A Scandinavian - Peter LARSEN, died suddenly last evening at Mrs VAUGHAN's, Meanee Hotel. He had been working for Mrs VAUGHAN as a laborer and had been unwell for sometime.

There is a dispute over the will of the late chief Karaitiana TAKAMOANA. His brother Henry is dissatisfied with the disposition of the prpoerty and intends to dispute the will when probate is applied for. The estate is valued at about 40,000 pounds. The bulk of the property is left to his six year old son.
The three widows of the chief are to get the following:
Maritene - the favourite - 240 pounds a year
Betty & Victorine - 100 pounds a year.
These annuities, however, cease if the recipients re marry

The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Porangahau, with 9 acres of land was sold for 1,700 pounds.

The Inspector of Schools, Mr HILL, computes that there should be 3100 children attending school in the district, but the average attendance at the close of the Dec. quarter was 1649.
The total school area in all the district schools was only sufficient to provide for 900 children. So this makes it hard to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Education Act.

Supreme Court Sentence NOROWHARE - was found guilty of horse stealing. Mr MILLER, chief gaoler proved a previous conviction against the prisoner for house breaking at Waiapu. Sentence: To be kept in the Public Prison, Napier for 12 months.
Horse Stealing Waka TAKATAKA - Indicted for stealing a mare, the property of Joseph SIMPSON. The case was sent to trial from Gisborne.
Verict : Found guilty. Sentence deffered until morning.
** Forging a Cheque Vernon CAMPBELL - pleaded not guilty to forging and uttering a cheque for 36 pounds, purporting to be signed by Mr. A. M'LEAN, with intent to defraud Bank of Australasia.
In January last, the prisoner went to the shop of J.R. EVANS, Saddler, Taradale and asked for a blank cheque. Mr EVANS gave him on and saw him write something on a piece of paper that looked like a cheque. Next day the prisoner went to a Horse Bazaar at Napier and there said he wanted a horse to replace a valuable animal he had sold to Archibald M'LEAN, manager on Douglas M'LEAN's station at Maraekakaho. He purchased a horse and tendred a cheque for 36 pounds signed by A. M'LEAN. Mr MONTEITH deducted 12 pounds and gave him a cheque of his own for 24 pound as change. Mr M'LEAN repidiated the cheque, declaring the signature a forgery.
The prisoner stated that the cheque was really signed by a person of the name Allan M'LEAN whom he had first known in 1861 when they were working at Maraekakaho. Allan M'LEAN , according to the prisoner had been back in Napier in January last but had left and could not now be located
Verdict : Found guilty of uttering. Prisoner remanded until following morning for sentence

Supreme Court
Sentence Charles CHRISTIENSEN - was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor. Annie CHRISTIENSEN - was furher remanded in order that time might be allowed to receive an answer from Burnham Reformatory as to whether there was room for the girl.

Acquitted Henry LOWE & William BISHOP - Indicted for breaking into the dwelling house of Hannah FALLON & stealing 2 pounds.
The prosecutrix kept a house that had a bad character and the prisoners were two of a mob of about 20 who entered the house. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

Burglary James LE BAS - Aged 12 years. Charged with entering the premises of Levi WHITE and stealing cooper money & tokens. Pleaded guilty and was sentenced to be imprisoned in Napier Gaol until Wednesday and then to be sent to Burnham Reformatory for 5 years.

Sheep Stealing Yokham SKOTT - charged with stealing 5 ewes the property of Donald M'MASTER. SKOTT is a butcher at Danevirk and Mr M'MASTER has a sheep run about 3 miles from the township Evidence taken from:

It appears that Burnham is only an Industrial School, not a reformatory and that criminal children can not be sent there. This will necessitate the reconsideration of the setence passed upon the boy LE BAS.
A special sitting of the Supreme Court will be held tomorrow to deal with the boys case and also the girl M'KENNA whom it is proposed to send to a school under the "Neglected & Criminal Children's Act".

Constance & Thomas M'KENNA, two children whom the police are seeking to send to the Burnham Industrial School, to remove them beyond the reach of the evil influence of their mother were brought up at thr R.M. Court, but Judge KENNY was obliged to remand them as the necessary Gazette notice authorising children to be sent from Hawkes Bay to the Burnham School, Canterbury had not been received. James LANGHAN, a boy whose father is undergoing imprisonment for life for wife murder, was also remanded for similar records.

Peter LUNDON , on remand, charged with lunacy was sent to the asylum. John FARRELL who was similarly charged , was further remanded.

Inquest Was held on Tuesday at the Royal Hotel, Carlyle St, before Dr. HITCHINGS, coroner & a jury, on the boy of Thomas DUFFY, who died suddenly on Monday evening in the house of William KYLE, Chaucer Rd. He had been sickly for sometime. He had heart problems. Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
Court The three "neglected" children to be sent to Burnham Reformatory School are Constance & Thomas M'KENNA for 7 years and James LANGHAN for 5 years. They are all to be brought up in the Roman Catholic faith.

Re: Drowning in Tuki Tuki River The mans name was EKE and he was in the employ of Mr MULLINDER and was in engaged in carrying the mail between Kaikora & Patangata. The river was swollen at the time and he had been in the company of a man called KING. EKE was an Englishman , a native of Norfolk. He had been in the colony about 2 years
and was unmarried.

Mary M'KENNA, a woman of notorious character, who has previously served a term of imprisonment was yesterday sentenced by Mr KENNY to 3 months hard labor. She is the mother of the two children who were recently sent to the Burnham Industrial School to place them beyond the reach of her evil example. Sgt. O'MALLEY & Det. GRACE gave a shocking account of their visit to the woman's house, the neighbours will be glad to know that for 3 months at least their eyes will not be offended by the disgraceful scenes to which they have sometimes been unwilling witnesses.

An inquest was held at Norsewood yesterday on the body of a woman named LAURIG, whose death shortly after childbirth took place under circumstances that appeared to render an inquiry necessary. We have not as yet heard the result.

There ia charming old maori woman in the Napier Lunatic Asylum. She answers to the name Heromina and lived at Wairoa. She is described as harmless but has an objectionable habit of setting her neighbours houses on fire.

Birth LEACH : At Te Aute, on Friday July 11, wife C. LEACH, of a daughter
Court Carl Marie GRADMAN, charged with causing the death of Caroline LAURVIG. Mr LEE defended the prisoner
Evidence by : Edward Anderson LAURVIG, storekeeper at Norsewood and husband of the deceased, said that on 29 June his wife was confined with twins. A nurse named Mrs STAAKKI was present. After the first child was born the nurse told him to fetch a doctor and he went for Mr GRADMAN who was "a kind of doctor, helping people when they were ill". Mr GRADMAN told him he had better get an English doctor and he said he would do so , but pressed him (GRADMAN) to go to the house. On seeing Mrs LAURVIG he told witness to go at once for the doctor.
This was between 4 & 5 in the morning or about 1 and a half hours after GRADMAN arrived. Witness was about 1 and a half hours catching his horse, he then rode off to Kopua and caught the train for Waipukurau where he found Dr. REED. they returned by the next train. Dr REED rode from Kopua on horseback and witness was following in the coach. On his arrival at home he found Dr. REED there, the child was born and Mrs LAURVIG appeared to be all right. After the doctor left she seemed to improve up to midnight when she became worse, dying at about 5 o'clock in the morning. When she died a neighbour Mrs GUNDERSON was with her. Mrs STAAKKI had gone to lie down in another room. Anna STAAKKI, wife of Harold STAAKKI said she was living with Mrs LAURVIG, 5 or 6 weeks before her death. She was engaged to assist in the housework and not as a nurse. Mrs ERICKSON was present at the birth of the first child and also while GRADMAN was attending to Mrs LAURVIG.

Dr. REED- Waipukurau. When the other child was born he noticed that both arms had been torn away, which would be the effect of GRADMAN's procedure. The child was of course dead. He left Mrs LAURVIG free of pain and comortable, but he had doubt of her recovery. Her death he attributed to exhaustion. He believed that if she had been attended by a skilled medical man at first she would of lived.
Judge KENNY asked the witness whether he thought that, had the accused not attended Mrs LAURVIG - that was, had she been left witout medical attention until his arrival - she would have recovered. Dr. REED replied he was not prepared to say that. Judge KENNY said there was no direct evidence to show that Mrs LAURVIG's death was due to the unskilful treatment of the accused and that no jury would convict him. GRADMAN was therefore discharged from custody

A Zulu woman who is known as the "Cape Pigeon" figured in the court yesterday. We believe that she came from the Cape some years ago as a servant to an English Officer, but she subsequently led a disreputable life.

FLOYD is a violent man and during the late severe weather had turned his children, quite naked, into the streets on several occassions.
