Hawke's Bay Hospital, to Emma Louisa, eldest daughter of Mr GRUCHY,
Shakespeare Road, Napier. On Sunday afternoon, a small boy four years old, son
of J B ILLINGWORTH, of Clive, was drowned in the Ngaruroa river. The
boy was playing with his two little sisters at the back of their residence
which abuts on the river bank. The girls, the eldest of whom is only
five years of age, went into their houses for tea, and when asked about
their brother they said he was in the next neighbour's house. Mr ILLINGWORTH
went for the child but could not find him. A search was instituted,
and the boy's footsteps traced to the edge of the river, while his hat
was seen floating on the water. The river was dragged, and the body
recovered close to the bank. Resident Magistrates Court on Saturday last, before Capt PREECE R.M., two cases of drunkenness weer disposed of. The delinquents, who were named McKENZIE and McLEOD, pleaded guilty. Fined 1 pound and costs with the alternative of 48 hours in gaol. Reports of the sports and recreation ground, at Petane, and at Waipukurau will be found on the fourth page. (full page of results.) New Year was ushered in immediately after 12 o'clock on Sunday night by the Artillery and Rifle bands. The much admired new instruments of the Band were manaufactured by Mr J HIGHAM, of Manchester. Captain PREECE, R.M., proceeded North by the Steamer on Sunday for the purpose of holding sittings at Te Awanui in his capacity of Resident Magistrate for the district of Waiapu. He would land at the East Capt yesterday evening, hold Court at Te Awanui today and tomorrow, and then ride back overland to Gisborne (about 90 miles) so to catch the steamer for Napier, leaving there on Friday evening next, arriving here again on Saturday morning.

A kauri tree lately cut on the Tairua land of the Auckland Sash and Door Companay measured 42 feet in girth and 70 feet from the ground to the first branch. It contained about 40,,, feet of timber. A romantic sequel to an outrage committed, last year from Limerick. Miss ELLAND, a young and beautiful lady, possessing a large property, was fired at as she was driving along the high road, and behaved with great courage. She was placed under the protection of two constables, and one of them she has now married. The Agent-General has received a large number of applications
for the professorial chairs of the Auckland College. For classics and
English, 87; for mathematics, 61; for chemistry, 43; and for natural
science, 23; For the Head master-ship of the Waitaki High School, 700
applications were made for forms, and out of these 230 were returned
filled up in due form. Final decision expected in November. General Local News. was today found floating outside Raglan harbour. H J SMITH for many years a commercial traveller for Messrs A CLARK and Sons warehousemen, poisoned himself at his residence at North Shore yesterday. He had been to th races with his wife and seemed in good health. It is not known whether it is a case of suicide, or whether he had taken an overdose of the drug (two empty bottles of chloral by his side). No cause is known for the event. of seven days' imprisonment for wilful disobedience of lawful commands,

commands of the master of the vessel.-Sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment
with hard labor, and forfeit pay out of his wages the sum of 19s for costs
and expenses. A special train will leave Hastings for Napier next Monday
and Thursday evenings to enable the inhabitants to hear Archibald FORBES' An advertiser wants to purchase a bullock team and dray
complete. George Alban KING, of Woodville, has filed in the Supreme
Court a declaration of his inability to meet his creditors. Shovel men

with the Taradale District school was held on Wednesday at Mr TIFFEN's

just now, parents and scholars mustered in great force. The prizes were
presented by the very Rev E H GRANGER, consisted of a large number of
handsomely bound books. Every child who successfully passed examination

We notice from the Sydney exchanges that Mr Alfred Bowden MARTIN, who was formerly in the Public Works Department on the Napier Railway, was accidentally drowned in the Tweed river in the Darling district by the upsetting of a boat on Christmas Day last. On Monday eighteen constables of the A.C., with Sergt. SHEPHERD, landed here en route for the North, where they will be employed on the roads. Sergt BROWN assumed command of the party, which immediately marched for Petane. Four of the men will be stationed at Tarawera, four at Opepe, and two at Taupo. Mr BOLD yesterday maid final arrangements for opening
the telegrapah stations at Kaikora and Ormondville-the latter which will
be worked by telephone. The poasts were erected and wires stretched at
Kaikora eighteen months ago, but some petty differences between the Telegraph
and Public Works Departments has caused the conferring of this public

Mr G METARD, a resident of Palmerston North, recently went home to France to claim some money. To prove his identity he had to surrender himself to the military authorities and, it appeared that he had left France at a time when he should have joined the Army, he received 24 hours notice to join the 28th Regiment, where he should have served his time. In a letter to a friend in the Manawatu, Mr METARD says that "being a soldier in Paris is not so pleasant as it was in Captain LETHBRIDGE's company in Feilding."

Inquest touching death of Luke MADDIGAN. Deceased was working on Thursday with a threshing machine on MessrsGILBERTSON and DICKSON's Meanee, and at mid day was seized with pains in his stomach. His employers sent him home to Taradale in a buggy, and in passing the Mission Station he spoke to Sister Mary Joseph, who gave him some medicine. On reaching home Mrs MADDIGAN, applied hot flannels to his stomach, which seemed to ease him a little. About 8 o'clock in the morning he got out of bed to have some gruel, and was sitting on a sofa, when he suddenly called out and fell forward dead.
