WRIGHT : On 10 Jan of croup at the Junction Hotel, Norsewood, Marion Flora, infant daughter of Arthur & Louisa WRIGHT, aged two weeks
" suffer little children to come unto me".

The funeral of the little daughter of Mr A. WRIGHT took place yesterday. A few personal friends of the deceased's parents followed the remains to their last resting place

Mr L.D. LARSEN who was hurt by falling from his horse some five weeks ago returned to Norsewood from hospital yesterday.

This morning a little girl ,one of the twins belonging to Mr A. QUINLAN lost it's life. She was found head downwards in a bucket of water, the bucket being too heavy to capsize

An enquiry into the cause of the death of Alice Mary QUINLAN was held before the coroner Mr S. JOHNSON at Mr QUILAN's house on Tuesday evening

Deposed :
Margaret QUINLAN - Mother of the deceased. Stated the child was 15 months old and she could not yet walk. She had left the bucket of water in the front room with the chid. She was absent for about 4 minutes. When she returned from the kitchen she found the child head first in the water. Mrs ATHY who was also in the house tried to resucitate her while I sent for the doctor
Mary ATHY - Wife of Simon ATHY - stated she had been visiting Mrs QUINLAN at the time of the accident
Ernest Campbell WILKINSON . A doctor at Danevirke. Said that the childs face was really dark, which would be a sign of suffocation. There were no signs or marks of violence upon the body
The jury at once returned a verdict of accidentally drowned through falling in a bucket of water.

An inquest touching the deatg of Margaret CRAWFORD was commenced at the Masonic Hotel, Danevirke on Tuesday before S. JOHNSON, Coroner.

After viewing the body the inquest was adjourned to 1pm on Wednesday, the foreman having intimated that the jury wished to have a post mortem held. It had been rumored that the deceased died from poison.
Deposed:
Charles FRY : Blacksmith, Danevirke in the employment of Mr ELMBRANCH. The deceased lived in a house, the property of his employer. A man had come looking for the deceased and the witness tried the doors and found them locked and the keys inside. He got a ladder and looked through the window. He saw the deceased lying dead inside on a box. He got down and told Mr GRONNEBAK that the woman was dead, so he went for the constable. The constable came and they took the latch off the back door. The body was kneeling on a box and the face was black and fly blown. The constable and him carried the body into the front room. He thought he had seen the deceased alive about a fortnight ago.
Mary HENDERSON : Resided with her father at Danevirke and that the deceased worked for her father, as a cook. She had last seen the deceased on Saturday 10th in the deceased's kitchen. Deceased had told her she was ill and if someone did not come to see her she woud die. The witness had gone home and told her mother and Mrs LUKE what the deceased had said. When witness last saw the deceased she was lying on a box inside the kitchen door on her side. When the deceased lived at her fathers house she sometimes took schnapps.
John HENDERSON : The deceased had been in his employ as a cook for three months and she had left his employ about three weeks ago, She was a good pianist and thought she could get a better living by teaching music. The deceased came to see Mrs LUKE, an intimate friend of hers who was staying at his house.. The deceased had come to his house to work from Mr HAMILTON's. He had heard the deceased had a sister and had wired her, getting an answer to write full particulars to Picton.

E.W. C. WILKINSON - Medical Practitioner, Danevirke. Had held a post mortem. The deceased's age appeared to be about 35 years ( Goes into great detail about the post mortem). His opinion the immediate cause was inflammation of the bowels with peritonitis. There was not the slightest sign of the deceased being poisoned.
Verdict ; The deceased died by inflammation of the bowel with peritonitis at some period unknown between 10 - 13 Jan 1891

Death of Roderick MATHIESON
Roderick MATHIESON, Head Shepherd at MOORE's Station, Pohui is thought to have been murdered. Mr PREECE, Coroner held the inquest, Inspector KELLY the enquiry and Captain FOSTER took the depositions.
The jury returned a verdict to the ffect that the deceased met his death through being wounded with a sharp instrument, but who inflicted the wound , there is no evidence to show.
The stationhands, ANDERSON & LOPDELL, had thought he had met his death by a kick of a horse and nobody thought otherwise until Constable LEITCH arrived. The constable saw a long deep wound over the right ear which showed the wound must have been inflicted by means of a sharp instrument and this was borne out by Dr CARO's evidence.
AS CHADWICK has disappeared suspicion fell on him. Constables LEITCH, GANTLEY and Detective GRACE are now out scouring the bush for him
CHADWICK is from 45 - 50 years. Married to a maori woman by whom he has a number of children and his family live in a house three miles from the station. We believe that CHADWICK had been living and working in the area of Pohui for the last 15 - 20 years

Mr W.W. CARLILE was drowned while bathing in the Manga - atua River. At the inquest a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. The funeral took place on Saturday and was largely attended

William BAYNE was arrested at Danevirke for deserting his wife. He was brought up at Napier yesterday and remanded to Tapanui

From Porangahau comes news of an accident to one of Mr HEALEY's son's, who by some means was shot in the face by the accidental explosion of a gun. The sufferer was taken to Waipukurau Hospital

From the statistical handbook just published by the Govt. The ages at when people may contract binding marriages in the colony are the same as in England. Twelve years old for females and fourteen for males. For the period 1874 - 1889 12 females under the age of fourteen have married. One of these was only eleven. During the same time only 3 males under the age of seventeen have married, these had all reached sixteen years. Average age of males in the colony who married in 1889 was 29.9 years, for females 24.6 years

Wife Desertion
James ROWE was charged with deserting his wife, Sarah and going to reside beyond NZ. The case was one of the first that had ever been before a jury, certainly as far as Napier was concerned for wife desertion. The accused left his wife in April 1890 but was brought back from Victoria.

We record the death of Mr T. COWPER, Waipawa. He arrived in the district in 1859. He opened the first hotel at Wallingford and subsequently the Empire Hotel at Waipawa. The funeral will take place tomorrow.

Mr Peter THOMSON, Ormondville, who has been ill at the Waipukurau Hospital for a considerable time, died on Thursday last. The deceased leaves a wife & nine children, the eldest being 14 years old.
Mr THOMSON arrived in the ship Ragoon in 1865. He was on of the original founders of the Ormondville settlement, then known as Tua Tua. Of the original settlers only eight are remaining in the district and one of those, Mr PLANK is seriously ill with paralysis. Mr THOMSON's disease, we believe was cancer.

Danevirke School Comm
Mr M. HENDERSON complained that the head teacher, Mr POPPLEWELL had thrown a piece of wood, striking his daughter Jessie on the shoulder. An enquiry is to be held on Monday next.

Death
THOMSON : At the Waipukurau Hospital on Thursday 16 inst, Peter THOMSON of Ormondville, aged 50 years. Deeply regretted.

FREDSBERG : On April 30 at his residence, Danish Line, Norsewood, Anders FREDSBERG Snr, aged 65 years.

Mr Anders FREDSBERG, Snr, native of Sweden, arrived in Norsewood in 1875. The funeral takes place tomorrow, leaving the house on the Danish line at 11am amd arriving at Norsewood Lutheran Church about noon.

Mr ALLARDICE continues to be very unwell and has ben ordered to Australia for a change. He will visit his brother in Melbourne and expects to be absent for six months. The transfer of the Masonic Hote license will go to Mrs ALLARDICE.

BRABAZON : At Napier Hospital on Sunday 10 inst, Rebecca the beloved wife of John BRABAZON of Makotuku, aged 44 years. Deeply regretted. The funeral leaves the Rechabite Hall, Ormondville at 1pm.

A shocking accident happened at Longburn on Saturday, by which a fine girl, about 14 years of age, Daisy AMNER, lost her life. She clambered on a truck while some shunting was going on and fell off, two wheels of the truck going over her. She was taken to the Wanganui hospital but died at 9am Sunday morning.

A fatal accident occured last night when Mrs GADSBY and Mrs COX were driving home from here. In going down Whenuakura Hill, the horse shied and went over the steep embankment. Mrs GADSBY was picked up insensible and died in a few minutes. Mrs COX was badly hurt but it is hoped not seriously.
