Mr John HENN of the Napierpostal department has been gazetted registrar
of BDM's
Our Obituary column this morning contains a notice of the demise of Mr
R.D. MANEY, a very old settller in the Hawkes bay and well known from
one end of the district to the other. He was at one time a large landowner,
among the blocks held by him at different periods, being nearly the whole
of Meanee and part of Taradale, the Korokipo & Moteo runs and other
large areas in other parts of the province. A series of unfortunate reverses
during the past few years altered his position and his circumstances became
comparitively reduced. For the past ten days he had been suffering from
dysentary, which resulted yesterday in complete collapse and he died about
6pm yesterday evening.

A lamentable accident occurred at Hastings yesterday, resulting in the
death of a little boy, alexander SUTHERLAND, aged 4 years. The child with
some playmates was climbing up the wheel of a bullock dray standing in
the street. the driver not seeing the little fellow started the dray.
The deceased fll under the wheel, which passed over the upper part of
his body, killing him instantly

An inquest was held at the Occidental Hotel yesterday before G.A. PREECE,
Coroner and a jury of 13, of which Mr G. SCARFE was foreman, to determine
the cause of sudden death of the late Thomas SCYTHE
Deposed :
William TAYOR- Lodger at the home of Mr 7 Mrs SCYTHE. The three of them
had been playing cards when the deceased was taken with a twitching of
the nose and a difficulty breathing
Dr CARO performed the autopsy. The lungs were congested and the heart
much enlarged. The examination resulted in proof that the deceased he
died from valvular disease of the heart. Jury returned a verdict in accordance
with the medical evidence

Inquest at West Clive
The body appeared to be that of a man, 35 years of age who had been dead
for about a fortnight. No marks of violence to account for death and nothing
to lead to the identification of the body.
Verdict : Found drowned in Tuki Tuki river, there being no evidence to
show how the body came there.

Miss Auguste PEERSON of Ormondville who was recently charged with lunacy
and later discharged, left her home on Saturday morning and has not since

A man named HYLAND, from Meanee was yesterday received in to Napier Hospital
suffering from frost bitten feet. It is supposed that he laid out during
Monday night, which was bitterly cold. He was in a bad way when admitted
and perfectly powerless.

A most pitiful case of death from exposure to the present bad weather
has just occurred in Norsewood. A settlers wife named Mrs JACOBSEN, who
lived on a lonely section half a mile distant from any other house, went
out on Monday afternoon to look for a cow, leaving four very young children
in the house, with directions not to leave it until she returned, as she
would not be away long. The father works away from home, and only returns
occassionally. It was quite by chance that another settler, also looking
for cattle, happened to call at the house on Tuesday afternoon, and found
the poor little children in a state of the widest alarm at the protracted
absence of their mother. He immediately instituted a search party and
over two hundred people were in the bush on Tuesday night searching in
every direction. Yesterday morning the dead body of the unfortunate woman
was discovered only about six or seven chain from her home. She had evidently
been dead for some time. The event has created a profound sensation in
Norsewood, where the unfortunate woman was well known.
An inquest will be held on Thursday.

Doubts are entertined at Norsewood as to whether Mrs JACOBSEN ( whose
supposed death from exhaustion was the subject of a recnt coroners enquiry)
is really dead or only in a trance. The coroner has been communicated
with by telegram and he has furnished to the relatives, instructions how
to proceed with a view to resuscitation. Dr MIRBACH has also been despatched
to Norsewood. The affair has caused great excitement

An extraordinary occurence has happened. The coroner has just (7pm) received
a wire from the Registrar of Deaths &c at Norsewood requesting to
have a doctor sent at once as the friends of the late Mrs JACOBSEN refuse
to bury her, having noticed signs of life since the inquest. The coroner
has wired instructions how to act and has requested Dr MIRBACH to proceed

PALMER : At Waipukurau on Wed 12 Aug, James Charles, second son of John
PALMER, aged 22 years. The funeral will take place on Sunday at 2.30pm
An accident occurred at HOLT's timber yard on Wednesday, not considered
at the time serious, but that unfortunately resulted fatally yesterday.
A youth named Stephen DRYDEN, engaged in shifting timber from the stacks
in the yard to the mill, found it difficult to remove a plank that had
got jammed. He endeavoured to lift the plank clear by giving it a jerk,
but in doing so unfortunately ruptured himself internally. He did not
consider himself seriously injured, although he experienced pain sufficient
to cause him to cease work. He was assisted to the Caledonian hotel, where
he was at once attended by dr DE LISLE and later Dr KEYWORTH, both doctors
pronouncing the case one of serious rupture. The injured youth suffered
great pain during the first part of the time after the accident, but became
unconscious before his death, which took place yesterday. Deceased was
about 19 years of age at the time of his death, and a very promising young
man

The divorce case : WATSON & WATSON v GILLESPIE, co -respondent was
heard. The petitioner, John WATSON asked for a dissolution on the grounds
of her adultery. The petitioner is a shepherd living near Oamaru and GILLESPIE
was working with him, but being suspected, he was discharged. Some time
later Mrs WATSON left her husband and was living in a hotel at Lyttelton
with the co-respondent. A decree was granted. Both the respondent and
the co-respondent are now living in Napier
