R m Court Henry BLAKE, 11 years, Charles BLAKE, 8 years were in court under the "Neglected Criminals Children's Act ". Their father had died in the gaol from excessive drinking a few days ago and they were now utterly destitute. They were sent to the Industrial school at Meanee for a period of two years.

Kopua - On Saturday a boy named SMALL, about 7 years fell down a well 36 feet deep, containing 4 feet of water. He was in the water for 10 minutes and found it was impossible
to resuscitate the lad.

A fatal accident occured at the town hall reserve, Carlyle St, yesterday afternoon, by which a laborer named John CARTWRIGHT lost his life. He was undermining a portion of the reserve when a large quantity of earth fell on him. He leaves a wife but no children. John COUGHLAN had his left arm broken at the same time

RM Court Larceny - Thomas FLOYD - Charles GOLDSMITH, two boys, the former 10 years old, were brought up charged with having stolen peaches and pears from the garden of Mr James BURNESS, of Tennyson St, on Saturday last, valued at 1 pound. GOLDSMITH had been arrested the previous night and a key was found on him which fitted the lock of Dr, DE LISLE's safe, which had been stolen that day. Both GOLDSMITH & FLOYD had previously had similar charges against them, for which they had been imprisoned.
Both were remanded till next day.

An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at Napier hospital before S. BEGG, coroner, respecting the death of John Hare. The evidence of Dr. De LISLE was to the effect that death had resulted from apoplexy, and a verdict to that effect was returned by the jury.

Capt. SMITH, of the ss "Mohaka" was drowned yesterday morning while coming up to the bar at Porangahau. He went up the mast to look out and in doing so, fell overboard. There being a heavy sea no attempt was made to save him. We have since heard the body has been washed up on the beach at Porangahau.

The stockade at Mt. Vernon has burnt down. It is thought to have been an act of incendiary.

Authority has been received for the immediate erection of the necessary offices and police buildings, at Napier, Danevirk, Clive, Taradale, Hastings, Woodville & Tologa Bay.

Fire at Gisborne - Feb 11 A terrible fire is raging. The places burnt are : BEST's draper & grocer, MASMYTHS - jeweller, Albion Hotel, ADAIR's Store, BRADLEY's Stables, GOODS jeweller, Dr. CURRIES, COOPER & GFIFFITHS shoe shops, ADAM's stationer, FINNERAM's cottage. The brick walls of the new BNZ building, stopped the progress up the street.

According to the natives he was sold to them at Napier by his mother for 2/6d and a kit of kumara. He states his mother and father are still living in Napier and his father is employed as a carter.

FLINT's Store - Most of the goods had been removed.
In order to save the Clyde Hotel, GILLIGAN's Bootshop was removed from the blocks out into the street and this stopped the progress of the fire.

The well known chief Karaitiana TAKAMOANA M.H.R, for the East Coast, breathed his last an early hour yesterday morning at the Maori Club. he had been ailing for some months. The body of the deceased chief was conveyed to Pakowhai yesterday.

Gisborne - Feb 24 A young man named BAKER, cut his throat at Ormond. He was low spirited from fever. The verdict returned was one of "unsound mind".

Mr Noble came through from Wairoa to Gisborne in a one horse break in 60 hours. He only had to take the horse out of harness once. It is a fair road, and a splendid grazing country. Fruit is abundant along the road.

A young man named Michael O'NEILL, who was in the employment of Michael HAYDEN, contractor, was drowned yesterday. he had been bathing in the sea.

The deceased was an arrival by the " City of Auckland" and it is a curious circumstance that this is the third of those immigrants who have perished by accident.

Bolet was discharged.
Annie - sentenced to one weeks imprisonment , with hard labour.
Ole CHRISTIANSEN - Husband & father of the prisoners was charged with being a receiver of stolen goods. The boots were found on his feet. Defendant said he did not know the boots were stolen. The Bench gave him the benefit of the doubt & discharged him.

We regret to state that two children of very tender age , named MANSFIELD & HAWKINS, were drowned at the Spit, yesterday about noon. The children were amusing themselves in the water at the back of the N.Z.Shipping Co. when the accident happened. They were discovered by the father
of one of the children. We hear they were brought out alive, but expired shortly afterwards.

R.M. Court Edward GOLDSMITH., Augustus DURNEY & Albert WILLIAMS,all boys under 14 years, were charged with larceny of posts and rails,the property of Dr. HITCHINGS. They were sentenced to one months imprisonment with hard labour and to be once privately whipped.
Anne CHRISTIANSEN -charged with stealing two watches and a ring, property of R.W. JENSEN.
Bolet, Charles & Elina CHRISTIANSEN, mother, brother & sister of the accused were charged with receiving. Elina was discharged in consequence of her previous good character and also because she was required as a witness.
Remanded until tomorrow

Mr LIGHT - engineer of the ss " Clyde" - lost his home in Wairoa to fire. The home had been tenanted for the last 9 months by Rev. J. SPEAR & had been empty for two days. It has been decided , we learn to hold an inquest on the body of the wife of Roderick Hugh M'LENNAN. Mrs M'LENNAN died some few weeks ago at the Masonic Hotel, and it being thought by the police authorities that the circumstances in connection with her death call for an inquiry, an order for the exhumation of the body has been issued by
the coroner Dr. HITCHINGS, and a post mortem will be helld by Drs SPENCER & DE LISLE. The inquest is to be held at the barracks on Wednesday next,
but it will be only for the purpose of identifying the body prior to forwarding the stomach , to the Government Analyst at Wellington. On receipt here of his report the inquest will be resumed

Roderick HughM'LENNAN is charged with having obtained money and goods on false pretencesand will be brought up on remand at court this morning.M'LENNAN is animmigrant per the ship "Wellington", which arrived at Port Chalmers on20 Mar 1878. He then proceeded to Canterbury as chief shepherd for Sir Thomas TANCRED. Six months ago he went to Melbourne for the purpose of getting married. He did so and on his return to Dunedin he lived in hotels and borrowed and spent money very freely
