Friday Wanganui
John WILSON, farm laborer, committed suicide this afternoon, by drinking arsenic from a bottle at CRAIG's farm. He was brought to the Wanganui Hospital and died in ten minutes after admission. Before taking the poison Wilson threatened Mrs CRAIG and family with a revolver, and is believed to have been insane.

Owing WILBERFORCE having met with an accident he has been scratched for all engagements at the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club.
By a casting vote of the chairman last night the Mayor's salary was increased from 200 pounds to 300.
A writ for 100 pounds was served on Captain MOSEY of the barque Mercia, at the instance of Messrs MURRAY, ROBERTS and Co., who allege that he has refused to give proper bills of lading on account of certain bales of wool which have been shipped to London on board his vessel.
Members of City Council formed themselves into a committee for a suitable reception to Sir Wm JERVOIS on his arrival here in a fortnight.
At Carterton bush fires are raging and the place is full of smoke. There is a large fire on the north side of the Belvidere road, near the railway line.

Christchurch.
Applications from shareholders in the Frozen Meat Company for freight in the British King, the first of the Shipping Cos direct steamers, amounted to 19,950 sheep, about double as many as there is space for in the vessel.
No trace of poison could be found about the house of William WALSH, who was found in a dying state on Wednesday night. The inquest was adjourned to enable the stomach to be analysed. The deceased had purchased some medicine in town in the shape of powders and pills, which he took home with him, and they are to be analysed.

Ashburton and Timaru.
Harvest prospects are magnificent, and are exceeding the most sanguine expectations. There is scarcity of labor and the efforts made to obtain it in Dunedin and Christchurch have proved quite successful.

Mr Fred McCABE has been suffering from cold, and has been unable to perform for two nights.

A mason's labourer named AITKEN, employed at the new high school buildings met with his death somewhat peculiarly today.
He fell on a stone wall along which he was walking, and when picked up was found to have broken his neck.

A bushman, whose name has not transpired, was drowned at Tairoa while bathing New Year's Day.

A well known character named BURKE has been fined 5 pounds and costs at the Police Court for a breach of the Pawnbrokers Act. Police have been watching for some time, but was unable to be caught. Detective WALKER at last tripped him.

Mr R J DeLIAS, the well-known theatrical speculator is dead.

Wanganui-Saturday.
At the inquest on the body of John WILSON, today, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned, one out of thirteen jurymen dissenting. The evidence showed that WILSON took a pound of arsenic, and that the cause was a love affair.

The bush fires at Carterton have been extinguished without any serious damage having being done.

A distressing accident occurred at Manutahai on Saturday. A boy named KING, who was bathing in a dam, got out of his depth, and his father went to save him, and both were drowned. The bodies were subsequently recovered.

Wellington-Monday.Mr H WRIGHT, has been elected Secretary of the Wellington Meat Export Co. GEAR's Butchering Co have contracted for the slaughtering until yards have been erected.
Blenheim-Monday.
An infant, aged 18 months, a son of a laborer named WGITHING, fell into the Iopawa river this morning, and was drowned. The body has not been recovered.

BURNIP, licensee of Middleton's Hotel, Kaiapoi, was today charged with supplying James KINLAY, against whom a prohibition order has been issued.BURNIP was fined 10 pounds, with the alternative of one month's imprisonment; the conviction to be endorsed on his license. J GRIFFITH's, a tradesman, on a similar charge of supplying John ARMSTRONG, was fined 5 pounds or in default 14 days imprisonment.

The Magistrate recommended an amendment of the Act with a view of prohibition orders being advertised in the newspapers.

man named Robert FULLER, an inmate of the Old Men's Home, was arrested here today on a charge of criminally assaulting a girl 14 years old.

Timaru-Monday-The
skeleton of aman was found on the sea beach yesterday. It is supposed to be the remains of one of the three men who lost their lives at the time of the wrecks on May 14 last.
A man named INNES was arrested at Mr LAVELL's station this afternoon on charge of setting fire to a stack of grain on Mr LEVELL's estate valued at 150 pounds.

Dunedin,
An inquest was held on the body of J A RODGERS, formerly station master at Burnside, who diedfrom an overdose of chloral under circumstances leading to the suspicion of suicide. The jury returned an open verdict. The coroner censured the chemist, who had supplied the deceased regularly with chloral without a prescription from a medical man.

A number of the coal miners at the Kawa Kawa coal mine have gone gum hunting.

Mr H Morton WILLIAMS, engineer forthe Kaihu railway, has finished plans for the first section. He anticipates finishing the survey and plans complete in three months.

Mr SHEEHAN will shortly take up his permanent residence in Napier. He is obligesd to pay another short visit to Cambridge, to conclude certain matters there, on hi return he will settle here.

An inquest was held last Wednesday at the Makatoku Hotel touching the death of August PETERSEN, who was killed on the 19th
inst., while working on the Manga-te-Wainui Bridge. The evidence showed that the fatality was purely accidental with no blame attached to anyone. The jury accordingly returned a verdict of accidental death.

Captain PREECE, R M and Major SCULLY went to Waipukurau yesterday to interview a meeting of natives interested in the block of bush country, part of which is leased to Messrs WILDING and BUL, and about the ownership of which there is a dispute.

Havelock- A Large number of ratepayers of the Havelock Highway Council met in the mechanics' Institute on Friday evening, to express an opinion on abolishing Road Boards.
Mr T GILPIN convened the meeting.
Mr J BOYLE spoke in favor of the Road Board system. Mr J C TAYLOR and Mr WATSON expressed similar views. Mr W A COUPER(Representative of the District County Council) also testified as to usefulness of Road Boards.
The following resolution was passed without a dissentient: "That the opinion of the Havelock district it would be very injudicious to abolish
Road Boards."

Clive. Ratepayers also met with Mr SUTTON in Chair. Mr LEYLAND moved that Road Boards should not be absolved. Mr McPHERSON, Mr HOLLIS, and Mr ORR supported the motion, which was then carried. Bits and Pieces around the District.

Marriage
TUKE-TIFFEN St John's Church was filled almost to capacity yesterday to witness the marriage of the Rev C L TUKE to Miss M E TIFFEN, eldest daughter of Mr F J TIFFEN, of Elms Hill and Clive Square. The marriage service was conducted by the Rev De Bert HOVELL, assisted by the Rev H St HILL. The bridesmaids were Miss Ida TIFFEN, Miss E TUKE, Miss CHAPMAN, Miss WIGINTON, Miss W TIFFEN, and Miss WARREN. The bridegrooms' best man was the rev H MacLEAN.
The bride was dressed in light grey silk, beautifully trimmed with lace and ornamented with orange blossoms. Mr BROWN presided at the organ, and played very effectively the processional march "Aux Flambeaux" on the bride entering the Church, and the "Wedding March" on the departure of the newly married couple.

A public meeting is to be held in St John's school-room this evening to consider the question of starting a branch of the Young Men's Christian Association.

Local A magical and sleight-of-hand performance was given last evening at the Theatre Royal by Ben ALLAH.At the conclusion of the performance a goodly number of presents were distributed, and a gift of a guinea was entrusted to Sergeant BURTENSHAW for the Napier Hospital.

Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Captain PREECE, R.M., Frederick QUINTEL, a seaman belonging to the barque Coromandel, who only came out of gaol on Wednesday after serving a sentence of seven days' imprisonment for wilful disobedience of lawful commands, again brought up by Captain HENDRY for wilful disobedience to the lawful commands of the master of the vessel.-Sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment with hard labor, and forfeit pay out of his wages the sum of 19s for costs and expenses.

Ralph CRAWFORD-forgery-purporting to be signed by Harry A LAMBERT. Remanded.
Augustus DURNET Walter WINSOR, two lads charged with maliciously damaging a tree in the Government grounds, damaging branches and doing injury to the amount of one shilling. Both boys pleaded not guilty, but were convicted on the evidence given and were find each the sume of one pound 10s, with costs 11s divided, or in default seven days imprisonment with hard labor. The fines were paid forthwith.

Civil Cases-Witness in the case of KENNEDY V FRAZER. A case now pending at R M Court Rangitikei (Bulls).

The annual Picnic and distribution of prizes in connection with the Taradale District school was held on Wednesday at Mr TIFFEN's plantation, and notwithstanding that harvesting operations are very brisk just now, parents and scholars mustered in great force. The prizes were presented by the very Rev E H GRANGER, consisted of a large number of handsomely bound books. Every child who successfully passed examination obtained a prize.

were given by Messrs GRANGER, WATERHOUSE and BENNETT who complimented teachers and scholars on the remarkable achievements of the pupils.

Mrs BEATTY, the owner of the theatre, writes to the papers flatly contradicting the statement made at the meeting of the City Council
last evening which caused that body to threaten to cancel the theatre license.

The case of PAXTON v STEAD was concluded at the Supreme Court today. Nearly the whole day was occupied by the evidence of G G STEAD in defence. C W TURNER also called as well as PAXTON's partner, ROBERTS.

Forgery- Ralph CRAWFORD, on remand- upon application of the Sergeant BURTENSHAW until Monday next.

Drunkenness
John BURK, on bail, failed to appear when called, and his recognisance of 20s was estreated.

Drunk in a Railway carriage Henare KUTU, pleaded guilty to this offence. Fined 10s and costs 7s, with the alternative of three days' imprisonment with hard labor.

Assaulting a Constable Same person as above- further convicted of assault of a constable at Farndon railway station. Fined 1 pound and costs 7s, or in default of payment seven days' imprisonment with hard labor. Both the fines were paid.

Breach of the Licensing Act, 1881.
Edward ASHTON, by his solicitor Mr LEES, pleaded guilty to a charge that he, being a licensed publican, did fail to keep the lamp affixed over the door of his licensed premises. In palliation of the offence it was stated that the light had gone out through some fault in the gas meter, which had since been rectified. A fine of 5s was inflicted with costs 7s.

There were only two competitors for the scholarship offered by the Board of Education-value 20 Pounds per annum and tenable for 2 years. This was gained by Harold LARGE, one of our scholars.
The prizes offered yearly by Captain W R RUSSELL for mending, darning &c, were awarded to Mary MILLER, Minnie SPRUGGS, and Susan BUNTING.

The County Council Election.

There will be no lack of candidates for the seat in the County Council vacated by Mr BENNETT.
The Returning Officer notifies that four have been nominated-
Captain RUSSELL and Messrs W SHRIMPTON, M MILNE and P DOLBEL. All three are good men, any one of whom would make an excellent successor to Mr BENNETT.
We believe the Captain RUSSELL would prove at once the most active member and the one most conversant with the requirements of the county and of the provisions of the law. Whether our opinions are those of the majority of ratepayers in the Puketapu Riding will, however be demonstrated on Wednesday week, when the poll will be taken in the Puketapu school room.

We notice from the Sydney exchanges that Mr Alfred Bowden MARTIN, who was formerly in the Public Works Department on the Napier Railway, was accidentally drowned in the Tweed river in the Darling district by the upsetting of a boat on Christmas Day last.

On Monday eighteen constables of the A.C., with Sergt. SHEPHERD, landed here en route for the North, where they will be employed on the roads. Sergt BROWN assumed command of the party, which immediately marched for Petane. Four of the men will be stationed at Tarawera, four at Opepe, and two at Taupo.

Mr BOLD yesterday maid final arrangements for opening the telegrapah stations at Kaikora and Ormondville-the latter which will be worked by telephone. The poasts were erected and wires stretched at Kaikora eighteen months ago, but some petty differences between the Telegraph and Public Works Departments has caused the conferring of this public boon to be delayed for that time.

Mr J ABBOTT of Wanganui arrived here from Napier with 50 rams for the Lincoln flock of the Hon H R RUSSELL.

Mr G METARD, a resident of Palmerston North, recently went home to France to claim some money. To prove his identity he had to surrender himself to the military authorities and, it appeared that he had left France at a time when he should have joined the Army, he received 24 hours notice to join the 28th Regiment, where he should have served his time. In a letter to a friend in the Manawatu, Mr METARD says that "being a soldier in Paris is not so pleasant as it was in Captain LETHBRIDGE's company in Feilding."

Local.
Yesterday afternoon a little boy named Willie JOHNSON, aged 5 years, was climbing a cliff opposite Mr HERON's, Carlyle St, when he fell from a considerable height, and was picked up insensible. Dr deLISLE was quickly on the spot, and finding one leg badly fractured and other injuries, sent him at once to the hospital, where he was attended to by Dr MENZIES.

The patients now in the hospital number 33, of whom 9 are females. No fewer than 48 males and 11 females were admitted last month, and 22 males and 2 females were discharged. Two males died.

Reports of yesterday's meetings of the Napier Gas Co and the Waipawa County Council will be found on the fourth page.

Excitement over the exhibition of several diamonds and garnets stated to have been found four miles from Auckland by Mr SHAKESPEARE. Mr COURTNEY and other experts are of the opinion that the specimens are from the Kimberley diamonds field South Africa, but Mr SHAKESPEARE denies this. He says he has sent some to England.

Supreme Court today in the case of Samuel RAMUS v James BUCKLAND- an action arising from a promissory note, used for a betting transaction with WESTON the bookmaker. Judge GILLIES summed up in favor of the plaintiff, but the jury gave a verdict on the issued in favor of the defendant Disputed claim for 600 pounds between the Ponsonby Ward(just added to the city) and the Auckland borough. Mr FITZGERALD, the Auditor General has given his award in favor of Ponsonby.

A meeting of the St John's Ladies Work Society will this week be held on Friday afternoon instead of Thursday.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Captain PREECE R M, a Maori lad, who gave the name of Ramahia TEAMAHATA, was charged on the information of Constable LEITH with the larceny of a 5 pound note. Through his lawyer, Mr LEE, he pleaded not guilty, and was remanded.

A very serious accident occurred at the Apit, yesterday morning to Mrs MANSFIELD, the wife of a fisherman. She was boiling
some tar for her husband's nets, when by some means the port containing the tar got upset, and a considerable portion fell over Mrs MANSFIELD, igniting her cloths besides scalding her. She has sustained some fearful burns about the legs. As soon as possible she was conveyed to the hospital, where she was attended by Dr deLISLE. The boiling tar set fire to the flooring of the cottage, and to one of the side walls, and the firebell having been rung, the Spit Brigade turned out, and very quickly extinguished the flames.

Mr BENNTT- prior to his departure for England- the date for his farewell has been fixed for Thursday, the 22nd instant.

His Worship the Mayor yesterday received from Captain HUME, Inspector of Prisons, an intimation that the petition for the release of Frederick RENDLE had been laid before the Governor, after investigating the facts.

A young girl named AVISON, about 14 years of age, daughter of Mr J AVISON, Waipawa, met with a severe accident onTuesday. She was riding a horse, bare-backed, endeavouring to run down another horse, when her one bolted and threw her off, kicking her as she fell. When she was picked up it was found that she had sustained a severed compound fracture of the leg, the bones almost protruding. Drs TODD and
REED were called in, and the injured girl is now progressing favourably towards recovery.

The Hon Mr ROLESTON and family and M CESARE, the Maltese emigration agent, left today, for a tour in the northern settlements.

At the inquest on the bodies of George WHITE and Mary 0'NEAL, who were burnt to death at the Wakefield street fire. It came out in evidence that the woman had been enticed away from her husband in Melbourne, and that her husband's name is HODGES. A verdict
of accidental death was returned and that the cause of the fire was a defectively constructed hearth.

At an inquest today on the body of George RHODES, builder, an open verdict of found drowned was returned.

The New Zealand Timber Company has declared a dividend of 15 per cent, and carried 2000 pounds to the reserve fund, now standing at 120,000 pounds.

Dr PHILSON was today presented by the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens with an address and a gold watch of the value of 100 pounds, and a purse of 220 sovereigns on his retirement from the Auckland Hospital. A silver card-case was also presented to Mrs PHILSON.

CRAIG-On February 10th, Mrs Jane Kirk CRAIG aged 75.
The funeral will leave her late residence in Craven-Street at 3 o'clock this Monday after noon.

Another very old resident of Napier passed away on Saturday night, in the person of Mrs Jane Kirk CRAIG. It is nearly thirty years since Mrs CRAIG came to Napier with her family, and two of her daughters-Mrs T K NEWTON and Mrs GARRY-are still with us. Mrs CRAIG was somewhat suddenly ill on Saturday afternoon, and died within a few hours.

A man named Theo JEFFRIES was found unconscious on the road near Rangiora. It appears he was riding a spirited horse and was thrown. He was brought to the hospitalsuffering from concussion of the brain.

Oamaru.
Susan MADDEN has been committed for trial for attempting to commit suicide at her husband's grave.

The island between the two parts of the Upper Waitaki bridge has been partially washed away and traffic is suspended. The Hakatarema valley is therefore shut off from traffic communication with the railway line, and unless the bridge is speedily repaired the grain growers in that localaity will not be able to reach a market except at great expense.

The inquest on the fire at the Exchange Hotel, Havelock, resulted in an open verdict, the evidence failing to show any cause for the fire.

The Rev David SIDEY was a passenger by the Arawata for Auckland on Saturday to attend the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.
The Rev W NICHOL, the other delegate from the local Presbytery, proceeds to Auckland by the Southern Cross on Saturday.

The Rev William NICHOL, of Havelock, has had presented to him a very handsome buggy, built by Mr FORSTER, the purchase money for which was obtained by the united subscriptions of the parishioners, in the various districts of his parish. It must be gratifying to the Rev gentleman to receive a mark of the esteem he is held in and a recognition of his laborious services.

The contract for the new Colonial Bank, on the site of Messrs PRICE and Co's old establishment, is being rapidly carried out by Messrs GLENDINNING and GRIFFEN. When finished the bank will be an ornament for the town, the frontages of Hastings and Browning Sts being highly ornamental.

Mr T S LAWRY (says the Auckland Herald) who went home to study medicines at Edinburgh University thus writes to a friend:- "There are twenty or twenty-one students from New Zealand here. With one or perhaps two exceptions, they are steady, fairly diligent men. In physique they are considerably above the average. I think the two biggest men in the University are New Zealanders. One of them a Christchurch man, has been a champion runner in the 200 yards flat race for several years. In this mind we make a fair show too. A Taranaki man in ROBERTSON's year, named KING, came out at the top of his year in zoology, thus securing a gold medal, and last year he was bracketed third in anatomy. MOORHOUSE also carried off a medal (5th or 6th) last summer."

Lewis Basil SPENCER- a year and eleven months of age. Sad accident at Waipawa-mate on Sunday, resulting in the death by drowning of a young son of Mr W SPENCER, fellmonger.

Serious Accident at Norsewood last Saturday afternoon.
Mr THOMPSON, the master of the Norsewood School, was in the act of mounting his horse, just outside
his residence, when the animal plunged and threw Mr THOMPSON heavily tothe ground, his head coming into contact with a tree stump, which inflicteda nasty wound. Dr MENZIES, who is at present on holiday, in the neighbourhoodof Norsewood, was at once sent for, and pronounced injuries to be veryserious. It is expected that Mr THOMPSON will be confined to his bed forsome weeks.

The law makes nice distinctions. Yesterday Mr Bartlett STEVENS, Secretary and Engineer to the Harbor Board, and Mr GIFFORD, member of the Spit Fire Brigade were both summoned to the District Court Jury.
Mr SAUNDERS asked to be excused because of his duties to the Harbor Board and when summoned failed to answer to his name, but evidence being given to show that he was ill, no penalty was imposed. His Honor said that he could not grant exemption from service, this was no excuse in law.

Mr GIFFORD asked to be excused because he was a member of the Fire Brigade-he was excused.

Mr James HOWARD, Lambertford, Takapau, has for sale wethers and crossbred ewes.

John Joseph BROWNE application notified to the Supreme Court on Monday next for a declaration of complete execution of the deed of arrangement.

At the Education Board Meeting:
Uncertificated Teachers.
Letter read from the Matawhero
Committee (Poverty Bay, recommending that a certificated teacher be employed at this school.
In reply the Inspector stated that the present master Mr BOLTON, had tried three times to get his examination, but had always failed.
The average attendance was only 70, but it should be more like 140.

The Inspector stated there were two other schools in a similar position, Frasertown and Meanee. The masters of these schools were appointed on condition that they passed their certification certificates in January, but neither had presented himself. Mr FRASER of Frasertown, had given no reason for his failure, Mr MABBETT of Meanee, had stated that he was not well enough at
the time, and had been unable to prepare himself. Both masters did good work, except on the training of pupil teachers.
The Board decided that the masters of both schools, having failed to carry out conditions of appointment, receive three months notice.

10pounds 4s for balance of wages due. Mr LEE for plaintiff and Mr LASCELLES for defendant. Plaintiff was in the employee of LAWTON, but left without giving notice on account of the alleged noise and uproar in LAWTON's house.
The defendant stated that plaintiff was a half yearly servant, but this was denied.

Before leaving Napier Mr HAYWARD, of Messrs TOMLINSON and HAYWARD, designed some great improvements in sheep dipping baths, one being an automatic arrangement for tipping the sheep into the bath. Mr HAYWARD claims that the sheep do not injure each other, as by jumping from the board they usually used, and so jamming themselves, in his design the previous sheep is well out of the way before the next one arrives.

Local. Messrs MURRAY ROBERTS, and Co, have received advice from Messrs REID and GRAY that they took first prize at the Taieri Agricultural Society's contest for the best reaper and twine binder, beating WOOD's, HORNSBY's, and HOWARD's easily, finishing in less time, cut best, tied best, and made much the best and firmest sheaf.

Mr W HODGSON will this evening become the recipient of a very handsome illuminated address, as well as a watch and pendant, subscribed for by over 60 members of the working Men's Club, in recognition of his services.

At the Waipawa
Police Court on Wednesday, before Messrs JOHNSTON and HERRICK, J.P's, James O'DONNELL was charged, on information of Rees WATKINS, railway guard. Two boys attempted to enter the afternoon train from Waipawa to Napier while it was in motion. One boy got on safely, but the other had a very narrow escape falling between the train and the platform. A fine of 1pound and costs was imposed.

Denis O'CALLAGHAN was charged, on the information of Honi WIRIMU, with abusive language. The bench dismissed the case, each
party paying its share of the costs.

The Kentish Express of a recent date contains the following:- We are pleased to find that the merits of our country breed of sheep continue to attract the breeders in New Zealand.
Mr Robert COBB, son of Mr Thomas COBB, of Ivychurch, one of the Lords of Romney Marsh, has recently made an expedition from Foxton, Wellington, New Zealand, for the purpose of selecting purebred sheep. We may say that a finer collection of thirty-five ram and ewe tegs than those he is now preparing for shipment by the Montrose, leaving London on the 30th inst., it would be difficult to find. They include the ram for which the first prize was awarded at the great county show at Tunbridge Wells last month, and other splendid sheep from the well known and highly reputed flocks of Mr Thomas COBB, Mr J J GODWIN, Mr T GILES, Mr H RIGDEN, and the late Mr T FINN.

THE BOROUGH FINANCES.

Mr H H WALL has disposed of his watchmakaing and jewellery business to Mr P F COLLEDGE. Mr WALL we understand intends continuing to live in Napier, although he will probably take a trip in a few month's time.

There were only five candidates for the three licensing committees for the Borough of Napier. The following are the names:- Dr SPENCER, and Messrs J D ORMOND, J H COLEMAN, R HARDING, R PRICE. Mr Robert PRICE is the only new member, and he takes the place of Mr J A SMITH, who was ineligible for re-election in consequence of being appointed an inspector of lunatic asylums.

Inquest touching death of Luke MADDIGAN.

Deceased was working on Thursday with a threshing machine on MessrsGILBERTSON and DICKSON's Meanee, and at mid day was seized with pains in his stomach. His employers sent him home to Taradale in a buggy, and in passing the Mission Station he spoke to Sister Mary Joseph, who gave him some medicine. On reaching home Mrs MADDIGAN, applied hot flannels to his stomach, which seemed to ease him a little. About 8 o'clock in the morning he got out of bed to have some gruel, and was sitting on a sofa, when he suddenly called out and fell forward dead. The jury returned a verdict that death had resulted from natural causes.

praises the Australian Press has never tired of sounding for the past eighteen months, will introduce himself to a Napier audience on Monday evening. He is a variety performer, ventriloquist and mimic without equal.

Russell.
Two clerks in the employ of the Union Steamship Company's officer at Russell were drowned on Saturday evening through the capsizing of a boat while out for a pleasure sail. The names are G BAYLEY and G S SANKINS. The latter was only 18 years of age, and his life was insured in the government office of 500 pounds. A seaman named ANDERSON, who was also in the boat, was rescued in an exhausted condition.

A rather bad case of sunstroke occurred today to a man named John Thomas KIELE.
The effect was to render him violent and maniacal.

Christchurch. Monday.
There are 33 students at the Lincoln Agricultural school.-15 from Canterbury, 5 from Auckland, 2 from Nelson, 2 from Invercargill, 1 from Lawrence, 2 from Napier, 3 from Gisborne, 1 from Victoria, 1 from Dunedin, and 1 from Wellington.

The fixing of the electric light for Lyttelton harbor began today. Sixteen Brush lights, each of 2000 candles are to be erected.

Mr George GOULD has given to the Art Gallery of the Museum the picture "Still Life" by ELLIOTT, and the statue "Maori Warriors' by BEERE, which were shown in the Art Exhibition there.

Timaru-Monday.
A man named David Mc NAIN, while harnessing his horses this morning, was kicked in the stomach, and before he could recover himself had his thigh bone kicked broken by a second kick from the same horse. He was conveyed to hospital.
Dunedin-Monday.
The following amounts were paid over to owners of horses tonight. Hon G McLEAN, Hon ROBINSON, HORSFALL, STEPHENSON, BATE, MASON and VALLANCE, STEAD, O"BRIEN, HUNGERFORD, PROUDFOOT, DODSON.

At the city Court today in the action CATES V the Otago Harbor Board. Damages to the barque Motley by collision with the ship Philomene, the Magistrate held that Pilot KELLY, in bringing up the barque, had shown want of care amounting to negligence. The damage occasioned was entirely through his fault.

John JAMES charged with assault at Hastings upon John TUCK.-Case adjourned to allow an additional witness for complainant to be brought forward. They had found another man who saw the assault and who was present to give evidence and he was-James WYATT,
butcher deposed.
Thomas HORNE was called but did not appear.
Constable LEITCH gave evident.
The Court held that assault had been committed, but not one calling for a severe penalty. A fine of 2p would be inflicted, defendant
to pay costs of 2p 14s.

John MADDEN-abusive language towards George BENJAMIN

John CHRISTY, licensee of the Shakespeare Hotel-charged with assaulting William NEENAN, carpenter and joiner, arrived in Napier Saturday week and with a man named PURCELL went to Spit in a cab.
Jacob BELLE-Captain of the "Frank Guy," deposed. After being a witness he told Constable HARVEY what he had seen. Sergeant BURTENSHAW deposed.

By Mr LASCELLES-for complainant:- "When witness left three men named MORRISON, SEYMOUR and RILEY were also present, and Mr WADDELL just then came up. Witness did not call upon Mr KENNEDY, his next door neighbour but Mr KENNEDY called upon him." He then gave an account of the proceedings.
