Cruel assault by husband at Kaikora last Thursday Evening by a man named RUSSELL a shepherd, who had returned from Kopua sports evening. Afterwards an altercation took place and RUSSELL TOOK TO HIS WIFE WITH A HEAVY RIDING WHIP. Two neighbours Messrs APPLETT and COOMBES heard screams and they carried her off in a fainting condition. She was so badly injured as to required services of Dr.TOD.

Resident Magistrate's court three inebriates fined plus Thomas COOK. Mary Ann FARRELL,Annie CUNNINGHAM,Miss BUTWELL,re charges of having and being in a house of ill repute, a similar charge laid against Margaret CLARK, as her address was unknown by the police a summons was not delivered.

We are requesterd to state that the Henry MITCHELL charged with the larceny of a silver watch and hair gold chain, and committed for trial on Wednesday last, is not Henry MITCHELL, dairyman of Havelock, who was the principal witiness in the case heard against Fergus CLEARY for insulting language.

A paragraph appeared in the Jewish Chronicle of Oct 31st " on the 16th Sir Julius VOGEL, one of the Conservative candidates for the representation of Falmouth, delivered an interesting speech. Replying to personal matters, Sir JULIUS said that many attacks he took as compliments, as it showed that his opponents had some fear of his being successful. One imputation was against his religion, but he would not say that not for the sake of twenty elections would he disown his religion. The return of offences at the Napier Station of the New Zealand Constabulary shows a large diminution in the total number of cases reported and persons apprehended in the year 1879 as compared with the year 1878.. The decrease is chiefly in the cases of drunkenness, in which there were 411 in 188878, and only 277 in 1879. Vagrancy is the next, the numbers being 69 in 18778, and 25 in 1879. Of breaches of municipal bye-laws there were 71 cases in 187878 and 47 in 1879. Assaults on the Police, 20 in 1878, and 6, in 1879. With regard to other offences the return is not so favourable, common assaults, malicious injru, larceny,burglary, &c., showing each an increase. The total number of persons apprehended in 1878 was 890, and in 1879 the number was 833.

While KERIKA had been in jail awaiting trial, his wife had been given to another man and was now in child. Found guilty. 1 months imprisonment with hard labour.

Resident Court. John M'DONALD & Gent ORMOND - pleaded guilty to riding furiosly down Carlyle st and jnocking the two women down. They had been drinking at the time. Fined 40 shillings each with costs.

Constable Joseph Walter STRUDWICK - charged with assaulting James Patrick O'MALLEY, aged 6 years, son of Sgt. O'MALLEY. He pleaded not guilty. STRUDWICK said the boy had thrown a stone and hit him in the eye and had poked his tongue out at him. A witness said STRUDWICK had slapped the boy on his face. William HOWARD aged 11 years said him and Jimmy O'MALLEY were throwing stones at a stick, when it slipped back and hit the constables hat, knocking it off. The constable then punched Jimmy in the mouth and again as he was getting up. Found guilty and fined 10 shillings

Michael John BROSNAHAN aged 10, his sisters Mary Ann aged 9 and Mary Jane aged 5 were brought up before the court under the Neglected Children Act. Their mother died about a week ago and their father is supposed to have drowned. They were sent to St. Mary's Orphanage in Nelson

Mr SCRIMGEOUR, the proprietor of the Tahoraite Hotel has disposed of his interest to Mr CRANE, a well known coach driver in Waipawa.

A body supposed to be that of John MACDOUGALL, who has been missing for sometime has been found in the river at Maraekakaho.

An inquest was held in Hastings before Dr. HITCHINGS on the body of John MACDOUGALL. Hannah MACDOUGALL, wife of the deceased stated that her husband left home on 09 May to go mustering in Patea. The jury returned a verdict of "Found Dead"

Inquest William HARRISON- died from the effects of a fall from his horse. He died from imflammation of the abdominal viscera.

Yesterday afternoon, the first operation was performed in the new hospital. A boy of about 11 years had nearly the entire shaft of one of the bones of the arm removed, for necrosis or death of the bone The operation was performed by Dr DE LISLE and was assisted by Drs. SPENCER & MENZIES.

Court Sarah Elizabeth WILSON - Had no lawful visiblemeans of support. Her children James WILSON, William WILSON, John WILSON, CATHERINE WILSON & Thomas WILSON were charged with being neglected children. The children were ordered to be sent to Burnham Industrial School in Canterbury. James - for 4 yrs, William - 5yrs, John, Catherine & Thomas for 7 yrs. All had to be brought up in the Church of England faith. Their mother Sarah got three months imprisonment with hard labour.
