A new license by W.F. STEVENS for the Beaconsfield Hotel, recently removed
from Kopua to Makatoku and situated near the railway station was refused.
The granting of a license for this house has been a much vexed question
for months past. It is very certain that the inhabitants do not require
any more than one licensed house, but at the same time it would be an
unqualified boon to travellers, many of whom, especially ladies, object
to travelling more than a mile on a dark bush road before they can find
a resting place for the night.
