BUCKMAN. At Kaikora on the 6th of March, Edward Charles Buckman. Aged 59 years.

The case of Mr Buckman, whose death is my sad duty to chronicle, is a pathetic one. He was struck withlock-jaw arising through cutting a corn until it bled and this caused his death. He was only laid up since Saturday last. His sudden end has cast quite a gloom over the township. The deepest sympathy is felt for Mrs Buckman in her great bereavement. The body will be interred in the new Cemetery tomorrow afternoon. W M Sat Mar 7 1896.

A very large number of friends followed the remains of the late Mr Buckman to their last resting place inthe Kaikora new Cemetery on Sunday last. The body was taken to the church of St James where the Rev A. GARDENER conducted the first part of the service for the burial of the dead. The Reverend gentleman gave a most earnest address and exhorted his hearers to be ready for the last call. After the service a procession was formed in which a large number of the children belonging to the "band of hope" took part and followed the coffin to the Cemetery where the last rites were performed by the Rev Mr Gardener. A case of very sudden death occurred at Kaikora on Tuesday morning last. A man named Anthony Hussey, who had been suffering from heart disease for which he had been under treatment in Napier Hospital, dropped dead without warning upon the verandah of the Railway Hotel, Kaikora. Deceased, who was also known by the name Davis, walked all the way up from Napier during the preceding two days and was intending to resume work in a day or two. An inquest was held yesterday at the Railway Hotel before Dr Todd - Coroner.

Mr Andrew CLARK'S daughter, who died at Patangata on Saturday was buried in the Kaikora North Cemetery on Tuesday. The coffin was carried by six young girls followed by a large concourse of people.

A sudden death at Kaikora was reported to the Coroner, who decided no inquest necessary. A family named Keine came to reside in Kaikora some three months ago. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs KEINE, a woman of mature years, was confined of her first child, being attended by two midwives. On Thursday at midnight the baby, who had shown great weakness from birth, was taken ill. At 2 am it quietened down on, it's mothers arm and she fell asleep, the nurse sleeping by her side. Waking at 6 o clock she found the. baby was in the same position, but dead. (perhaps the baby was George Keine ,whose name appears on the board at Otane Cemetery)WM

CAMPBELL. Mr Neil Campbell died at his residence, Kaikora, on Saturday last from the Isle of Skyehad beenin the Hawkes Bay area for a period of 21 years. On arrival he was appointed overseer and paymaster of roads for some time. Resigning this position he was appointed Inspector of Police. He resigned and erected a Hotel at Kaikora and then engaged in sheep farming. Aged 42 years. Leaves a wife and one child.

Dr TODD was sent for, but the injuries were of such a nature that medical aid was of no avail. - The base of the brain was fractured and blood exuding from one ear. The funeral of the late Mrs E HOLLAND was largely attended yesterday afternoon.
The ceremony was conducted by the Rev W S Bowie of Waipawa, who delivered
a most touching address. After singing a few verses of the Hymn "safe in
the arms of Jesus" he appealed to all present to offer their prayers on
behalf of the bereaved husband and father now left with seven little children.
A sad occasion this has been, the mother leaving a little infant. Everyone
here felt the sudden affliction very much.

McNAUGHTON who was found drowned near the first Taradale bridge in
Napieron Thursday evening last. He left here in the morning to attend the races
having first procured an extra ticket for his wife to go to Napier next

On Sunday a very old identity "Old Jack SHEEHAN" as he was familiarly called here "passed in his checks" somewhat suddenly.
He had visited the township on Saturday last, collected his old age pension and visited one or two places, then went home to his whare. He had been complaining of not being very well for the past few days. He was an old imperial Soldier and drew the Imperial pension. He had live hereover 35 years and was living alone in a whare on Mr J BRITTEN's farm. He prided himself on being the same age as Her Majesty the Queen and therefore was 81 years old. At the Railway Hotel, Kaikora an inquest was held on death of above. Coroner Mr S Johnson. Jury Messrs W Hite (foreman) C McPherson,
G Clark, F Minto, M McRae, W Crawford. Evidence from William Irwin, stableman at Railway Hotel. Ernest Britten, Butcher, Charles Wells butcher employed by E Britten, James Lewis Reed, medical practitioner. Verdict J Sheehan died of Apoplexy.

The body of a young lad, Willie Stuart AULD passed through here yesterday for the new Cemetery, followed by a good number of friends from Elsthorpe, including most of the Brethren of this place, by whom the last sad rites were conducted.
A service was conducted again last evening at the Gospel Hall in memory of the dead, at which Mr Auld, the lads father was present. Inquest held at Elsthorpe. Willie, aged 11 years, son of James Alexander Auld, school teacher of Elsthorpe. James Lex Auld, brother odd Willie, aged 6. Verdict accidental drowning.

The mortal remains of the late William POWELL were interred in the New Cemetery yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of friends. The funeral was conducted by Messrs HARRISON & CURRAN, Evangelists. Deceased was well respected and of a retiring nature and most conscientious ini all his dealings. CARLILE. At her residence, Kaikora on July 8 1904. Janet Carlile. Aged 76 years. An old and highly esteemed resident of Kaikora, Mrs Carlile, passed away on Friday morning in her 77th year. She came to reside here on the death of her daughter, the widow of the late Robert (MOFFOT?), MOFFITT, who was well known throughout Hawkes Bay. The orphans immediately became the care of this noble lady who, with her invalid daughter, mothered a second family and right well she has performed her duties. They revere her as sacred to themselves now and I feel assumed always will. She was a true representative of the old Scottish school and as such was overflowing with faith ... a widow herself, she has left to mourn their loss, three sons Thomas, Duncan and David and one daughter Annie MILNE, children of her first husband. Deceased died in Palmerston last week after an illness of a few days. He had previously lived for many years at Lyttleton, where he was well known. There passed away during Saturday, Edward DARK, a kindly old man, who had seen better days. He landed in N Z in 1853. He and his "late brother" as he used to call him, took up 2000 acres of hill tops in the McKenzie country. They were fairly successful for years until Sir George Grey, as Governor, sold all crown lands at £2 per acre. Then his troubles commenced, what with the cost of new fencing packed up to the tops and the loss of sheep in winter by snow storms, they came down. A few years after, his brother died and Edward Dark pursued his course alone. Some eighteen months ago he purchased, with the few ponds he had left, a small section in Kaikora and built a small hut there hoping to end his days. Two weeks ago he told me that his old enemies, asthma and rheumatism were troubling him and he did not expect to last much longer. The Rev G K Stowell performed the last rites in the Kaikora Cemetery.

The funeral of the late Samuel LOZELL, aged 83 years, took place yesterday. Rev G K STOWELL officiated. The deceased had been ailing for
a few weeks but passed quickly. He had been living with his daughter,

Mrs McKAIN at St Lawrence the past few years. He arrived in H B 50 years ago and in Kaikora in 1865. He was local schoolmaster for many years and was first clerk appointed to the local boards. Being of a quiet and unassuming disposition he was greatly respected. He leaves one son and three daughters.

I have to chronicle another death. Last evening in his 71st year, after a brief illness, died Alexander B STEVEN who had been here from about 1861. For many years he was the village blacksmith and carpenter in turns. He held the position of pound keeper for years, but had been unable to do any manual labour for a long period. For the last 18 months he had been a member of the Town Board and was also a steward of the Methodist Church congregation. He leaves a wife and two sons.

The mortal remains of the late Alexander B STEVEN were laid to rest in the new Cemetery yesterday. A large number followed the cortege to the grave side, when the concluding portion having been sung and read at the residence of the deceased before departure. A solemn and appropriate address was delivered by the Rev W S Bowie, a hymn "Forever with the Lord" was sung and prayers of exhortation concluded the burial service.W M Sat Mar28 1903.

The news of the death of Mrs G McKAY, which took place on Thursday evening was received with much regret. Deceased, who was the youngest daughter of Mr James COLLINS, had been delicate for years and although the result of her visit to Rotorua seemed to greatly benefit her, the improvement was not sustained. Mr James MAULDER, who has resided in Kaikora North for the last 45 years, died on Saturday. Aged 79 years. The boy had been playing on the margin of the creek, which was much swollen at the time, the effects of previous rains, and is supposed to have missed his footing and at once being swept away. A sudden death at Kaikora was reported to the Coroner, who decided no inquest necessary. A family named KEINE came to reside in Kaikora some three months ago. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs Keine, a woman of mature years, was confined of her first child, being attended by two midwives. On Thursday at midnight the baby, who had shown great weakness from birth, was taken ill. At 2 am it quietened down on it's mothers arm and she fell asleep, the nurse sleeping by her side. Waking at 6 o clock she found the baby was in the same position, but dead. (perhaps the baby was George Keine ,whose name appears on the board at Otane Cemetery) WM Sat Feb 9 1889.

Abraham Taylor born in Northowram near Halifax, Yorkshire, son of John and Susannah (nee Spencer) married Pauline Crowther and had 4 daughters, Pauline (Mrs Chas Leach), Lucy (Mrs J C Taylor), 7 (Mrs Richard Croxton) and? )Mrs Howard, Westport), not listed in birth order. Apart from Mrs Croxton all daughters came to N Z with their father on the shIp "Douglas". Pauline Taylor married Charles LEACH 2 Aug 1876 at Te Aute and had 4 children born at Te Aute 1877 - 1892 and 4 children born at Ormondville 1855-1892. Yesterday morning about 8.30 there passed away one of Hawkes Bay's oldest residents inst he person of John. Steven, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr Charles Clark. The deceased gentleman had he lived until February would have been 90 years of age. He came to the province from Australia in the year 1 8~5, which makes him a resident of 39 years standing. A man named Tracey, late surface man for the Hawkes Bay County Council on the Te Aute Road, was found dead in his bed this morning. His Christian name was William and he died at Te Aute Bush. WMSatAug4 1894.

Buckman. At Kaikora on the 6th of March, Edward Charles Buckman. Aged 59 years. The case of Mr Buckman, whose death is my sad duty to chronicle, is a pathetic one. He was struck with lock-jaw arising through cutting a corn until it bled and this caused his death. He was only laid up since Saturday last. His sudden end has cast quite a gloom over the township. The deepest sympathy is felt for Mrs Buckman in her great bereavement. The body will be interred in the new Cemetery tomorrow afternoon. W M Sat Mar 7 1896.

A very large number of friends followed the remains of the late Mr Buckman to their last resting place in the Kaikora new Cemetery on Sunday last. The body was taken to the church of St James where the Rev A Gardener conducted the first part of the service for the burial of the dead. The Reverend gentleman gave a most earnest address and exhorted his hearers to be ready for the last call. After the service a procession was formed in which a large number of the children belonging to the "band of hope" took part and followed the coffin to the Cemetery where the last rites were performed by the Rev Mr Gardener. Funeral of the late Mrs E HOLLAND was largely attended yesterday afternoon. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev W S BOWIE of Waipawa, who delivered a most touching address. After singing a few verses of the Hymn "safe in the arms of Jesus" he appealed to all present to offer their prayers on behalf of the bereaved husband and father now left with seven little children. A sad occasion this has been, the mother leaving a little infant. Everyone here felt the sudden affliction very much.

A sad ending to poor old Allan McNaughton, who was found drowned near the first Taradale bridge Napier on Thursday evening last. On Sunday a very old identity "Old Jack SHEEHAN" as he was familiarly called here "passed in his checks"somewhat suddenly.he had visited the township on Saturday last, collected his old age pension andvisited one or two places, then went home to his whare. He had been complaining of not being very well for the past few days He was an old imperial Soldier and drew the Imperial pension. He had live herover 35 years and was living alone in a whare on Mr J Brittens farm. He prided himself on being the same from age as Her Majesty the Queen and therefore was 81 years old. The body of a young lad, Willie Stuart AULD passed through here yesterday for the new Cemetery, followed by a good number of friends from Elsthorpe, including most of the Brethren of this place, by whom the last sad rites were conducted. A service was conducted again last evening at the Gospel Hall in memory of the dead, at which Mr Auld, the lads father was present. Inquest held at Elsthorpe. A very old settler,in the person of Mrs Ann LIVINGSTON passed away yesterday? of extreme old age, being in her 103rd year. She was very strong and hale old woman away back in the early sixties, always herding her cows on the Te Aute road. For the past two years she has been bedridden and to the day of her death always conversed in her native Gaelic tongue. A pioneer settler of the Hawkes Bay district in the person of Mr James COLLINS passed away at the residence of his niece at Hastings about 5 o'clock yesterday morning. It was not generally known that Mr Collins was failing in health and the news of his death came somewhat as a surprise and was received with great regret. The deceased, who was 73 years of age was a native of Lincolnshire, England and arrived in Hawkes Bay about 40 years ago, spending most of his time in the Kaikora district. He started as a carrier between Napier and Kaikora and then undertook ploughing and other contracts until he was in a position to take up the well known sheep run of Homewood, Kaikora about 5 years ago the deceased decided to take up residence in Hastings. He was elected to a member of the Hastings Borough Council in 1905 and retained the position until his death.WMThursJan7 1909

Another link with the early days is broken. There passed away on Tuesday, at the residence of his daughter Mrs F CCORDELL of Umutoaroa near Dannevirke, William ELLINGHAM at the ripe age of 82. He a his brother Thomas Ellingham, sheep farmers of Ashley Clinton, started the first public house at Te Au called ,by them, "The Two Brothers", before the Great North road was formed through Te Aute Bush They belonged to the 56th Regiment of the Imperial Army stationed at the Bay of Islands, from where they came to Hawkes Bay about 1860, residing here ever since. He was buried at Te Aute today, where wife lies, who predeceased him thirty years ago. He leaves a large family.W M Thur Apr22 1909.

BUCKMAN at Kaikora on the 6th of March, Edward Charles BUCKMAN, aged 59 years.

The case of Mr BUCKMAN, whose death is may sad duty to chronicle, is a pathetic one. He was struck with lock jaw arising through cutting a corn until it bled and this caused his death. He was only laid up since Saturday last. His sudden end has cast quite a gloom over the township. The deepest sympathy is felt for Mrs BUCKMAN in her great bereavement. The body will be interred in the new Cemetary tomorrow afternoon. WM March 7 1896.

A very large number of friends followed the remains of the late Mr BUCKMAN to their last resting place in the Kaikora new cetetary on Sunday last. The body was taken to the Church of St James where the Rev. A. GARDENER conducted the first part of the service for the burial of the dea. The Reverend gentleman gave a most earnest address and exhorted his hearers to be ready for the last call. After the service a procession was formed in which a large number of the children belonging to the "band of hope" took part and followed the coffin to the Cemetary where the last rites were performed by the Rev.Mr GARDENER. "A letter was received by a Waipawa resident from Mr R L PEENE conveys the sad intelligence that Mr A K HOWARD, who left Kalgoorlie some time ago, died in hosptal at Menzies on 3rd July. The unfortunate young fellow, who was well known and highly respected throughout the district was ill with fever for three weeks and brought down rapidly. From Auckland. A man named Florance KELLY slipped on an asphalt pavement receiving injuries to his head and is not expected to live till morning. He has a wife at Waipawa. WM Aug 28 1897

William Charles MONK aged about 7 or 8 died suddenly at Kaikora on Saturday. It appears he had been ailing for some time past with cramp. At 7 am he was found to be suffering with a cold which remained on him all day though he ate his meals. His mother gave him some cherry pectoral to relieve his cough. About 6.30 he was put to bed and began to get worse. The parents tried remedial measures but the little fellow died about 9.30 before the arrival of Dr REED, who had been sent for. The symptoms described were partly attentant on an attack of croup. It was not deemed necessary to hold and inquest. WM Feb 22 1898.

The late Mr DILLON was a native of Wales and came to New Zealand on the first wool ship, the "Southern Cross" in 1857. His first employment was on the late H S TIFFEN'S "Homewood" Estate when he went to Tamumu. At the age of 19 he entered into partnership with Mr C.CLARK of Kaikora North, purchased a team of bullocks and became a public carrier between Napier and the Waipawa County District Mr DILLON then sold out and purchased his father-in-law's property on which he went sheep farming. He also purchased a portion of the Homewood estate…Mr DILLON leaves beside his widow, 9 sons and 3 daughters….Messrs. The funeral of the late Mrs J NEWRICK took place at Hastings on Sunday. I regret to hear that the life of the little girl, Nancy, who was burnt in the accident is despaired of, her back evidently having been injured. WM Tues Feb 15 1916.

Two very old residents of the district, Mr Duncan MUNDELL and Mrs TYLER has crossed the great divide. The formier had been ailing for some time and passed away at the Waipawa Private Hospital. The interment took place today. Mrs Tyler who had reached 'the advanced age of 78 years died early this morning and her funeral is announced for Saturday afternoon at 2.30 pm. W M Thurs Mar 30 1916.
Mr Duncan MUNDELL's funeral report includes - deceased, who was only 66 years of age, was a colonist of 42 years standing. He leaves a family of four, Messrs G & D MUNDELL of Wanganui, Mrs P CLEARY and Miss MUNDELL of Otane.
Mrs TYLER was the mother of Mrs F BURGESS, of Otane. Mrs LOGAN of Woodville and Mrs G MERRY of Wairoa. WMSatAprI 1916.

Mr Harry HARTSHORNE (Waipawa), a very old resident of the district and who had reached the advanced age of 80 years. He visited the mart, on business, and had just signed a receipt, when he was attacked with giddiness and sat down to rest the attack proved fatal. The late Mr Hartshorne has resided in this district for between 40 & 50 years. He had no relatives in Waipawa. WMTuesJune6 1916.

Mr J C TAYLOR, coroner, held an inquest on Friday morning on the body of Charles McPherson, who died suddenly from heart failure. Deceased was a very old identity of somewhat eccentric deposition and lived alone in a little cottage on the main road. He left a considerable sum of money behind, over £50 being found in the house. One of the testaments of his will was that there was to be "no parsons and no flowers" at the funeral. Sat June24 1916.

Mr John James SINCLAIR, a very old resident of the district, passed away on Thursday at the ripe old age of 82 years. Deceased, who was born at Unst, Shetland, arrived in Napier 41 years ago in the ship "Clarence" with his wife and family. For a considerable time they resided in Paradise Road, Napier and 35 years ago took up residence in Otane. Seven years ago he celebrated his Golden Wedding. Since his arrival in the colony most of his time was served on the N Z Railways. Deceased leaves his wife and 3 sons, W Sinclair (Hastings), A Sinclair (Elsthorpe), J H Sinclair (Hautuma) and 2 daughters Mrs B RICE (Hautuma) and Mrs A McKAY (Otane). 30 grand-children and 12 great grand-children.

The town has suffered a distinct loss in the death of Miss SOLEY, who was an old and highly respected g resident and one of those rare individuals, a real philanthropist. Her charities extended all over the district, no one ever went away empty handed from her door and no appeal for help was ever refused. Many a time she went without to help others.
She was a nurse as well as a daughter to her invalid mother, who, in her 83rd year ,is left alone in the world. WM Feb 19 1918

An old and highly esteemed resident of Otane, Mr William FLETCHER, passed away suddenly new years morning as the result of a heart attack. Deceased was a brother of Mr Harry Fletcher ( Town Clerk, Waipawa) and leaves a widow (daughter of the late Mrs COWPER, of Waipawa) and four children. Aged 52 years. Funeral took place on Thursday. On Thursday afternoon the funeral of the late Mr H POLLARD took place at the local Cemetery. Deceased, who had been ailing for a considerable time was operated on as a last resort a week ago but unfortunately without sucess. Mr Cordell was a cousin of Mr W CHEER of Elsthorpe and a brother of Mrs A SINCLAIR, he was in business in Otane for many years and on retiring went to England to live, he leaves a wife and one child. At the local Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev G W DAVIDSON conducted the burial service of the late Mrs HICKS, one of Otane's oldest
pioneers. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, had been a widow for a great many years and the death of her eldest daughter some time back gave her a shock from which she never properly recovered. Mrs HICKS is survived by a family of 3 sons and a daughter, one of the sons being Mr W T Hicks, the celebrated Orpington fancier. WM Tues Jan 61920.

HICKS-At the local Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev G W Davidson conducted the burial service of the late Mrs Hicks, one of Otane's oldest pioneers. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, had been a widow for a great many years and the death of her eldest daughter some time back gave her a shock from which she never properly recovered. Mrs Hicks is survived by a family of 3 sons and a daughter, one of the sons being Mr W T Hicks, the celebrated Orpington fancier. WMTues Jan 81920.

CAMPBELL-Death has claimed another of Otane's oldest residents in the person of the late Mrs Campbell, of Greenhill. She was married about 49 years ago to the late Angus Campbell, of Argyll, Scotland, and with her husband came to Hawkes bay a few years later, where Mr Campbell and his brother, the late Mr Neil Campbell had purchased good areas of land, the first sawmill, saleyards, blacksmiths shop etc, having been built on these properties. Deceased leaves a family of 4 daughters and 4 sons. Mrs R Evans, of Homewood and Mrs McQuilken of Waipawa were her sisters and Mr Donald McLeod of Argyll was her brother. W M Mon Nov 291920.

SOLEY-. At Otane on January 20th. Mary, relict of the late John Soley. Aged 95 years. Funeral on Sunday at 2.30 pm. We understand that the late Mrs Soley bequeathed the whole of her estate, valued at approximately £5000 to £6000 to charitable institutions. McKAY-Mr H McKay this week received word of the death of his father Mr Gilbert McKay Snr at Timaru at the age of 82 years. Deceased was an old identity of Otago, arriving there 63 years ago. After following various pursuits he settled at Balclutha as a farmer. He leaves 6 daughters and 6 sons, including Mr H McKay and Mr Gilbert McKay, of Hastings, Mr Adam McKay of the East Coast and Mr Alex McKay of Woodville. 40 grand children and 8 great grand children. EVANS-A very old and respected settler, in the person Robert Evans, passed away yesterday morning at 7 am Mr Evans was born in the village of Llansantffrraid, Mongomeryshire, Wales 82 years ago, left for N Z in the "Queen of the Mersy" in 1863, landing in Auckland and later at Napier from where he set out for a few months adventure at the Thames goldfields, afterwards returning to Hawkes Bay and settling near Kaikora North, where he resided up to the time of his death. He took an active interest in local affairs having been a member of the Patangata Road Board, Chairman of the School Committee for many years, an elder of the Presbyterian Church and member of the H B Presby and was on several occasions delegate to the SI Presbyterian Assembly. He is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter, Mr W G Evans, sheep WI farmer, Moanui Station, Gisborne. WEDD-An accident occurred on the Patangata road last evening as a result of which Miss Polly Wedd met her death ... She was one of a party of eight of Otane residents who were on their way in Mr E Phillips's taxi car to attend the Spinsters Ball at Elsthorpe. The other members of the party were Misses E Cotton, B Stafford, I Watts, Messrs B Pilcher, W Geange, A Neill, C Graham. As the car was descending the hill near "the Gums", Patangata, it skidded suddenly into a patch of loose shingle. In the efforts of the driver to regain control it zig zagged across the road for a considerable distance and finally brought up against a bank which caused it to capsize Miss Wedd was pinned under the vehicle. WILSON-The residents of this district will regret to hear of the death, in the Napier Hospital, after a long painful illness, of George Wilson. Deceased, who was the son of one of the earlier settlers, was bought up in the Pukehou district. Mrs Clark is survived by her four sons, Mr W Clark (Argyll), James Clark (Otane), John Clark (Wellington) Chas Clark (Waipawa) and three daughters Mrs C Wedd (Otane), Mrs D Dunn (Hastings) And Mrs R Ewart (Wellington). CRAYFORD.-Another of the district's old identities, in the person of Mr W Crayford, was interred in the local Cemetery on Monday afternoon. The funeral was conducted by Rev Brocklehurst. Mr Crayford arrived here with his family over 50 years ago and has been closely identified with the progress of the district ever since. He had reached the ripe old age of 88 years. Mr Crayford was pre-deceased by his wife and only son. His only daughter, Mrs S Cheer, is still a resident in the town. Besides his daughter, Mr Crayford is survived by 9 grand-children and 34 great grand-children. WMWed JuIy22 1925.

McRAE.-Another of the district's old residents passed away on Saturday morning, in the person of Mrs M A McRae, aged 72 years. She had a very short illness, succumbing to an attack of pneumonia. Mrs McRae, who is survived by her husband, two sons and three daughters, arrived in N Z in 1839 and after residing in the Otago district for a long period came to Hawkes Bay 30 years ago and has been associated with the Otane district ever since. RUMBAL-The death has occurred, in the hospital, of William Rumbal, one of the victims of the recent motor bike accident, he only regained consciousness shortly before he died. Deceased was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs John Rumbal, very old residents of the district as was a particularly fine specimen of a young man, being greatly respected by all. His employer, Mr A Rowbottom, paying a very high tribute to his character. He was in his 28th year. The funeral will take place at the local Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. HIGGS.-The death of Mr C Higgs occurred here on Wednesday. Deceased was 84 years of age. He arrived in N Z by the ship "Liecester" in 1876 and settled in the Marlborough district, coming to Hawkes Bay in 1904 and he resided here practically ever since. He leaves a widow, six sons Harry (Wellington), Tom (Poverty Bay), Charles (Nelson), Edward (Levin) William (Wellington), and George (Christchurch) and three daughters([there is a line missing here) thirty grand-children and 8 great-grand-children. ASPLET.-On Wednesday night Mrs A E Asplet died at her home, very suddenly.Deceased, who was one of the oldest district Residents, was of a very kindly disposition and a genuine Christian. She was about in her garden last week, but succumbed to an attack of influenza on Saturday, pneumonia setting in on Tuesday. Mr J Asplet, who has been blind and semi invalid for some time, is also seriously ill with pneumonia, is not in a position to realise his great loss. During the war Mrs Asplet did very good work and was always an enthusiastic worker for the soldiers. The nearest relation to the deceased is a sister in England. WM Fri Apr6 1927.

MINTO.-The funeral of the late Douglas Minto took place on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the funeral there was a short service at the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev F W Robertson, who also officiated at the His grave side.

JC Taylor. Mr Taylor arrived in Wellington in 1865. His life was an adventurous and active one. as a public man he held a record seldom equalled. He saw service in connection with the Maori Troubles. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, joining in Hastings in 1879. For over 25 years he was a Justice of the Peace, and for 16 years a Coroner, Clerk of the Patangata Road Board, 24 years Clerk of the Waipawa Town Board and Chairman of School Committee for a number of years. He was born at Weymouth Marsh, England
and married in the colony and leaves a widow and family of eight Vernon, Percy, Fred and Frank (Fred wounded in France) and Mrs Forsyth, Mrs Tonks, Mrs Doles, Mrs Trower. WM Fri July 11927.

It is with regret that we have to announce the death, at Otane, of Major Searle, licensee of the Railway Hotel. He had been ailing for a considerable time and the end was not unexpected. Of a jovial and good natured disposition, the late Mr Searle made a lot of friends in Otane and district. The funeral will take place at Otane on Friday afternoon. Members of the Abbotsford Lodge, Waipawa, are asked to note that the late Bro Searle was a prominent Oddfellow. WM Wed May 161928.

STAFFORD.-On Saturday afternoon the funeral of Mrs E Stafford's little boy took place at the local Cemetery. The greatest sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents in losing their only son. W M Mon July 9 1928.

COUPER.-Mr Donald McLean Couper died suddenly at his residence yesterday afternoon. As a result of a heart attack. Aged 65 years. Inquest, statements from Freda Margaret Couper, youngest daughter and Mrs Couper. W M Wed Aug29 1928.

EDWARDS.-On Monday morning, there passed away, at the Patangata Pa, one of the districts oldest and best known identities, in the person of Mr W Edwards. Deceased, who was of the old type, was a very upright and popular man and will be greatly missed in his own circle. He was a considerable land owner and a big tangi is being held at the Pa today. WHEELER.-A very old resident of the district, Mr Fred Wheeler, passed away at his residence early this morning, after a long illness. Deceased, who was for many years in the employ of the Patangata County Council. The interment will take place tomorrow. WM Fri Nov 91928.

HENDLE. At his residence, Otane, November 23rd. George, dearly beloved husband of Mary Hendle, in his 61st year. (Wellington papers please copy). Funeral will leave his residence for the Otane Cemetery at 2.30 pm on Sunday. W M Fri Nov23 1928.

HENDLE.- Military Funeral. The funeral of the late George Hendle took place on Sunday afternoon. Rev Mr Hall officiating. As the deceased was a member of the rifle Brigade, which did such splendid service in France. He was accorded a Military Funeral, the firing party being composed of High School Cadets. STACY-One of the district's oldest pioneers passed away at the Waipukurau Hospital on Thursday, in the person of Mr W Stacy. Deceased was born in 1859 at Mr Coopers (Couper?) property at Kairanekae (Kahurangaki 7) and has resided in this district ever since. As a boy of 9 years he drove his first bullock team to Napier in conjunction with his half brother the late Mr P Hickey. Ten bales of wool were considered a fair load. The first days trip being to the Te Hauke graveyard, the second to Pakipaki, the third to the Waiparata Flour Mill and the fourth to the bar of the Ngaruroro river, where the drays were taken over in a punt. He made the first trip barefoot, walking all the way. He had vivid recollection of the big quake about 64 years ago, which lasted on and off for 5 weeks and could remember shooting pigeons in the bush where Otane now stands. All his life he carried on bush work and at one time owned a sawmill at Wairoa and later at Tikokino. He was engaged in laborious! team work up to within a few weeks of his death. In a record of the early days that he left behind he speaks of a trip that he made in a canoe up the Tukituki conveying stones as far as the Tamumu Station. In those days every house had a hand mill to grind a hopper of wheat before they got anything to eat. W M Mon June 30 1930.

CLARK-. At his residence "The Chestnuts" Otane, on Tuesday July 15th. George Clark, beloved husband of F Clark. Funeral St James Church at 2.30 pm on Thursday for Otane Cemetery.

CLARK-Another of the Otane district's old identities passed away yesterday in the person of George Clark, at the of 83 years. Born at Botley, Hampshire in 1847. He was educated at Lymington and Winchester. He arrived at Napier in 1880, taking up land at Kaikora and later at Tamumu. He returned to Kaikora in 1886 and entered into partnership with the Late Mr John Ingleton, which he carried on until the sale of the business to Messrs Langridge and Barrie in 1910. Living in retirement at his residence "The Chestnuts" ever since. Mr Clark took a great interest in public and social affairs, being at one time being a member of the Town Board and the old Library Committee. He was superintendent of the combined Sunday Schools and a member of the Vestry of the Waipawa Parish and on the formation of the Otane Parish, he was elected Church Warden. Mr Clark is survived by his widow and four sons and daughters, Messrs Albert and Douglas and misses Eva and Laura Clark. WM Wed July 16 1930.
