The Remains of the late Mrs Munn were, on Sunday last, followed to the grave by upwards of 280 persons, many of whom had come considerable distances to pay this last mark of respect to the deceased. A religious service was conducted, prior to the moving of the procession, by the Rev. P. Barclay; and at the burial ground by the Rev. H.W. St. Hill.

Married On the 31st July, at the Parsonage House, Napier, by the Rev H.W. ST HILL, Henney B. SKALY, Esq., Registar of Deeds, Napier, to Mary Caroline, daughter of the late George William LYNDON, Esq., of Gerard Street, London.

Fatal Accident On Staurday, the 28th ult., a boy of five years of age, son of Mr William AUSTEN, was drowned in the Kaikoura creek, near which his parents reside. The boy had been palying on the margin of the creek, which was much swollen at the time, the effect of previous rains, and is supposed to have missed his footing and at once been swept away. The body had not been recovered at the time of our informant leaving.

The Influenza As the prevailing epidemic is termed, is rapidly spreading throughout the native disticts, and is being severely felt. We have heard of no less than 13 deaths among the native population - one at Petane, four at Pa Whakairo, one at Pakowhai, one at Waipureku, three at Pokawa, two at Te Aute, and one at Waipawa. Of this number, one was Hineirangis, the principal wife of Te Hapuku, who took ill and expired during the absence of that chief at Auckland, while he was taking part in the native conference.

On the 15th (Wednesday) A. MACNEIL was committed to the District Court on a charge of "unlawfully and maliciously attempting to kill certain cattle the property of one Wm. BURTON" - the defendant having laid poison for them on account of their trespassing.

On Thursday, Edward WATT was charged with a breach of the Post Office Act in having used a postage label which had been previously defaced. The fact was admitted, but it being evident that the stamp has been used in mistake, a norminal fine of ten shillings was inflicted - the maximum penalty for this offence being 50 pounds.

On the 18th ult., a private of the 14th named Patrick NOONAN was committed to trial before the Supreme Court, Wellington, on a charge of having, on the 11th ult., burglariously entered the whare or dewelling house of Edward KELLY, with intent.

And on the 25th, William WILLIAMS was sentenced to three months' hard labor for stealing a bucket, a pot, and a spade, the porperty of Wm. VILLERS.


Inquest was held before Thomas HITCHINGS, Esq., coroner, and a jury, upon the body of Thomas BOSTOCK, late cook at the Havelock hotel; who died on Tuesday (5th) evening at 5, believed to be from the effects of strychnine administered by himself. Post mortem examination held upon the body by Dr KING, unmistakeable symptoms of the presence of strychnine were discovered in the stomach and intestines. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased killed himself by poison when laboring under temporary insanity.

Annual Licensing Meeting The annual licensing meeting took place on Tuesday last, but was postponed till Wednesday. Fatal Accident
On Saturday last a private of the 14th, named Patrick MAHER was drowned opposite Mr BUXTON's house, between the Royal Hotel and Onepoto. He was intoxicated at the time; and having been refused more drink at the Victoria hotel or some other house, in hopes of getting supplied there. The water was very high, and the space for walking on being very narrow , as well as rough, he would appear to have missed his footing and fallen in. Miss BURTON saw the accident and ran to the spot, but the deceased was not again seen, having probably been at once swept away by the strength of the fresh. The body has not been recovered, and it is not likely to be, as it is supposed to have been carried out to sea. The deceased was a fine athletic man and a good soldier; nor was he by any means an habitual drunkard.

Inquest An inquest into the death of Patrick MAHER was held at the Victoria Hotel before Dr HITCHINGS, coroner, and a jury. The body was recognised by three soldiers of the 14th, with one of whom deceasedhad been drinking. Miss BURTON testified to having seen the deceased struggling in the water and to having run for assistance, but without avail. The jury (of whom Mt MUNN was foreman) returned a verdict of "accidentally drowned" and added the following rider:-- "The jury think it important taht Hyderabad raod should be made to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents".

Legal Hi Honor Mr Justice JOHNSTON has appointed Mr John Mathaniel WILSON and Mr. Brooke TAYLOR, both of Napier, Solicitors of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, to be Commissioners for taking acknowledgments of married women of deeds executed by them under the Fines and Recoveries Act of the Imperial Government.

Napier Gaol
It will be seen from an advertisement in this morning's Herald, that steps are at last about to be taken towards the erection of this much wanted public building.

Juvenile Depraviti On the 8th inst., a boy of ten years of age named Thomas MASTERSON was sentenced in the Resident Magistrate's Court to one month's imprisonment with hard labour for stealing the sum of £3 5s from his employer, Mr DOHERTY, baker.

District Court Monday July 22
George SINCLAIR was indicted for stealing a teapot, the property of H.S. TIFFEN,
Esq. Mr WILSON, as Crown Prosecutor, supported the charge; the ptisoner was defended by Mr ALLEN. --The jury found the prisoner not guilty.

James Lane was charged under a recent colonal statute with having fraudulently converted to his own use a horse entrusted to him as bailed. The indictment also contained a count for stealing. --The prisoner was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment.

John BANNON was indicted for stealing a tent, of the goods and chattels of John Lambton CARTER. In a second count the tent was laid as the property of John LINGARD. --A verdict of not guilty returned by jury.

Tuesday July 23 John WILKS was charged with having, on the 22nd February last, stolen a saddle, the property of Edward Watts. --The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

Thursday July 25 Tuke vs. Smith -- to recover £21 10s for rent.

Smith vs. Atkinson -- the plantiff sought to recover the sum of £25, for a horse sold and delivered by him to the defendant.

New Magistrate H.B. SEALY, Esq., and J.B. BRAITHWAITE, Esq., have been added to the Commission of the Peace for the Province of hawke's Bay. They took the oaths on Friday, and officiated, for the first time, on Saturday last.

Legislative Council We observe that the seat in the Legislative Council vacated by the resignation of Captain CURLING, has been filled by Colonel RUSSELL, who took his seat on the 2nd inst.

New Justices
The Hon. Colonel Andrew Hamilton RUSSELL, and Capt. Andrew Hamilton RUSSELL, both of this province, have been gazetted justices of the peace for the colony of New Zealand.

Woman Beating
On Thursday(29th), at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Barnay Dowd, cook at the Golden Fleece, was fined £5, or in default of payment, ordered to be imprisoned for two months with hard labour, for brutally beating a female with whom he cohabited, named Catherine McEVOY. He was also ordered to find sureties to keep the peace for three months.

Voluteer Corps A press of matter prevents us from doing justice to the meeting held on Tuesday evening(27th), in the Council Chamber, for the purpose of forming a voluteer corps. Capt. CURLING occupied the chair. Several persons spoke upon the subject, and the proceedings resulted in the appointment of a committee to carry out the objects of the meeting
- such committee to consist of Capt. CURLING, Messrs. FERRERS, ALLEN, J.A. SMITH, JANISCH, CHARLTON, MALTBY, RICHARDSON, BLAIR, KENNEDY, and H.L. SKEET.

Furious Riding A Maori was last night locked up, charged with the prevalent and dangerous offence of riding furiously through the streets.

Earthquake A slight shock was experienced last evening(2nd) at 8 o'clock.

Resident Magistrate's Court
The number of civil cases adjudicated upon during the week has been very large, but few of those would in any way interest a newspaper reader.
Four drunk and disorderly cases have also come before the bench. On Tuesday, Whaitapu, a native, was fined 5s., or, in default, 24 hours imprisonment, for drunkenness and furious riding the day before. He pleaded guilty and was committed, but subsequently he managed to raise the wind and pay the fine. The same day John BENNETT was charged with a similar offence. He admitted his fault - stating that some friends of his had been having a parting cup together. This being his first offence he was fined only 5s. On the 4th, Barney DOWD appeared to answer a charge of drunkenness and violent conduct in the streets. Fined £1, or, in default, 48 hours imprisonment on bread and water. Yesterday, John ANDERSON received the same sentence for a similar offence; he paid the money into court.

Accident at the Waipureku Punt
On the afternoon of Friday the 20th inst., a horse and loaded dray, the property of Mr Charles SUTTON, backed into the river while being taken across in the punt. The horse, as may be supposed, was drowned; and the load, (consisting of coals etc) lost; but the dray and harness were after sometime recovered.

Napier Gaol
We find from the Gaxette published yesterday(27th) that Mr Wm. MILLER'S tender for the eredtion of the new gaol (£1050) has been accepted; and that those of Mr TRESTRAIL (£1234) and Mr McSWEENEY (£1070) have been rejected.

Public Nuisance
Mr E.G. WRIGHT, as agent for Lieut. BATES, appeared at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday the 17th inst., to answer a charge laid against him by the Inspector of police for depositing refuse of a very unwholesome kind upon certain premises abutting on Waghorn street. The case was adjourned till the 24th, when it was quashed in consequence of defendant having mean while taken measures to remedy the nuisance.

Police
We regret to learn that Corporal GROOM - so long connected with the Napier police, has been dismissed from the service in consequence if inebriety whilst on duty.

New Magistrate The name of E. CATCHPOOL, Esq., has been added to the Commission of the Peace.

Inquest On Wednesday last an inquest was held at Mr MACARTHY's residence, Petane, before T. HITCHINGS, Esq, and a jury, upon the body of Mr J. Campbell Donald McDONALD, who was found drowned on the previous day. The jury (of which Mr MACARTHY was foreman) returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned".

Mr Brooke TAYLOR has been appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court and Administrator of Integrate Estater.

Inquest An inquest was held yesterday afternoon (Nov 11th), at the Royal York, before T. HITCHINGS, Esq., coroner, and a jury, on the body of Ellis MOSTYN, a private of the No. 3 company, who doed the same morning under the following circumstances :- On Sunday (Nov 10) at 8pm, he was brought to the barracks in a state of intoxication, and locked up in the guard room. He was visited once or twice during the night by the men on guard. About 1/2 past 8 he was again visited, and found to be apparently dead. The jury (Wm. PARKER, foreman), returned as their verdict that deceased came to his death from pulmonary apoplexy, ossasioned by drinking.

The Elections

Waimarama District
The Election of one member took place on Wednesday 6th inst. There were only two electors present, besides the Returning Officer. Mr E.S. CURLING the proposed, and Mr Alfred CHAPMAN seconded, Mr Donlad GOLLAN as a fit and proper person to represent the district was declared to be duly elected as there being no othe candidate.

Te Aute District
Nomination for this district took place on Thursday the 14th inst., in front of the Government Buildings.
Mr T.D. TRIPHOOK was proposed as a candidate by Mr Michael MULLANEY, seconded by Mr G.A. BRYAN.
Mr Thos. EDWARDS was proposed by Mr Robert FRANCE, seconded by Mr M. MULLANEY.
Mr William COLENSO was proposed by Mr John STEVEN, seconded by Mr William REARDON.
Mr John WILKINSON was proposed by Mr Robert FRANCE, seconded by Mr R.M. SKEET.
Mr H.L. SKEET was proposed by Mr Charles ALLEN, seconded by Mr J. DOHERTY.
The candidates then came forward, in order of nomination, to address the meeting. The Returning Officer was about tpo take the show of hands after everyone spoke when Mr John BEGG was proposed as another candidate by Mr William MILLER, seconded by Capt. BLAIR.
A show of hands was then demanded for the respective candidates after Mr BEGG spoke. A good number appeared for Messrs. TRIPHOOK, COLENSO, and BEGG; a few for Mr WILKINSON; and one or two for Mr SKEET and Mr EDWARDS respectively.
The show was declared to be in favour of Messrs. COLENSO and BEGG; and a poll was demanded on behalf of the other candidates. The poll takes place this day.

Porangahau
Nomination for this district (on Monday the 11th inst.,) resulted in the unopposed return of J.D ORMOND, Esq. Mr ORMOND was proposed by Mr D. HUNTER and seconded by Mr Alfred LAMBERT.

The polling for the Napier district took place on Saturday (16th) last.

C.W. LA SERRE, Chief Officer of Police in the Province of Hawke's Bay appointed to institute proceedings for certain offences against the "Arms Act, 1860" Lieut. BATES, of the 65th regt., late of the detachment stationed at Napier, appointed Native interpreter to the forces at Otahuhu camp.

BROWNE v CARSWELL
This was an undefended action to recover £77 10s, the amount of a promissory note. Judgement was given for the amount claimed, with interest and costs.

BROWNE v WILLIAMS This action was to recover on the same promissory note - defendent having endorsed it. judgement for plaintiff, with interest and costs.

GOLDFINCH v McSHEESNEY Plaintiff sought to recover the sum of £95 for timber supplied defendent as contractor for the erection of the Church of England. The Court reserved its decision; and on the following day decided that the service was invalid.

Mr CHAMBER, by consent of both parties, was appointed arbitrator over case heard in Dec 1860, between the following.

DOLBEL v G. & G.B. WORGAN Plaintiff sought to recover the sum of £32 8s 6d. for Blacksmith work, also interest on outstanding account.

Inquest It will be remembered that, sometime ago, three soldiers were drowned, and the bodies found of only two. That of the third was discovered a day or two ago, at the mouth of the river, and an inquest was subsequently held upon it - verdict the same as before.

Death from the Effects of Intoxication On Saturday last a man named HIGGINBOTHERA, who had gone to sleep at Mr SIM's house, Mohaka, in a state of intoxication was found to be dead. There is no coroner for this district, but a formal enquiry was made as to the cause of death, when a verdict was returned of "Died by the visitation of God".
