INTERVIEWS AND LETTERS FROM SURVIVORS OF THE 1931

Hawke’s Bay and earthquake

(Feb 3, 1931)

Helen McConnochie

Friends of the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust

Hastings District Libraries

Helen McConnochie’s main career was in Radio New Zealand as Presenter, Producer, Tutor and Script Editor. She initiated several programmes, breaking new ground with Future Indicative, designed as a forum for people with disabilities.

Recording interviews for the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust’s Earthquake Archive has been a continuation of her former work.

The original suggestion from Kathryn Rowe to publish letters from survivors of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake has been extended to include selected extracts from recorded interviews in the H B Cultural Trust Earthquake Archive.

AfterWords is a blending of the two ideas.

June Clarke spent most of her working life at the Hawke’s Bay Herald-Tribune, in Hastings, firstly as a Teletypist and later as a Sub-Editor. Her mother was at Central School in Hastings when the earthquake struck, and June grew up listening to stories of horror and humour from the family.
