The Herald Anniversary. The seventh anniversary of the present proprietorship of the HAWKE'S BAY HERALD was celebrated last Saturday by an entertainment given by the proprietors to their employees. A special carriage on the railway having been engaged for the occasion, the proprietors and the employees, together with a few visitors, proceeded by the 11.30 train to Hastings, where the holiday-making was fixed to take place. The pleasures of the day commenced with a cricket match, the sides being the Married against the single. The game was played in a paddock near the railway line, where a tent was pitched.

Edwin WALMSLEY, seaman of the barque Adamant, was charged by Thomas BOWLING
Master of the ship, with having disobeyed lawful commands on board the vessel on the 2nd instant. Defendant said he did not want to go with the capatain, that he was made to do all the dirty work on board the vessel. His Worship sentenced him to imprisonment for one month, with hard labor, and to be put on board the ship when she was ready for sea.

Thomas LONG was fined 10s or 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness.

John DILLON, was charged with being drunk. The accused said he was a stranger in Napier, and it being the first time he was ever before a Court on any charge; he hoped his Worship would not be hard on him. The accused was discharged.

Mr STEPHENSON, mate of the Hawea, who met with an accident last night while the vessel was going down the harbor, by a block falling on his head, died at 8 o'clock this morning, having never recovered consciousness.

In the Supreme Court this morning, Justice RICHMOND sentenced Robert JACOBSEN, alaias Count Mourarieff, for obtaining money under false pretences, to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labor on each of the two charges, but made the sentences run consecutively. Frederick CATLIN, who indecently assaulted a young girl at the Hutt, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labor, but without any flogging. Jansen BERQUIST, on two charges of sheep-stealing from the Maories at Manawatu, was acquitted on both charges.

Wanganui April 4. Steamer WALLACE was discovered at daylight this morning riding at anchorage evidently disabled, six miles south of Wanganui Heads, and about a mile and a half from the shore, flying signals of distress. She had nine passengers. Telegrams were sent to Nelson and Wellington, there being no steamer in the port of Wanganui. She is now riding heavily, the keel being visible at times. If the wind rises her position is dangerous.

Later At 7 p.m. the wind decreased, and the sea has now gone down. The steamer Wallace is now riding at anchor easily.

A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon on the Western harbor works to a young man named William FRANCIS. He went over with a horse, to exchange it for one being used there. In getting upon one of the trucks while it was in motion his foot slipped and was caught in one of the wheels, and before he could get it extricated his foot was severely crushed. He was relieved from his painful position as soon as possible and was placed in a cab and brought to town to the residence of Dr CARO, who attended the injuries the unfortunate young man has sustained.

Mr SYMONS, pianaforte tuner, is again on a professional visit to Napier.

A case of starlings has been received from the Otago Acclimatisation Society for Mr Thomas WHITE of Glengarry.

The Borough Councillors of Gisborne, headed by the Mayor Mr CRAWFORD, have formed themselves into a Volunteer Fire Brigade until a regular Fire Brigade has been established.

DEATH TINNEY-At Napier, on April 5, Mary Jane, the beloved daughter of Thomas and Mary TINNEY, aged 10 years.

Mr WALLACE was towed by the steamer Murray, which was sent from Nelson. The Wallace left Nelson on Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning, when about 25 miles N E of Stechen's Island, it was found that the paddle shaft was injured and disconnected. She tried to proceed with one engine, and afterwards by sail. She got within four miles of Wanganui Heads, dropped anchor and signalled for assistance. She rode easily at anchor, and was towed in by the Murray. The Wallace will go back by Nelson for repairs.

Death MANN-At Auckland, on April 7th, Caroline, the beloved wife of W E MANN aged 25 years.

Only business at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning consisted of a boy named Thomas BUTLER, convicted the previous day of stealing three towels from Mr STUART of Havelock. As prisoner has already been convicted of larceny, he could not overlook the present offence. He warned the prisoner that if he persisted in stealing, as he had been doing, he would find it would end in his being heavily sentenced, and being compelled to spend the best portion of his time in prison. He would sentence him to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. The boy cried bitterly as he was taken away in charge of the constable.

Mr W W WILSON, barrister and solicitor, formerly of Dunedin, and recently of Poverty Bay, has resumed the practice of his profession at Panama Chambers in Wellington.
Mr T R PROCTOR, jeweller and optician, of Christchurch, is now in Napier. His stock of watches, jewellery, and spectacles now on view at the Masonic Hotel.

Mr and Mrs Hugh CARLETON, (says the N.Z.Herald of Wednesday last) were passengers by the s.s. Rotorua to Sydney. Thence they proceed to England, whence they intend to spend the remainder of their days. Many of the old residents were present to bid them farewell. Mr CARLETON had a seat in the first House of Representatives as member for the Bay of Islands, and sat in the House continuously for seventeen years, being defeated in the general election of 1871.

It is just as if Capt NEWMAN, having obtained a fancy price for the section opposite to that reserved for a post and telegraph office, were now to put up the post and telegraph office reserve for sale. If our correspondent's statements are correct, "unfairly treated," we should say is too mild a term.

We hear that Sergeant WHITE, of the Napier police force, has received orders to proceed to Gisborne, to take charge of that district. Sergeant WHITE, since his arrival in Napier in September last, has always been a most energetic and useful officer, and we hope his removal may turn out to be to his advantage. We have not heard who is to be his successor.

Mr H ROBERTS, the champion billiard player, will make his first appearance in Napier at the Criterion billiard saloon on Friday evening next.

A mob of sheep from Mr MERRICK, of Napier, passed through Palmerston on the 5th instant. We were informed (says the Manawatu Times) they started one thousand strong, but between those that died, and others lost on the road, on reaching Palmerston they were 150 short of that number.

John INGLETON, railway station master at Te Aute, had laid an information against a person named JENSEN for obstructing him in his duty, contrary to the provisioners of the Bye-Laws; Case was dismissed, so that information might be amended.

James ALLARDYCE, who was party to three cases set down for hearing, was delayed in Wellington. Hearing adjourned by the court to 14th May.

Resident Magistrate's Court. Friday April 12th Before R BEETHAM

Larceny. John Peter Napolean was brought up, on remand from the 5th instant, charged with stealing a cheque of the value of 21 pounds 13s 4d, the property of Henry FLINT, hotelkeeper of Wairoa.. The cheque was addressed to Mrs TAYLOR Napier. The next that witness heard of the cheque was when he received a telegram from Mr WALL stating the above circumstances.

Joseph LeQUESNE, timber merchant in regard to timber supplied and sent to Mr GUY's house. Mr RENOUF stated he would pay him for the timber that went up for plaintiff. Then refused to pay it.
John RENOUF, builder of Kaikora deposed that he had performed some work for Mr GUY.

W CHRISTISSEN, carpenter, stated that worked at Mr GUY's house for nine days. To his knowledge there was no timber used that came from LeQUESNE's yard.

Death HILL- At Napier on April 14, Thomas Henry, Infant son of Thomas Walter and Grace HILL

The Rev Mr SPEAR, in the course of his sermon at St John's Church, yesterday morning, made a touching reference to the late Bishop SELWYN, whose death was announced in cablegrams on Saturday.

In the Resident Magistrates Court Mr J W CARLILE was fined 5s, and costs 6s 6d, for allowing his horse to wander at large in the streets-

An information was brought by Margaret HAGUE against her husband John HAGUE, for the use of threatening language towards her. Evidence on both sides was taken at length, but his Worship eventually dismissed the case.

The Poverty Bay Standard of March 30th contains a report of the proceedings at the presentation of the New Zealand Cross, made to Major ROPATA, at Waiomatatini, by S LOCKE, Esq., R.M., who was commissioned by the government to perform the duty. The presentation took place in the Court-house, from 300 to 400 persons, Europeans and natives, being present.

Public Opinion, in reviewing a book called "The Telephone, and how to Make it," by Prof. A E DOLBEAR, says: "This is a very sensible pamphlet, which we hope will enable everyone to understand the elementary principles of the construction of an instrument which is the wonder of the year, and very soon may become of very great practical use."

It is notified in the GAZETTE of the 11th instant that Mr John Lowther D'Arcy IRVINE has been appointed a cadet in the Surveyor-General's Department at Napier.

Monague McMURDO, son of Captain McMURDO, of the Mutual Life Association, was thrown from his horse, and sustained concussion of the brain. It is feared that the injuries are fatal.

The City Council today referred the question of the employment of Mr CLARK, C.E. to the public works committee.

Messrs LUSK and HAMLIN have addressed their constituents. Both dissented from Sir George GREY, concerning the extention of the franchise, as a present any man who owned a carpet bag had a vote. Votes of confidence in Messrs LUSK and HAMLIN were passed.

Local intelligence. We hear that the illness under which the native chief Te HAPUKA has been lately suffering has taken a dangerous turn, and there are but faint hopes of his recovery.

It is reported that Hans THOMSEN, who was tried at the last Supreme Court sittings, for the murder of his partner OLLANDT, and acquitted, was imprisoned at Masterton a few days agio for engaging in a quarrel with a recent arrival from Napier on the subject of OLLANDT's murder, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the whole affair.

Local Respecting the Port Ahuriri Bridge, a telegram from Wellington states the Government will grant a subsidy for it of 6000, Pounds, and will give the contactor a lease for 21 years.

The census returns for the provincial district of Hawke's Bay show the number of inhabitants as follows:-

At the 1874 census the inhabitants of Napier numbered 3514- being an increase of about 2000 since March, 1874.

The Manawatu Times says:- "The new Commissioner, Mr LAWSON, has been for the past week in the district, and appears fully alive to the necessity of making suitable provision for the vast timber trade which should be encouraged".

The Royal Italian Opera Concert Company will give a series of six grand opera concerts in the Theatre Royal, commencing next Monday next.

The Taradale- Conservators invite tenders for forming an embankment opposite Mrs J HAWKINS' property at Taradale, and also for erecting about three chains of fencing at the same place.

Mr J LAWTON of Taradale, expresses in a letter in this issue, his thanks to the residents in his neighbourhood who have subscribed to a fund for building a new house for him, in place of the one recently destroyed by fire. He, however, respectfully declines to accept the amount subscribed, as he is not left entirely destitute, and he considers that he would be intruding on a generous public by taking the sum so generously offered to him. He also return thanks to those who gave assistance at the fire.

Mr F SUTTON, is a candidate for the Clive seat in the Hawke's Bay County Council, and publishes his address to the electors of that riding in this issue..

We hear that the subdivisional survey of the land near Ashley-Clinton which, we were informed recently, was about to be cut up into farming blocks with a township, has been commenced.

Also Mr J A SMITH- acting in absence of the secretary to the Harbor board-telegraphed yesterday to Captain JOHNSTONE of the Marine Board Wellington, enquiring when Sir John GOODE might be expected in Napier- with the reply back "uncertain when Sir John GOODE will be in Napier, but probably about 14th May. He is now detained at Westport, through bad weather."

Resident Magistrate's Court, John MURRAY was find 5s, or in default 24 hours imprisonment for drunkenness. Edward COYLE also fined for the same offence.

A charge of larceny against a native was at Inspector SCULLY's request adjourned till next session.

One of settlers Mr GREGORY, had an accident on Saturday last, the arm of a tree came down on his head, stunning him to the ground, and leaving a cut in his head of 1 1/2 inches long. He is in a fair way, and we hope with care he will not be long before he will be well again. He is a member of the Rose of Sharon Tent, I.O.R, therefore the members of that body will look after him.

We have our schoolmaster Mr CRAWFORD. He opened school in the temporary building got for his use. He had between 40 and 50 scholars last week; he expects an increase this week.

We fully expect when all the settlers are here, including the Bush Mills, Association, there will be more than 100 scholars.

An accident occurred in the White road last evening- Mr DELAHAY was alighting from HAMBLING's trap when a butcher's cart riding furiously, knocked the boy down, and broke one of his legs. Dr SPENCER being sent for, after boy was carried home, set the limb.

.Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, before R BEETHAM, Esa., R.M., a claim of 100 pounds brought by John RIGGIR, of Maraekakaho, against George BURGESS, having wrongfully removed a quantity of goods from Riggir's house.
Mr RIGGIR, who has left her husband, asked defendant BURGESS to take the goods away from her husband's house on 20th January in a trap. Defendant went to the house in company with Mrs RIGGIR and Mrs WALKER of Maraekakaho, where quantity of goods at Mrs Riggir's directions to Mr WALKER's house. Court reserved decision till Tuesday.

Hon Mr BALLANCE paid a brief visit to Napier yesterday. He was a passenger by the Wanaka en route for Wellington, and during the short stay he took the opportunity of coming up to town.

It was stated recently that Mr RHODES left the bulk of his enormous property to Miss RHODES. It is now reported, however, that a very great part, probably the greater part, is likely to go to relatives of the deceased who are resident in England.

At the morning service yesterday at St John's, the Rev. D'Arcy IRVINE, Head Master of the Grammar School, preached the sermon. The discourse was evidently aimed against the Darwinian theory upon the origin of man.

Denis SHANAHAN was brought up at the Res.Mag.Court on Saturday morning, charged with having unlawfully and maliciously struck Fergus CLEARY with a hammer on the 30th April, thereby causing him grievous bodily harm. The case was remanded.

William BARTLETT fined 10s, or 48 hours imprisonment, for drunkenness.

Mr J LEONARD, notifies that he will shortly open again in Napier with a large stock, comprising 200 cases and bales of drapers, &c.

Also noted at the last Auckland races, a little girl the daughter of a Mr EYRE, of Victoria Street, got lost in a crowd.

The Star of the 24th ultimo says:-" Mr William EYRE of Victoria street, has fortunately recovered his lost daughter who was about seven years of age. She had the intention of returning
home, and proceeded to the railway, but mistook the Mercer train for the one to town. Fortunately she got into the company of some shipmates and friends of Mr EYRE, who took care of the child, and sent her back this morning. Mr SWANSON rendered material aid in procuring the restoration of the girl to her parents. All's well that ends well."

Birth WARMAN-At Port Ahuriri, on the 6th May, the wife of Mr A E WARMAN, of a daughter.

Local- A youth named Patrick FLOYD, was unfortunately killed yesterday while working at a quarry on the Town Hill reserve. He was getting earth from the quarry to cart away for filling in the swamp sections, and while so employed there was a fall of earth from the bank above, which coming down over FLOYD, killing him immediately. He had only just a minute before been warned by his employer Mr CARTWRIGHT, that the place where he was working was unsafe.

It was the Hon Mr FISHER who paid a visit to Napier on Sunday morning, and not the Hon Mr balance, as was stated in yesterday's Herald.

Inquest-Patrick LLOYD. An inquest was held yesterday morning, at the Royal Hotel, Hyderabad Road, before Dr HITCHINGS, coroner, and a jury, on the body of Patrick FLOYD, the lad who was killed by a fall of earth at the Town Hall reserve. The evidence showed that the occurrence was purely accidental and that no one was to blame in the matter. A verdict of "Accidental death" was accordingly returned.

Yesterday at the Resident Magistrate's Court, William BARTLETT was fined 20s or 48 hours imprisonment, with hard labor, for drunkenness.Henry FRANCIS was fined 5s for the same offence.

Lyttleton May 8. Arrived-Himalaya, ship, Capt WILLIAMS, 114 days out from London anchor to anchor, 93 days to land. She experienced very severed weather, and sustained considerable damage to her upper works. Two days after passing Tristan de Acunha, on March 19th, she encountered a terrific westerly gale; sea after sea came aboard, smashing topgallants, rails, stern, and deck ports, and carrying away two boats. One seaman named Samuel WILSON, a coloured man, died on March 12 of heart disease. The Himalaya brings 10 passengers; all well.

Local news The Advent of new settlers amongst us is a matter of gratulation-not only those who bring capital, but also those who bring fresh stock and have the skill to manage it. Amongst the arrivals yesterday by the Taupo, was Mr John ANDERSON, of Otago, bringing with him 430 stud merino ewes from the well known flocks of his father Mr ANDERSON, of Wyndham. There was but one opinion expressed about them at the Spit yards yesterday by experts-that they were the best clothed sheep that have arrived here; Mr ANDERSON has joined Mr ROYSE, as resident partner in the Kereru estate, formerly Mr LYON's. Great improvements have been made on that property during the past six months under the management of Mr WIGAN, for Mr ROYSE.

A correspondent write to us:- "Onga Onga is still progressing. Mr John BRITTEN, of Waipawa, has purchased of Mr H H BRIDGE 100 acres of land. Mr COLES, builder, has also settled at Onga Onga, built a large house opposite the smithy of Mr JONES, who is doing a good trade. We are sadly in need of a pound here. Dogs and guns have been busy this month among the pheasants. Colonel HERRICK, I believe, bagged fourteen cocks in two days in the neighbourhood of Hampden."

McDONALD V HARVEY- claim for 12 pounds being the amount paid for a cow from John Harvey, who said the cow was in calf. Alexander McDonald deposed. The cow had been previously purchased from Mr NEWBOLD, and it was stated that he thought it might be in calf, but gave no guarantee as to this fact. Judgment for defendant with costs of 1pound 15s.

LYNDON V UPHAM- Claim for 25 weeks rent at 14s per week. Defendant did not appear and judgment went by default for amount claimed with costs 19s.

LEE V RENNIE-claim for grazing and milk supplied to four calves the property of defendant. William Lee, dairyman of Waitangi deposed. He had made an agreement with defendant who had been in his employ. Defendant took the calves away, but refused to pay for their feed. Andrew Rennie stated there was no agreement made and that they had only been fed on waste milk. Judgment for amount claimed and costs 1pound 12s 6d.

William RUDDOCK of Takapau V J EBBETT Takapau Contractor- claim made for 12 bushells of oats and for cutting chaff, for six days' carting and for the sale of a whare. James CORRY deposed that he had asked Ruddock to cart up feed for Ebett. His Worship stated there was no proof the plaintiff had supplied the oats in dispute. He would give judgment for five days' carting, and 1 pound for cutting chaff- in all, 8 pound 10s, with cost 3 pound 11s.

We have been requested to draw attention to a case which really deserves public sympathy. It is that of Mrs GODDARD and family. About a year ago Mr GODDARD was killed in the White road by falling off his cart, a wheel of which passed over his chest, causing almost instantaneous death. He left a widow and five children, the eldest being a boy sixteen years of age. This lad assisted in the support of the family since his father's death, but last week he died from the effects of low fever. Mrs GODDARD has a small property, but she will have to dispose of it, as she has no means whatever of supporting her family. This is eminently a case which the hand of charity should be extended to help the widow and the fatherless. We shall be glad to receive any subscriptions for the assistance of Mrs GODDARD.

Michael CROPP-charged with having lights burning in his hackney carriage on the night of 14th inst. Defendant admitted the charge. Fined 5s and costs 6s 6d.

Philmon PALMER- charged with plying his cart for hire without the license that should be paid. Since paid. Nominal fine of 1s and costs 6s 6d.

A public meeting, convened by advertisement, was held in the Town Hall, Waipukurau, on Saturday evening last at 8 o'clock, to take steps towards the formation of a public library.

The Artillery Volunteers had a blank cartridge practice last evening on the beach, both with carbines and cannon. The noise of the latter caused some alarm among a few people who were not aware of its being merely a volunteer practice, and who thought it was the Russians who were firing on the town.

Papers Past 24th May 1878-Inquest

Timaru May 23.

An inquest was held in a cave near Timaru yesterday on the body of James CAMPBELL, who was killed by a team of horses he was driving trampling on him. The verdict returned was accidental death.

MURRAY, a schoolmaster, has been charged with indecently assaulting two of his scholars. The case has created a great deal of interest in the neighbourhood, and it has been adjourned.

Local The Chairman drew the attention of he board to an application made on the 2nd of April by Mrs L GODDARD, relative to the transfer of land at Makareta selected by her late husband, and to the board's decision thereon, that if the administrators of her husband's estate applied to the board the land could be transferred to the widow.

In light of recent circumstances which prevented improvements being made on the property, time allowed to be extended. Mrs GODDARD to be advised that in consequence of the delay in surveying, the time for making improvements would be extended to 30th June 1879. The board agreed that this course should be adopted

Death The aged chief Te HAPUKA, who has been ailing for a considerable time past, died at his pah last Thursday evening, at 6 o'clock. The Rev Samuel WILLIAMS was with him, and administered the consolation of religion, the natives joining in the responses with great fervour. After the body had been washed and laid out, the tangi commenced. Some natives who were in the train to town last evening were waving black flags all the way down from the late chief's pah. Te HAPUKA was one of the oldest and best known chiefs in the district, and exercised considerable influence over his tribe.

A report having been spread about yesterday that George Edward TOOP, who was arrested in Sydney, was a passenger to this place by the Rotorua, a number of persons assembled at the wharf, on the arrival of that vessel yesterday, to see his land, but they were doomed to be disappointed, for the launch returned from the Rotorua without bringing the expected fugitive.

Resident Magistrates Court on Saturday morning, before R BETHAN Esq., R.M., William GAINEY was brought up charged with throwing a large stone through one of the Windows of the Criterion Hotel on Friday last, thereby causing damage to the extent of 14s. Robert PRICE deposed-that while sitting in the parlor with R D MANEY and Mr W OLLIVER, when a stone, weighting about 2lb was thrown through the window. The stone was thrown with such force that if it had struck anyone on the head it would probably have killed him. Accused was sentenced to six months imprisonment at the last sittings of the Supreme Court for breaking windows on the Bank of New Zealand premises; altogether, this was the third offence of this nature committed by him. His Worship sentenced him to two months imprisonment with hard labor.

A Porangahau correspondent writes under date May 24:-"Our usually quiet township was enlivened last evening by a ball given by Messrs HARSANT and ADAIR, well respected landlords of the duke of Edinburgh Hotel.

The funeral of chief Te HAPUKA will take place today at Te Aute. We hear that Te HAPUKA's people, and the chiefs TAREHA, Renata KAWEPO, Henare MATUA, and other chiefs yesterday applied to the Government for a special train to be run out to Hauke, near Te Aute, this morning, in order to afford facilities to those desirous of attending the funeral. The Government at once acceded to the request, and a train will leave Napier for that purpose at noon exactly, returning in the afternoon. It is believed that the Government offices, shops, warehouses &c., will be closed during the afternoon, and volunteers under Major WITHERS will be in attendance.

It is believed that the old wreck which lies in Dusky Sound (Otago) is that of the ship Endeavor, off 800 tons, which left Port Jackson for India in September 1795. Mr BAMPTON abandoned the ship there, owing to hr leaky condition, and he, with those on board, managed to reach Norfolk Island. It is extremely probable, says the Australian Shipping News, that the wreck is that of the Endeavor, which was abandoned there in 1795, eight-three years ago; and assuming it to be correct that the woodwork comprised both teak and English oak, it would be an excellent test of the comparative durability of these woods under equal conditions.

Telegraphic Shipping Auckland June 5.

The City of Sydney left Auckland on the 3rd April, and arrived on the 17th; sailed on the 18th, and took the pilot off San Francisco on the 26th. Had strong head winds throughout the entire passage. The mails left for New York on the 27th, catching the steamer leaving for Liverpool on the 4th May. On her return voyage the City of Sydney left San Francisco on the
13th May, arriving at Honolulu on the 21st; left on the same day, and arrived at Auckland about 6.40 to-day. She brings the following passengers for New Zealand:
Mrs GUY, Col.ROSEWITT and wife, Master and Miss BUCKLAND (2), Messrs HOLMES (2), POLLON, DAWSON, BUTTERWORTH, BUTLER, YOUNG, and fourteen steerage.

PEDDIE-At the Taradale Hotel Taradale, on 10th June, 1878, Williams Sinclair Peddie, aged 36, second son of the late W A PEDDIE, of Leith Scotland. The funeral will leave Taradale at 12.30 to-day, 11th instant.

HENRY GROOM. We regret to have to record the death of one of the oldest settlers in Napier, Mr Henry Groom, who expired on Saturday last after a lengthened illness. The deceased who was one of the first policeman in the early days of Napier, was respected by all classed in the community. In his younger days he served in the Spanish Legion, under command of General De Lacy EVANS, and held in that Corps the rank of Quarter-master Sergeant. When he first came here, overland from Wellington, about 25 years since, he was sent to take the census of the district. Although of the advanced age of 77, he was in comparatively robust health till with a year or two ago. The funeral will take place at 3 p.m. today.

FARMER-At Port Napier, on June 11, Janet Eleanor Kate, third aughter of John and Julia FARMER, aged 4 years and 4 months. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr Farmer, Spit, at 2.30 p.m. this day.
Death of Mr Richard CRAIG. We regret to have to record the death of Mr Richard CRAIG, son of one of our oldest and most respected settlers, which occurred yesterday morning in consequence of injuries he received by falling from his horse on the Taradale road the previous night. It appears that the deceased was riding into town when the accident, which had such a fatal termination occurred. An inquest is to be held this morning at half past 9 o'clock at the Exchange Hotel.

Some time ago Mr LEPETTITE received some injuries to his foot and leg in one of the rooms in a house near Porangahau. He was sent to the Napier Hospital and had the leg amputated below the knee. On his recovery a model of the remainder of the limb was made, and Mr BOWERMAN sent it to his agents in London with instructions to purchase an artificial leg. One was ordered from Messrs ARNOLD and Son, the well-known surgical instrument makers, and sent out via the Suez. Mr BOWERMAN received it by the last mail. It is a marvel of beautiful workmanship, and appears wonderfully adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.

We observe from our Auckland files that Mr O C McGEE's racehorse Falcon which was disqualified by the stewards at the last race meeting, met with such serious injuries that it has been found necessary to shoot him. The horse was being ridden at the time by Mr YOUNG>

A sad accident through burning occurred a few days ago to a child of Mr Jesse REDWOOD, a farmer in the Kaikoura district. The mother was outside when the child, which was only two years old, ran out in flames. The little thing subsequently died of the injuries received.

The Hon Robert STOUT, Attorney General, is expected to address his constituents at Dunedin in a few days, and the Native Minister to address the electors of Rodney about the same time.

Richard JOYCE- a contractor, charged William KING, A F HARDY, and J R HURREY, with assaulting him on the 8th instant at the Roseland Hotel. The defendants are all men of means. KING is owner of a large saw-mill, and also a land owner. HURREY is his partner. He is President of the Presbyterian Church Committee, and also a member of the County council. A F HARDY was formerly the late Captain READ's Manager, and is an extensive land owner and sheep farmer.

Evidently while at the hotel HARDY called for champagne, and proposed a toast to Her Majesty's health. JOYCE, who is an Irishman, was on the verandah of the hotel and exclaimed, "To hell with the Queen, and the Duke of Edinburgh too." After hearing a lot of evidence which included statements of Hardy knocking two of Joyce's teeth out, the bench dismissed the charge against Hurrey and King, but committed Hardy to take his trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court in Wellington. Bail was allowed himself
200 pounds, and two sureties in 100 pounds each. Previous to its coming on, the defendants offered Joyce 100 pounds to square it, and a free passage to Wellington to get two false teeth, but Joyce refused.

Local The Rev. Robert HAZLETON, from Dublin, who was lately in Napier, is now lecturing in Wellington, in aid of the erection of a Wesleyan College in Dublin, which was recently referred to.

His Honor the Chief Justice has admitted Mr R C HAMERTON, permanent head of the Stamp Department in Wellington, as a Solicitor and Barrister of the Supreme court.

The usual weekly gun drill of the Napier Artillery Volunteers will take place tonight at 7.30 o'clock, under Sergt-Major GRAY, Sergts GILBERD and SELLARS.

Messrs Stuart and Co will sell today at their stores, the unexpired lease of the premises recently occupied by Mr TAYLOR in Hastings Street.

Court- before His Honor Mr Justice Richmond

Sentences- John Harde ANDERSON was brought up for sentencing, he had nothing to say in his defence. His Honor said he would reserve his decision for the Court of Appeal on technical grounds. Prisoner would, in the meantime, be detained in custody until he could find two sureties of 50pounds each.

Samuel CARDWELL, for larceny, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labor.

Unlawfully wounding
Gotlieb SCHMIDT and Carl SCHMIDT were charged on three counts, with unlawfully wounding Robert WHALE.- John William THOMPSON aced at interpreter.
Mr LEE appeared for prisoners, who pleaded not guilty.
The following jury was empanelled:- Messrs John McVAY (foreman), George BROWN, S A SNELLING, Henry GILBERD, Joseph UPCHURCH, E HAYDEN, Samuel LAIRD, Henry NEAL, Charles KNOX, James HIGGS, Edward SYMONDS, G J SELLARS. Mr cotterill OPENED THE CASE FOR THE CROWN AND CALLED-Charles BAIN, who deposed- platelayer
on the railway line at Kopua- saw accused and MUNSON.

John BARRON-deposed- a baker living at Kopua.- saw prisoners at Kopua and heard Peter JACOBSEN saying, "He's using a knife."

Mr LEE- arrived afterwards and saw and recognised JACOBSEN and GOTLEIB, both covered with blood, also recognised BAIN, WHALE, WARD, CARMICHAEL, and MUNSON.

We learn from a Wairoa telegram that a native named KEREKA has been arrested, charged by a half-caste called HEI HEI with having stolen his horse. KEREKA is supposed to be either made of acting mad.

James GRIFFIN, and old offender, was fined 1 pound (with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment) for drunkenness.

From the Press Agency Auckland 26. Mr James FOLEY, formerly a member of the Provincial council, was killed today on the Onehunga railway. It is supposed that he was knocked down at the crossing place at Onehunga. The body was much mutilated.

Mr MacANDREW and Messrs CONYERS and LAWSON are inspecting the Kaipara railway.

The Grey River Argus, in recording the death, somewhat suddenly, of a compositor named William NELSON, "working in that office of that paper. Complained of violent pains in his stomach, and was so ill that he had to be conveyed to his residence. Medical aid was promptly obtained, but he gradually got worse, and died twelve hours afterwards. Deceased had been in the employ of the Argus proprietors for about nine years. He was 51 years of age, and was a grand-nephew of Admiral Lord NELSON. He leaves a wife and three children."

An enquiry into the circumstances attending the late fire on Mr John McVAY's premises took place at the Masonic Hotel yesterday, before Dr HITCHINGS, Coroner and following jury:- Messrs John NEAL (foreman), Abraham MANOY, Samuel CARNELL, John HIGGINS, Michael HAYDEN, William TUCKWELL,, James ASHTON, J T JOHNSON, T PEDDIE, John MOORE, J HERON, George BENJAMIN, and George FUSZARD. Stock and premises insured for 1700 pounds. That is not half their value. On statement he stated that the nearest chimney to the building is Mr MORRISON the watchmaker, which is fully 50 feet away.

Martin RYAN- charged with drunkenness.-Fined 10s or 24 hours imprisonment

Owen O'DONNELL charged on information of Constable BYRNE-Sgt O'MALLEY stated to the Bench that he had good reason for believing the defendant had not grounds for making of his statement. Fined 10s and costs 9s.

Hans BYGUM was charged, on information of Capt. BOWER, with having altered a certain footway in Emerson Street without the authority of the Corporation. As there was no appearance of the complainant, the case was dismissed.
