. Mr Ray WEBSTER, the driver, was unaware of the fire. The Manager of the Newman’s Coach Lines, Hastings, Mr R J CARDO, said John deserved a vote of thanks for his actions. Mr WEBSTER and the deputy chief fire officer Mr A P BLACKMORE also thanked him.

Police are convinced that the derailment of a goods train one mile from GISBORNE station last night was deliberate. The mechanical engineer in charge of the district from Wellington to Gisborne, Mr L C UPTON was in Gisborne on a routine visit and he estimated damage of $50,000 and said that with a little luck the line could be open tomorrow night. The engine drivers, Mr Joe BLAIR and Mr Russell DICKSON were shaken but uninjured. They were able to clamber from the cab after it came to rest by the side of the track. A Waihi fisherman whose 10 ft dinghy was capsized by a 9ft shark yesterday says his boat is for sale. Sixty-seven year old Mr Jim CARTWRIGHT vowed yesterday that he will sell his “death trap aluminium boat as soon as he gets out of bed.” Yesterday Mr Cartwright and his fishing companion, Mr George DAVIS, 67, were thrown out of the light weight boat when the shark capsized it in calm seas off Boat Bay, north of Waihi beach. The men’s saviour was the Mr Cartwright’s wife Joyce.
