William HALL - Charged on the information of his wife, Sarah, with failing to provide her with adequate means of support. informant told a long story of ill treatment culminating in seperation on the understanding that she should be paid 7s a week and asked for a larger allowance on the grounds that the defendant was worth about 2,000 pounds. The informant admitted that she owned half a acre with a house upon it. Postponed.
Robert MARTIN, member of the Salvation Army was charged with failing to support his wife. The information was laid by his son in law, Sydney Hezekiah JONES. Mrs MARTIN was partially blind and in other ways afflicted and could not look after herself. Jane JONES, daughter of the defendant deposed going to see her mother on Monday last and finding her unable to turn herself in bed, with neither food nor water. The witness had six brothers whose ages ranged from 16 - 27 but none of them did anything for their mother. On occassions, the defendant had taken food out of the house and had hidden it in the yard before going to his Salvation Army meetings as his wife was infirm and she could not go out for it. the defendant said he had supported his wife for 39 years, but that his wife and daughter were accustomed to spend his money in drink ................ more

A young man named DESMOND alias JOHNSON, a new arrival was drowned at Frasertown on Saturday. He had stripped off his clothes and was swimming across the river to fetch a canoe and when within 20 yds of the Pakowhai side he suddenly sank. It is supposed he was seized with cramp. The body has not yet been recovered. It is reported that the deceased was lately in WR BLYTHE's employ at Napier

A half caste lad, son of Archie LEWIS, residing at the heads, was found quite dead with the top of his head nearly blown off with a gun. The deed is supposed to have been done by accident by another half caste lad named RICHARDSON, whom the deceased was in company a short time before. The latter, terror struck has hidden himself and although a strict search has been made, he has not yet been found. An inquest was held on the body of LEWIS but was adjourned till the boy RICHARDSON could be produced to give evidence.

The death rate at the hospital is higher than usual this month. 3 males & 2 females having succumbed. The last death was that of a young man named SULLIVAN who came to Napier from Gore for the benefit of his health. He was so ill on arrival that he only lived 3 weeks. His body is to be forwarded by steamer for burial at Gore.

A terrible case of injuries from burning is now being treated in the Napier Hospital. The patient is a painter named GOLDSMITH who is subject to epileptic fits and who felll into the fire during one of those distressing attacks. Before he was discovered and rescued more tha one half of the mans face was destroyed and one of his fingers burned off. Should he survive his recovery will amount to a medical miracle.

The notorious Mary Alice RAY, who seems to pass her life in prison when not making herself a pest outside, was yesterday sent to gaol for a month with hard labor in default of paying a fine for being an inmate of a disorderly house. The keeper of the house was also sentenced to a months hard labor.
