Yesterday afternoon Miss Cara ENGLEBRETSEN, daughter of E. ENGELBRETSEN, one of the original pioneers of Norsewood, was married to Axel MORTENSEN of Norsewood. At about 2pm, the Lutheran Church began to fill with sightseers and friends. Shortly after the marriage party drove up to the door and quite a murmur of admiration was heard when the bride who was very tastefully dressed in white nun's veiling, with the orthodox orange blossoms and veil, proceeded up the aisle on the arm of her father. The bridesmaids, Misses SOWRY, McGLASHAN & A. LAUVIG came next. The ceremony was very impressively conducted by Pastor SASS. On the conclusion of the service an adjournment was made to the Town Hall, where a regal spread was awaiting the guests, who had to sit down in relays. The cusine was in charge of Mdmes OLSEN & HENSEN and Misses PETERSON & ANDERSON. About 7pm the dancing commenced to music supplied by Mr W.H. BEALE, about 150 guests being present. Throughout the evening songs were contributed by Mdmes ESSEX & REDWARD, Misses SOWRY & LAUVIG and Messrs HAWKINS, PEDERSON, MITCHELL & REDWARD. The party broke up at about 3 am. Mr MITCHELL was MC. At Danevirke Police Court yesterday, John LIVINGSTONE, was charged on the information of his wife with pulling her hair and striking her on the back with his boot. He was also charged with being drunk, to which he pleaded guilty. To the other charge he pleaded not guilty. Rebecca LIVINGSTONE deposed that her husband came home late and knocked in the door with a maul. He asked her to warm some beer, she refused. He got the beer himself and then became very excited and threatened to get a knife and put it into her heart. He went away and came back at about quarter to three. He took hold of her by the hair and dragged her about and then took off his boot and struck her on the back. She could hardly breathe owing to the blow he gave her. Since she came to Danevirke this sort of thing had been going on and although she had borne it as long as possible she could stand it no longer, as she was afraid for her life. Her husband was right enough when sober, but he was often drunk. He gave her nothing for support. All she had, had, the last three months was 10 shillings from Mr MILLER, who had brought some firewood from her husband. She had five children, the eldest six years and the youngest eight months.
Constable RYAN deposed that Mrs LIVINGSTONE had come to the police station at about quarter to three that morning, she was more like a mad woman than anything else, owing to the treatment she had received from her husband. Constable RYAN found LIVINGSTONE lying in the corner of a paddock grinding his teeth like a madman. He became violent and threatened his wife. The constable was compelled to arrest him for the safety of the woman. The state of things in the house was deplorable. The children were all out of bed and in terror. The Justices, HENDERSON & CLAYTON sentenced the prisoner to one months hard labour and advised Mrs LIVINGSTONE to apply to the RM for a protection order

Death
SOWRY : On 26 Oct at the residence of Mr BERGERSEN, Palmerston North, Martha Matilda, wife of Joseph SOWRY of Woodville.

We regret to announce the death of Mrs SOWRY of Woodville. As the result of her recent exertions at a recent entertainment, the deceased lady caught a cold, being in a weak state of health, which settled on her lungs. She had gone with Mr SOWRY and some friends for a drive. On her arrival there she became so ill she had to be confined to bed and medical aid was called in. Her illness rapidly assumed a critical form and unconsciousness set in. Twice she rallied and gave hope of recovery, only, however to sink again and at 5 am on Sunday morning she expired at the early age of 38 years. Mrs SOWRY was a daughter of Mr MORTENSEN of Norsewood, had been married for eleven years, and leaves a family of four.

A Very Sad Fatality
Colonel HERRICK Killed
Abridged: A sad accident has resulted in the death of a well known and much respected gentleman, Colonel HERRICK, of Forest Gate.
Mr & Mrs GIBLIN, Miss HERRICK and Colonel HERRICK had left Danevirke on Tuesday morning for the Colonels property in the Weber district.
This morning Mr ELLINGHAM brought in the sad intelligence. From meagre particulars as are available, we learn that yesterday the party were out inthe neigbourhood of Waihi Falls at the back of Mr BOGLE's section. Colonel HERRICK was missed and a search revealed his body at the foot of the falls, which are some 80 feet in height. Mr R. HUGHES, found the body. Life was not then extinct and it was about one and a half hours afterwards that Colonel HERRICK breathed his last. C. BADDELEY left this morning to bring the body in and an inquest will be held this evening. Not the least distressing part of the affair is that Mrs HERRICK was to have joined her husband this evening and at the time of writing is in ignorance of the sad event that has deprived her and her family of a loving husband and father.

Minnie OLSEN in her examination atthe Ormondville School, obtained full marks for every subject

A wire was received at Ormondville on Saturday from Marton to say that Albert WEST ( generally known as Dick) son of William WEST, Ormondville , was killed by the fall of a tree. He was to have come home to spend the Christmas holidays today. His father and brother have gone through to try and make arrangements to bring him home to be buried. The deceased was a single man about 20 years of age.

Fatal Acident of Colonel HERRICK
We have not much to add to the particulars there adduced, but it is only right that a word of praise should be given to those men who brought the body out of the bush. We do not know their names or we would gladly publish them, but there were sixteen of them and they carried the body for nearly 18 miles before they met Mr BADDELEY in the trap. The body arrived in Danevirke just before 7pm on Saturday night. The body was prepared for the jury's view. As soon as the formalities were complied with, the corpse was placed in a shell and taking Mr J.J. BAKER with him, Mr BADDELEY drove off to Waipawa. The deceased gentleman was interred at Waipawa, yesterday at 2pm. The service being read by Rev Archdeacon WILLIAMS.
Inquest
On Saturday before the Coroner, Samuel JOHNSON, held on enquiry into the circumstances attendant upon the lamented death of Colonel HERRICK.
Jury : M. HENDERSON, f.C.W. BIERRE, J. BARGH, A. HAYWARD, J. HENDERSON, J.H. CLAYTON (F)
Evidence
Robert HUGHES : I was in the employ of Colonel HERRICK and Mr GIBLIN and was engaged in packing wire. I reside at Weber. I last saw him alive between 2 -3 on Friday 19 inst. He was then on top of the Waihi Falls. The Falls are in the Wellington Province, near Pukehau, on the south side of Colonel HERRICK's property. He saw the deceased fall into the water. I jumped in and pulled him out to the shore. Mrs GIBLIN came running across to help me and helped me to take him out of the water. Colonel HERRICK was still alive and Mr GIBLIN came up and gave him a little whisky or brandy. I then went for help.
Alfred GIBLIN - Station Manager and Sheep farmer residing at Gwavas
Jury returned the following verdict: Jasper Lucas HERRICK on 19th day of December 1890, met with an accidental death by falling over the Waihi Falls and not from any injury or violence done or committed to the said Jasper Lucas HERRICK, to the knowledge of the said jurors.
