on a farm. Mrs Abraham died aged 100 and left 20 grandchildren, 82 great

He owned several Staghounds BOYD, JAMES on the Council in 1907 BRADDOCK, CATHERINE b, 1891 died 1922. BRECKLES, in the 1897 cricket team. BRUNEL, CHARLES a ex-naval man, gold prospector, whaler and shepherd. set up a steam saw-mill in the 1870s. His mill shut down in 1917 BRUNEL. GEORGE tried the Whaling Business, but sold out in 1869 BULLEN, brothers came from England via Victoria. They made their money selling merchandise in Victoria and Otago..and brought land. They completed building their Homestead in 1875..Frederick Bullen retired and returned to England abt 1883. In 1907 G.F Bullen sold out to a Syndicate of 5 men. He retired to ChCh where he died in 1912 at the age of 80 BURLAND, B sec for the kaikoura river board 1893-1911. BURLAND, Miss E sec for the River board 1912-1919 BURNS, M successful applicant for a run at Hundalee in 1897 BUTT, T a taxi driver in a model tin 1914 CHARLESTON, JOSEPH a whaler and shepherd.. opened the travellersRest Hotel in July 1862. He gave up the Hotel in 1868 and farmed for a few years before moving to the North Island CLEMENT, CHRISTOPHER in Kaikoura in 1865 CLEMENT, A.T a motor coach service in the 1900s CLOSE, ALBEN took charge of the travellers Rest Hotel sometime after 1868. He pulled it down in 1871 and built the "Adelphi" which was destroyed by fire in March 1918 CLOSE, TINY there in the 1900s COAKLEY, J.L store keeper at Waiau in 1887. He brought land in 1887 COLE, HENRY repaired shoes and boots in 1869 COLLINS, A.S a county chairman 1887-98 COLLINS, Miss E.M teacher at Oaro in 1922 COOKE, W had a store in 1900 COOKE, WILLIAM on the county council in 1907 COOKE, THOMAS born 1881 . killed at war in France in July 1916. He was awarded the V.C posthumously. CRISP, N was in the Kekerengu Rugby team in 1898 CROSS, ANDREW fished at South Bay for a living CROSS, HARRY in the area in 1910 CROXHALL, GEORGE drowned in the Clarence river in Oct 1847 CUMMINGS, A ran a coach service in the 1880s CUNDY, Mrs JANE managed the Kekerengu accommadition house for a time CURRAN, P a taxi driver in a model t in 1914 DAKIN, F.F est the1st flax mill with W.D.STACE but were adjudged bankrupt after 2 years DANAHER, T.J a Teacher DAVIDSON, HUGH at kaikoura in 1901 DAVIDSON, J opened a store in July 1867 DEE, MICHAEL applied for a small section at Hapuku in the 1880s DERRETT, T he had a coach service till 1916.also a halfway house. he died in 1825 DICKENSON, T on the road board in 1880 DICKSON, THOMAS leased 9,000 acres of rugged country in 1868. He developed it and kept it for 11 years ECCLES, E.H brought Claverley Station after the 1st world war and held it till 1947 ELVY, H.W a station blacksmith at Kekerengu in 1887 ELVY, W in the Kekerengu Rugby Team in 1898 EVANS, CHARLES erected a Hotel in 1865 EVANS, CHARLES applied for a small section at Hapuku in the 1880s EVANS, CONNIE at Kaikoura in the 1900s FITZHERBERT, WILLIAM a Whaler FLINT, FRED and W in a fishing group in 1906 FLOWER, F.H storekeeper at South Bay ..also worked at flax milling in 1898. he was one of the last flax millers at Kaikoura FLOWER, NELL and ELSIE in the 1900s FLOWER, FRANK a "Star" repeorter in 1907 FLOWER, J.N was a manager of a bank in 1880 FRANCIS, E sold his coach line to T Butt in 1917 FLETCHER, J.F a doctor in 1869 FLOWER, A.E born 1874 FULTON, JAMES & CHARLES cousins. ran a wool-scouring business in 1878 FYFFE, ROBERT. He owned 2 Whaling sites at Kaikoura.in 1845.. He was born 27th Feb 1810 and died (drowned) in April 1854. He also owned a Run. FYFFE, GEORGE a cousin of Robert Fyffe. George died in 1867 GALLAGHER, JAMES and MARY. mary died 1892 aged 43. James died 20th Nov 1900 GARRETT, WILLIAM GEORGE started a flax-mill abt 1886 GARRETT, MARY LUCY b, in Kaikoura.the dau of Joseph Garrett. Mary married hugh O,Donnell in 1900. GARRETT, HELEN a sister of Mary ? GERMAN, JOHN a Station Hand in 1857 GERRAND, W. an old settler GIBSON, WALTER managed the accommadation House at Clarence.in 1865. He married William McRaes widow. GILLING, ABE son of a early kaikoura Whaler GLENNON, JOHN a Bullock drover in 1857 GOLDEN, JOHN was a reverend in Kaikoura in the 1900s GOOCH, E.G.T a Manager at "Swyncombe" GOOCH, JIM in a fishing group in 1906 GOULTER, PERCY and HAROLD had farms GRAY, JAMES a smithy in 1863 GRAY, NELL there in the 1900s GREENFIELD, ALFRED applied for a run in 1856. He had arr at Nelson in 1851 on the "Clara". aged 22 years and helped drive a mob of horses from Nelson to Amuri for John Tinline. In sept 1859 he transferred his run to the Keenes. HAGGAR, CHARLES a builder in 1869 HAILES, WALTER and sons had Bullocks for contract work HAMMER, THOMAS farmed on the South Bank of the Conway in 1851 HARMER, JIMMY had a hut at Fyffe Cove in 1915 HARMON, BOB and EMERY arr Kaikoura 1859 and took up land HARRIS, WILLIAM manager of "Flaxbourne' in 1854 HARRIS, L.L came from Picton in Jan 1868 to start business as a store keeper. HASWELL, D in the Cricket team in 1897 HAWTHORNE, MARK had a farm in 1878 HENDRA, RALPH Jnr on the Kekerengu Rugby team in 1898. Ralph was born at Blenheim in 1876. HERBERTSON, AMY there in the 1900s HOME, J.T a teacher till 1868 HORNEMAN, J.E had a coach service from 1907 till abt 1911. HUMPHREY, FRANK a shepherd in 1857 INGRAM, BESSIE there in the 1900s INGLES, H.A marr a Miss CHIENE on the 14th July 1875 INGLES, HENRY was in partnership with his brother..They had been to court 2-3 times as a result of not looking after their sheep properly. and their whole flock of 5,000 sheep had to be destroyed. INGLES, ALEXANDER WRIGHTON and brother henry and CLINTON PASLEY brought the Puhi Puhi run in 1862.Clinton dissolved the partnership with the brothers in 1869 and died the next year aged 29. JOHNSON, JIM in the area in 1917 JORDAN, SAMUEL was a horse breaker in 1853 KEENAN, A chairman for the River Board 1924-50 KEENAN, P a councillors in various years from 1893 to 1910. KEENE, CHARLES EDMUND of Swyncombe, Oxfordshire and brother GEORGE arr Nelson in 1858 and moved to the Eastern side of the S.I, taking up land near the Conway,which they held until 1869 KENNEDY, ANGUS had a run at Mt Fyffe LAUGESEN, CHRISTIAN LOUIS a Dane with 9 sons and two daughters arr in 1892 from Canterbury and started a timber mill. In 1895 the father retired and sons William, Walter and Louis carried on the business LAUGESEN, WALTER in the area in 1910 LAUGESEN, T and L.V lost their lives in the 1914-18 war LAURIE, A had a store in the 1870s LOVEGROVE, G.T station Manager in 1865 McCALLUM, DOUGAL had a coach service McINNES. JOHN Jnr and ALEXANDER applied for sections at Hapuku in the 1880s McINNES, J owned a Wheelwright shop in 1869 McLEOD, WILLIAM applied for a section at Hapuku in the 1880s McLAUCHLAN, A on the Kekerengu Rugby team in 1898 McLAURIN, JD started milling timber in 1880. he went bankrupt 3-4 years later McRAE, WILLIAM died at Waipapa in 1870. His widow remarried Walter Gibson McSWIGAN, J in the Cricket team in 1897 MACALISTER, SUTHERLAND a Postmaster in 1869 MACKLE, M.A and J.A leased land from 1915--1917 when the boys joined the army. J Mackle lost his life in the first world war. MACKLE, BARNEY on the Council in 1907 MACKLE, H a chairman on the river board from 1897-1917 MADDOCK, C.M on the road board 1879-84 MARKS, M.L came from Picton in 1868 to start a store MARSDEN, JOSEPH installed a rabbit-canning factory in the 1880s MASKELL, WILLIAM "Mead Hill" run in 1865.. he was 20 years old when he arr at Canterbury in 1860 from Cornwall, and brought a run and 1,500 ewes MAW, CORNELIUS started a fish and meat works at Kaikoura which was burnt down after a few months in June 1887 MAXTON, S.W had a store in 1886 was a councillor in 1881 thru to 1902. MAXTON, ANNIE successful applicant for 215 acres in the Mt Fyffe district in 1898 MAXTON, S.W on the road board in 1882/3. he had a store in the 1870s MEADOWS, H.M a Doctor in 1874 MERTON, Miss S.M a teacher in 1915 at Lynton Downs MILLER, JOSUHA drowned on the 21st Jan 1861 MISSEN, JAMES was a shoemaker MONK, RICHARD rented 63 acres at the Conway. She was the widow of John O,Donnell O,DONNELL, BRIDGET 1st married Denis Sweeney. her 2nd marriage was to Arthur Jennings in 1888. Bridget died 28th Aug 1915 ODONNELL, JAMES gave 2 acres land for a church and school in 1880 OVEREND, W had a store in 1870s PAAP, J was a Constable in 1869 PALMER, ROBERT a shepherd for Joseph Ward at Clarence PALMER, CHARLES brought a horse powered flour mill to Kaikoura in 1864 PALMER, CHARLES OSCAR & EDMUND OSCAR applied for sections at Hapuku in the 1880s. Their father was Charles Palmer. Parents were David Victor and Catherine ( Starkey). Catherine Sophia was b, 30th July 1897 at Kaikoura. Her parents were Martin and Catherine (Norton)Starkey.
