Photograph Courtesy of D. June Cox (granddaughter of Daniel
Wirt Cox).
Daniel Wirt Cox, is my great-grand- father. He is the eighth of ten children born to Philip and Susan Cox, born 27 April 1839 in Harrison County Va.

He enlisted at Harrisville, Ritchie County, WVa, in Company E, 6th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry on 18 Aug. 1861. He was a prisoner of war from the 30th of Apr to 30th of Oct. 1863. He was honorably discharged on 10 Sept. 1864 at Wheeling, WVa.

On Oct. 9, 1865 he took for his bride, Elizabeth Virginia Goodwin, they were married in West Milford, Harrison Co., WVa.

The couple had twelve children; Lola Susan, Charles John, Elizabeth May,
Maggie Jane, Frances Wirt, Albert Kendall, Clara Virginia, Howard Warden, Harvey Hamilton (my grandfather), Martha Viola, Calvin Newton and Wesley Russell.

In his later years Daniel spent a lot of time researching his family genealogy from which much of my research is taken.

At the age of 87 years, 9 months and 7 days, he died on Feb. 3, 1927, and is buried in the Chevauxdefrise Methodist Church Cemetery, near Washburn, WVa.

{Note} This photograph of Pvt. Daniel Wirt Cox, was taken at Cumberland, Maryland in July 1864, while he was in the Union Army.
