Cornet Angus SMITH Opotoki settler with a wife and family commanded Bay of Plenty Volunteers found stripped and naked after 4 days captivity of being tied to a tree with flax before managing to loose himself and escape.(Note also mentioned in Despatches in full account of Massacre.Summary of Account underneath. OPEPE Massacre Tauranga 14th June.
On 10th June Cavalry started out as 12. While we have names of 10 killed, 1 missing, 4 escaped and four with the officers total of 19. Supposed friendly natives shook hands with Mr GILL and talked with four half caste boys, before long, another native came up and ordered others to fire upon our men - all were shot down but not killed- Lieut ROSS then fell dead and Ensign LAWSON shot while still asleep- Young Mr GILL nearly escaped into bush, but was found and dragged out to be tomahawked and more frightfully disfigured than any
of the others. Bugler McGILLOP of Opotoki Troop suspect all was not as it seemed and ran for cover of bush suspecting at first the designs of the visitors and he persuaded his friend LOCKWOOD to escape with him. Which friendly act Cost the poor fellow his life while McGILLOP and was afterwards shot in the bush.
Next day Officers returned and found all our men killed with a note in conspicuous place stating HAU HAUS have killed 9 men at that place, 1 at HEREINI and that they had save (1). Letter was signed" Te KOOTI". Bodies were then buried in 3 graves. 5 in One, 3 in another and any 2 in the third. Te KOOTI letter with bodies said He intended to March towards Waikato viz Tauranga. Residents in isolated areas do not feel safe. Informant Mr Fairfax JOHNSON had just returned from Matata from seeing father of one of the dead- Alexander BLACK, Donald Mc DONNELL both missing.

Natives were filled with exultation at news "KA PAI TE HAU HAU"

'"After making himself cheering his men in the fight against the Hau Haus, refusing to take cover and this where he received his own death wound. He was struck in the waist, bullet severing the Aorta. He gave his men a cheer said " Goodbye, my boys; stick to them, stick to your colors; I've stuck to mine," Then sank down, and resting his head on his hand, next instantly dead.

THE WAR ON THE EAST COAST

The Colonial Government gun boat ST KILDA Capt. Fox, left Napier last evening at 8 o'clock having on board Colonel HARRINGTON who arrived by the Rangatira, an who is understood to have been given to command of the East Coast-whether not to supersede Colonel WHITMORE we are not aware.
The St. Kilda proceeds to Auckland calling at Matata and Tauraunga. On reaching Auckland she will be put undo the orders of Dr. Pollen. The Start Is expected to arrive this da' from the WAIROA with Capt. RICHARDSON's, troop of armed constabulary; after landing which she will, proceed to Wellington. ROPATA, IHAKA WAANA, and KARAITIANA will visit Wellington by this opportunity. The forces are,we believe, to be with. drawn from Fort Galates and Fort Alfred This a movement in the right direction Even could the colony AFFORD It, no beneficial result could accrue from maintaining a large force in the interior during the winter season.
23rd July 1869. PROBABILITY OF 18th REGIMENT BEING DETAINED.

LAST night, we learned for the first time, through the despatch of our Welllngton correspondent, that To Kooti had been received with open arms by the king, and made a high priest of. Prom a despatch subsequently received we learned that, acting on this information, the House of Representatives suspended the standing rules with the view of promptly considering the emergency; and that a resolution had been passed unanimously, requesting Major.. General CHUTE to assume the responsibility in the colony, until the Home Government can be communicated with.
The information from Waikato is understood to have been telegraphed on Wednesday from To Haroto. We have no space for comment, beyond expressing our gratification that the Government and Legislature seem so fully alive to the critical aspect of affairs, and ready to act so promptly plying for that assistance which is so obviously necessary to save the colony from destruction..

Accident..-.Three pack-horses, the property of the General Government, were, yesterday morning,.carried out to sea and drowned, while being crossed at the harbour mouth.

"MANUWHWIRI, the Maori King's prime Minister together with a note from the same personage, and as these documents will throw considerable light on the subject, I have deemed it desirable to forward the letters in question with their translations to you, and respectfully request that you will be good enough to insert the same in your valuable journal. Should you accede to my request, perhaps you will kindly forward slips to the Daily Southern Cross, as similar remarks injurious to the Maori King party have, it is presumed, found their way into the columns of your contemporary.- Yours, &c.;

Te Kuiti, 29th August, 1869.
"To Charles DAVIS.- Your letter is here; I have seen it. O the loving friend, I see plainly, but how can we two help it? We two uncover things, and raise them so all may discern. Lo this is it: the men from the gates or entrances have come. Te KOOTI has gone back. MANGA (REWI) has gone to conduct them to Taupo, where he will leave them. I have heard that the Arawas are at Taupo, but no reply has yet been received to the letter sent to Rotorua.

Friendly one, salutations, friendly one, It was lost, but it is found. Some men have been captured at Ngaruawahia. I have sent a letter requesting their liberation. It is said that the grounds on which their capture took place are guns carried by them from our villages. Our word was right, namely, that the Waikato be not interfered with. Now this is it- they have begun to exasperate again. Friend, the only thing that will bring about the establishment of peace is what we two know.

If you are clear, about this matter, publish it in the press.

To Mr SEARANCKE, Magistrate of Waikato.- Your letter has come relative to the men who have been slain [got into trouble] at Ngaruawahia.

Son, they know that if it were now as formerly [i.e., if war were raging] they would not have returned by that way. They supposed that guns could be taken to Orahira without any intervention. They mad a mistake about this. Reaching Hangatikithe seeing by us was there [i.e. the Maories who met at Hangatiki some time ago from Lower Waikato, &c., were armed].

This is a word to you-you are a Magistrate. Allow them to come hither with their property [i.e. with the guns &c.] I did not act thus [i.e., did not retain possession of your warlike stores] formerly in reference to a gun which belonged to the Europeans, but then be it remembered the fire was still burning [i.e., the war was still raging], and I sent back a repeater gun which was taken by the Maoris at Kawhia. PATEA
Messengers to our Ahuriri natives arrived last evening from Patea, bringing Intelligence up to the 4th inst. The following is the purport:- The friendlies under Hate TAUTEKA had erected two pahs at Roto-aira. They were garrisoned by about 60 men, 30 of whom were Wanganui natives. Knowing the Hau-Haus to be in .their vicinity, scouts. were sent out to reconnoitre. The first scouting party sighted To KOOTI's party at Mapouriki, and then fell back and reported the circumstance. Mapouriki is a few miles north of Poutu. The next day another scouting party was sent out, but fell into an ambuscade and three men were taken prisoners. Through the interest of Taupo Hau Haus who have Joined Te Kooti, these three men were spared, however, and got away to their friends. The Taupo Hau Haus were invited by the three friendlies to.leave Te Kooti and come over to them, but they declined, saying they had committed themselves and could not do so.Scouts were still kept out by Hare TUATEKA and t! hey ascertained that Te Kooti's party had returned towards Moerangi. Meanwhile, HARE's party, not feeling strong enough, had retired back to Patea, at which place they were joined by RENATA and his 60 men.

Lieut-Colonel McDONNELL had also arrived from Wanganui with a small additional force, and more were expected to follow. It is believed that Lieut-Colonel McDonnell will head.the move against against Te Kooti. He is eminently fitted to do so, with a force such as is now available at Taupo.From Runanga we hear that Henare TOMOANA and his 120 men will leave there to-morrow for Taupo, and form a junction with the force under Colonel McDonnell. Kooti's present position is uncertain; he may have returned again to Waikato, or he may be hanging about the shores of the Taupo Lake, in which latter case we hope Colonel MoDonnell may he able to give some account of him.

Lient-Colonel McDonnell arrived in Napier last evening, but we have not heard of any later intelligence, beyond that four scouts left at Rotoaira by Hare Tauteka are missing, and are believed to have been killed. Lieut.-Colonel McDonnell returns to Patea this morning.

Educational Rate:- Numerous protests against the payment of the same from persons who say, and say truly, that there is now common school in Napier to which their children can be sent.

Trial of Rebel Natives- Against 3 natives alleged to have been concerned in the Poverty Bay Massacre, indicted for high treason under the Treason Felony Act.

Fire- On Saturday afternoon the house at Raukawa, owned by Mr J McDOUGALL, totally destroyed by fire. Mr Robert McDOUGALL and a married couple engaged as servants were on the premises at the time of the accident.

The Two dead bodies, to the finding of which proved to be the subject of an inquest and buried before Coporal FARMER, could reach the scene. One reduced to a skeleton is supposed to be the remains of Henry Edward WARK, who was committed to Napier Gaol on 4th Feb 1867 for burglary and forgery, and got a free pardon on the 10th August 1868, The other body was that of one ROBERTS, a shepherd in the employ of Mr DRURY, and well known in the neighbourhood.

A Stowaway- At Magistrates Court yesterday a man named Alfred SMITH was charged with being a stowaway on the steamer Wellington. SMITH find 3 pound and costs, and, in default, was sentenced to seven days imprisonment with hard labor.

Also a Column of Colonel GORDON- from telegrapahic summary of English news. Ssuggestion that he should be sent to New Zealand to organize a Colonial force. It appears that in England he is generally known as "Chinese GORDON". Very interesting account of his exploits.

Inquest was held at the house of Miles HUDSON, Wallingford, before J D CANNING Esq., J P., as Acting Coroner and a jury of twelve residents, (Mr MIDGLEY, foreman), over the remains of a body found on the entrance to the bush at Wallingford, on Messrs HUNTER's run, an adjoining the township sections, on the morning of the 6th inst. The following evidencde was adduced:-

William BARRU, sworn deposed- a sawyer working in the E'Parain bush. Discovered body.

Charles Robert ENGLISH, surgeon sworn, deposed- who examined the remains of a male subject.

There being no further evidence, or any proof of identity, the jury returned an open verdict of "found dead," there being no evidence to prove by what means he came to his death.

" IMPORTANT FROM TAUPO

Defeat of Te KOOTI.

The following important news was received last evening.

On Saturday, the 25th inst, Te KOOTI, with a force of between 280 and 300 men, attacked Tokano pah, which was held by a force of 249 friendlies, composed of the Hawke's Bay natives, the Arawas, and POIHIPI's people.

Colonel McDONNELL, who was on a visit to the pah, attempted with his escort, to reach Rotoaria, where KEMP's people were located, with a view of bring them up, but was unable to do so, being fired upon by the enemy. He then returned to Tokano and placed himself at the head of the friendly natives.

A severe engagement ensued, which resulted in the enemy being driven off. Cover after cover had to be evacuated, until at length he turned and actually ran for it.

The enemy left seven bodies on the field, and were seen to carry oof aa great many more. Their loss is reported to be 30 killed and wounded. The Hau Haus had plenty of ammunition- between 40 and 50 rounds of Enfield being found in the cartouche box of each dead man.

The fighting took place on a hill covered with high ferns and scrub, and rifle pitted. The friendly natives behaved exceedingly well; also Capt St GEORGE and Lieut. PEARCE, both of whom were in the thick of it."

ENEMY ATTACKED AND 35 men killed

Death of Capt. St. GEORGE.

Intelligence was received by the General Government agent, late on Wednesday evening, of a brilliant success gained by the Colonial forces under Lieut-Col McDONNELL over Te KOOTI and his band of desperadoes. The official detailed report is note yet received; but we learn that, after long continued delay consequent on the inclemency of the weather, our forces, on the Morning of Monday last, the 4th inst, attacked Te KOOTI in his position at Tutitauroa, a wooded hill at the north end of Rotaira Lake, when our men, European and native, gallantly stormed his position, which they carried, killing in the assault 35 of the enemy, including some of their principal leaders. Our loss, though small, includes, we regret to say, Capt. St. GEORGE; besides whom only two natives were killed and two wounded. Te KOOTI himself is said to have bolted when the Colonial forces were seen approaching. At the date of the despatch, Col McDONNELL was engaged in following up the Hau Hau force. While congratulating our readers upon this great success, it is sad to think it has not been achieved without severe loss, in the death of so gallant a officer as Captaian St. GEORGE- one who has always been foremost in the numerous engagements he has taken part in, and who has doubtless lost his life through that daring and chivalrous spirit for which he was distinguished. We are sure the settlers of this province- by whom the lat Capt. St. GEORGE was well known and musch esteemed as an early settler in Hawkes Bay- will deeply sympathise with his friends in the loss they have sustained."

We have since learned that Lieut. TUREI subsequently died of his wounds. On all hands we hear that this engagement was a most spirited and admirably conducted affair.

"On the night of Friday last, Lieut.Col McDONNELL, with five day's rations, entered the bush in quest of Te KOOTI and his remaining followers. He had been somewhat delayed through the overtures made by Te HEU HEU but ultimately, the sincerity of that individual began to be questioned, and the gallant Colonel started in pursuit.
Our natives, stimulated with jealousy of each other, were ripe for anything, and advanced with a steadiness and determination such as I have never seen before equalled. The Wanganuis set the example by charging up the face of the hill, on which stood the redoubt, closely followed by the Ngatikahungunu, and Arawas. Although exposed to the galling fire of the enemy, who fought well, our men had in a short time taken the trenches in the front and right of the redoubt, undermining the parapet, jumping up and firing into it. I deeply regret to state that Capt St GEORGE was killed within a short distance of the redoubt, whilst charging it with No 2 division and the Arawas. Shortly after this charge the redoubt was taken by storm, in which we lost three killed and three wounded. Twenty-seven bodies of the enemy were found inside the redoubt and in the trench, and ten more bodies were found in the field, making a total loss on their side of thirty-seven as seen by us. Over twenty ! women and children were taken prisoners, and one man belonging to Taupo. I regret to say that Te KOOTI escaped, as I know for certain he was in the Pa. Some of the women were severely wounded.
I have much pleasure in testifying to the gallantry displayed by No 2 Division A.C., under the command of Sub-Inspectors SCANNELL and NORTHCROFT, and also to Major KEMP, and Captains McDONNELL and WIRIHANA and the Wanganui natives under their commanc, who in this, as on every former occasion, behaved admirably. My thanks are also due to RENATA and Henare TOMOANA, of the Ngatikahungunu, and Hohepa TAMAMUTU, Paora HAPI, amd KEPA, of the Arawas, for the courage displayed by them in leading their men. My thanks are more especially due to Lieut-Col HERRICK, for the able assistance which he renedered to me during the day and in the furtherance of my plans. The cavalary succeeded in re-capturing a large number of the horses taken by Te KOOTI from Henare TOMOANA, at Tauranga some time since."

CORNISH "The only news from this place is of a painful nature. I regret to have to record the death, by accident of one of the Armed Constabulary. Yesterday morning, about 11 o'clock, as a man named Edward CORNISH was riding through the main street of the township, the horse made a swerve the rider was unable to control him, and rushed under the verandah of Mr CARTER's store the horse rushed at full gallop, the man's head coming in contact with the top. One side of his head was completely flattened, and he died in about an hour afterwards. An inquest was held this morning, when the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above."

"The native I wrote to you as having escaped from the lock-up, a week or two back is still at large, and no steps have been taken to re-capture him. I allude to the native WAATA. This course must have had a very bad effect upon the native mind, more particularly as regards the tribe to which he belongs.

LATEST FROM TAUPO

The following statement is made by Te HEU HEU in regard to Te KOOTI:-

"In the engagement of the 4th inst, Te KOOTI, whilst obtaining caps from his waistcoat pocket, was struck by a bullet, which cut one of his fingers completely off, and smashed his thumb and another finger, and passed through the fleshy part of his side. Te KOOTI, he adds, was barely able to escape, owing to the pain he was suffering from his wounds.

Te Kooti, had 50 of the Chatham Island prisoners with him, who suffered severely from the engagement. He had also some of the principal Urewera chiefs and their people, and had received a letter from HAKARAIA to the effect that he and his hapu were on their way to join him.'

Te HEU HEU, WITH SOME OF HIS WOMEN, ARE SAID TO BE ON THEIR WAY to Napier, in charge of Lieut. Preece.

Nothing has ben heard of the 500 Waikatos, reported in the Auckland papers as having left for Taupo.

Awfully sudden death at an early hour on Sunday morning. Mr H BURSTON Blacksmith, died with appalling suddenness. He got up at 5 o"clock in the morning to get a drink. He had no sooner done so when he called for his wife, she got to his assistance in time to assist just as was falling down. On being raised he was still alive, but death ensued in a few minutes. The cause is supposed to be sanguinous apoplexy. The inquest is printed on Page two of this paper.

HENARE and RENATA with their people now on way to Taupo and will probably arrive at Napier today.

Paori HAPI account previously referred to lies in a critical state- His wound is a severe one. Bullet entered lower part of the back and escaped through the thigh.

Particulars of unfortunate death of lad Leonard GOLDFINCH reached us. In travelling with HENAR's party whilst riding along a narrow bridge, he by some means went over the side with his horse and fell 30 to 40 feetto his death. Inquest on his body was carried out by Capt. TUKE- verdict- accidental death was returned.

Wellington- Death warrant has arrived for ione prisoner HAMIORA the other 2 East Coast prisoners have been sent to Penal servitude for life. Their names are Piri REWI and MARTIN.

They landed at western spit and proceeded to their destinations. Great credit to Mr St John BRANIGAN for bringing such a class of men into our midst.
