A Scandinavian - Peter LARSEN, died suddenly last evening at Mrs VAUGHAN's, Meanee Hotel. He had been working for Mrs VAUGHAN as a laborer and had been unwell for sometime. There is a dispute over the will of the late chief Karaitiana
TAKAMOANA. His brother Henry is dissatisfied with the disposition of the
prpoerty and intends to dispute the will when probate is applied for.
The estate is valued at about 40,000 pounds. The bulk of the property
is left to his six year old son. The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Porangahau, with 9 acres of land was sold for 1,700 pounds. The Inspector of Schools, Mr HILL, computes that there
should be 3100 children attending school in the district, but the average
attendance at the close of the Dec. quarter was 1649. Sat 03 May 1879 Birth COWELL : At Napier, on May 02, wife of J.M. Dr. HITCHINGS received a telegram from Dr. HECTOR, stating that in the stomach of the late Mrs M'LENNAN, arsenic had been discovered. Court yesterday charged with the wilful murder of his wife, Louisa Caroline M'LENNAN on 27 Mar last. Mr LASCELLES appeared for the accused who seemed to be perfectly cool & collected. He is to be remanded for 8 days in order that time might be allowed for holding the adjourned inquest on the body of the late Mrs M'LENNAN. The previous charge of false pretences against the prisoner was withdrawn in consequence of the other more serious offence Tuesday 13 May 1879 Death FRANKLIN: On 12 May, at the residence of the parents, White Rd, John , eldest son of John & Ellen FRANKLIN. Aged 3 years 9 months. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr FRANKLIN, White Rd, at 2.30 pm tomorrow Charles MONTEITH - Assistant at PRICE & Co's Miss Julia TATHAM, a lady who was at Mr POWDRELL's, Meanee, has disappeared. She left Mr PARSON's, Papakura, a little after dark on Monday evening and her horse was found yesterday morning. MANGINISON's hotel at Castle Point was last night burnt

indicited for selling arms without a license at Poverty Bay. R.M. Court The eight volunteers who left by the "Ladybird" for Wellington are to join the Field Force at Taranaki. Among them was Rowley HILL, who gained the N.Z. Cross of Valour in 1869 for his conduct during the Mohaka Massacre. Burglary at Mr GOLSTONE's Store at Frasertown. No particulars are yet known Supreme Court Joseph HUTCHINSON - appeared for sentencing
on the charge of stealing. As he was 69 years and had been in prison since
December last, a light sentence would therefore be inflicted. Hard labor
for six months. Saturday 14 June 1879 A Gazette notice directs that all children dealt with under the " Neglected & Criminal Children's Act 1867", within the Provincial District of Hawkes Bay are in future to be sent to the Burnham Reformatory, Christchurch. Port Ahuriri day school will be opened Monday next in the old school house until the new school building is completed. Mr GUSH is the Master Supreme Court Sentence NOROWHARE - was found guilty of
horse stealing. Mr MILLER, chief gaoler proved a previous conviction against
the prisoner for house breaking at Waiapu. Sentence: To be kept in the

LE BAS. Supreme Court Arson Patrick WHELAN - charged with setting fire to the house of William HAWKER at Meanee on 25 Feb last Jury returned a verdict of not guilty R.M. Court Breach of Post Office Act William SUTHERLAND, mail carrier, charged with delaying the mails entrusted into his care. He should of carried the mail overland to Wairoa, but with the intention of saving time he put them on board a steamer advertisedto sail that day. Court, but Judge KENNY was obliged to remand them as the necessary Gazette notice authorising children to be sent from Hawkes Bay to the Burnham School, Canterbury had not been received. James LANGHAN, a boy whose father is undergoing imprisonment for life for wife murder, was also remanded for similar records. Peter LUNDON , on remand, charged with lunacy was sent
to the asylum. John FARRELL who was similarly charged , was further remanded. Birth M'IVER : At Waikari, on 14 June, wife of Murdick M'IVER, of a son. R.M. Court A man has been drowned in the Tuki Tuki, while attempting
to cross the river near Patengata, yesterday morning. Death MOORE : On 25 June, at Waipawa, Percy Theodore, infant son of Thomas Moore. Aged 4 & a half months old. The funeral will take place this day at 3 pm Inquest Was held on Tuesday at the Royal Hotel, Carlyle
St, before Dr. HITCHINGS, coroner & a jury, on the boy of Thomas DUFFY,
who died suddenly on Monday evening in the house of William KYLE, Chaucer
Rd. He had been sickly for sometime. He had heart problems. Jury returned
a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Re: Drowning in Tuki Tuki River The mans name was EKE
and he was in the employ of Mr MULLINDER and was in engaged in carrying
the mail between Kaikora & Patangata. The river was swollen at the
time and he had been in the company of a man called KING. EKE was an Englishman

are : Court Mr RATHBONE has been obliged to close his sawmills at
Waipawa, discharging all hands. If trade does not improve he will also
have to close his Hampden Mills Mary M'KENNA, a woman of notorious character, who has
previously served a term of imprisonment was yesterday sentenced by Mr
KENNY to 3 months hard labor. She is the mother of the two children who
were recently sent to the Burnham Industrial School to place them beyond
the reach of her evil example. Sgt. O'MALLEY & Det. GRACE gave a shocking
account of their visit to the woman's house, the neighbours will be glad
to know that for 3 months at least their eyes will not be offended by
the disgraceful scenes to which they have sometimes been unwilling witnesses. An inquest was held at Norsewood yesterday on the body of a woman named LAURIG, whose death shortly after childbirth took place under circumstances that appeared to render an inquiry necessary. We have not as yet heard the result. R.M. Court Death CARTER : At Gisborne, Poverty Bay, on July 4th, George Augustus, second son of the late Capt. J.C.L CARTER. Aged 25 years. At the inquest on the body of Mrs LAURIG, whose death in child bed at Norewood we noticed on Saturday, a verdict was returned to the effect that she died from unskilful treatment by a non qualified attendant. A warrant has been issued against Carl GUDMAN, the chemist who attended her Tues 08 July 1879 Death LASCELLES : At Waipawa on 6 JUly, of capillary bronchitis, adolarious, W.H.H. LASCELLES, eldest surviving son of the late Thomas Allen LASCELLES, formerly Lieutenat & Adjutant of H.M 63rd Regiment Foot & Chief Police Magistrate of the Colony of Van Diemens Land. Aged 53 years. Australian, Tasmanian & Canterbury papers please copy. The funeral will leave his late residence this day ay 2 pm. Interred at Kaikora The Native Land Court is still sitting in Wairoa. A good number of business has however been alresady disposed of. of a son R.M. Court There ia charming old maori woman in the Napier Lunatic
Asylum. She answers to the name Heromina and lived at Wairoa. She is described
as harmless but has an objectionable habit of setting her neighbours houses
on fire. Dr. REED- Waipukurau. When the other child was born he
noticed that both arms had been torn away, which would be the effect of
GRADMAN's procedure. The child was of course dead. He left Mrs LAURVIG
free of pain and comortable, but he had doubt of her recovery. Her death
he attributed to exhaustion. He believed that if she had been attended
by a skilled medical man at first she would of lived. Samuel LUPTON - charged with stealing watch, chain &

10.46. The shock was felt the same time at Wairoa A Zulu woman who is known as the "Cape Pigeon" figured in the court yesterday. We believe that she came from the Cape some years ago as a servant to an English Officer, but she subsequently led a disreputable life. charged with arson & burglary. He was brought up yesterday before
