Tempe -- Memorial services for Betty Acuff Baca, 70, who lived in Arizona since 1924 and died Jan. 4, 1982, in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, will be in Dayspring Methodist Church, 1365 E. Elliot. Mrs. Baca lived in Tempe since 1945. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1929 and attended the University of Arizona. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and Rolling Hills Ladies Golf Association. Surviving are her husband, Ambrose; children, Noel Matlock, Wendell P. BACCA, Anthony R.

Sun City -- Anthony R. Bacca, 67, who served as a band master for 27 years in the Army before retiring, died Dec. 23, 1982, in Valley View Community Hospital, Youngtown. Mr. Bacca was born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and moved to Sun City in 1978 from Woodbridge, Virginia. He was a member of the V.F.W., Sun City Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion, the Sun City Concert and Polka Bands. He is survived by his wife, Molly; daughter, Marney Hale of Virginia; sons, Ronald of Kentucky and John of Phoenix; and two grandchildren. Rosary was at Menke Funeral Home. BAKER, Cassie M.

Cassie M. Baker, 73, a deputy U. S. Marshal in the District of Arizona for 35 years, died Nov. 13, 1982, at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Mrs. Baker, 527 A.E. Roanoke, who was born in Washington, D. BAKER, Kenneth J., Sr.

Kenneth J. Baker, Sr., 79, a retired carpenter for the U. S. Civil Service, died Thursday, September 30, 1982, in a Valley hospital. Services for Baker, a Glendale resident, were private. He was born in Jersey City, N. J., and moved to Arizona four years ago from California. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. Servivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Kenneth, Jr.; and one brother. The Arizona Republic Saturday, Oct. 2, 1982.

BAKER, Maude

Maude Baker, 83, retired real estate broker and former owner of Baker Realty, died Dec. 3, 1982. Mrs. Baker was born in Blackburn, England, and moved to Phoenix from London, Ontario, in 1951. She was supervisor of the elementary school music program in London, a church organist and choir director and soloist. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly J. Marshall; sons, James J., William G., and Robert W.; a sister; and 15 grandchildren. 12/5/1982.

BAKER, William A.

Dr. William A. Baker, 90, who practiced dentistry in Phoenix from 1920 to 1967, died Dec. 31, 1981, in Doctors Hospital. Dr. Baker, of 207 W. Clarendon, serviced three years as chairman of the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners. He was a charter member of the Phoenix Executives Club and served as its third president. He was former dental chairman of the National Advisory Committee to the Selective Service and was a chairman of the Phoenix Civil Service Board. Dr. Baker was born in Ewing, Illinois, and came to Arizona in 1918. He graduated from St. Louis University Dental Department in 1916 and served as chief dental surgeon, at two Army base hospitals from 1917 to 1920. In later years, he took graduate courses at schools in Illinois and Colorado and in 1958, at age 67, completed a year at Baylor University post graduate school for peridontology and received a bachelor of science in dentistry. Dr. Baker was a member of the staffs of Valley hospitals, local and national professional organizations, the Methodist Church, El Zaribah Shrine, Phoenix Hiram Club, Luke-Greenway American Legion, Arizona State University Foundation, Phoenix Country Club, Arizona Club and National Council on Crime and Delinquency. Survivors include his wife, Beulah ROBBS BAKER; son, Dr. William D. BAKER; stepson, A. B. ROBBS, Jr.; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Private services at A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary. BALDWIN, Clifford L.

Services for Clifford L. Baldwin, 77, who came to the Valley in 1910 and retired from the U. S. Postal Service in 1969, were Monday in the First United Methodist Church of Phoenix. Mr. Baldwin, 1694 W. Glendale Ave., was born in Whittier, California, and died Dec. 23, 1981, in Beatitudes Campus of Care. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School and Phoenix College and earned a bachelor's degree from Whittier College. He had been a manager for Bayless Markets several years. BALDWIN, John Edward Northrup

John Edward Northrup Baldwin, 71, a self-employed handyman and gardener, died Dec. 23, 1982, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Baldwin, of 9612 N. Central, was born in Columbia, Oklahoma, and moved to Phoenix from Hayward, Calif., where he was a rigger at the Mare Island Navy Yard in 1949. He served eight years in the Navy aboard the cruiser Astoria and battleship California. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Maryvale Chapter No. 19 and member of the National Association for Retired Federal Employees. He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Bertha Buck; sons, John H. and Amos; two sisters, Ruby Morgan and Teenie Slaton; and seven grandchildren. Carl R. Bartel, 56, assistant dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Arizona State University, died Dec. 7, 1982. He was born in Hillsboro, Kansas, and moved to Arizona 14 years ago from Turkey. He received bachelor and master of science degrees from Kansas State College and a doctorate from the University of Missouri. He served in the Navy during World War II. COolidge -- Pansy K. Bartlett, 88, a former school teacher, died Nov. 29, 1982, at Pima General Hospital in Florence. Mrs. Bartlett was born in Breckenridge, MO, and graduated from Stevens College, Columbus, MO. She moved to the Coolidge area in 1916 to teach school. She homesteaded 160 acres before moving to Florence after World War II. She was the wife of the late state Sen. Archie Bartlett of Pinal County. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Darden; son, Worth K.; a sister and a brother; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. George William "Bill" Bates, 61, security director for Marathon Steel, Globe Security and Wells Fargo Security, died Dec. 16, 1982. He was born in Bremen, KY, and moved to Arizona 10 years ago. He served 20 years in the Marine Corps and retired in 1972 as master sergeant. He was a World War II veteran. BIRD, Thomas C.

Scottsdale -- Thomas C. Bird, 67, a wood plant industry inventor and a design and consulting engineer with O'Malley's in Phoenix, died Nov. 17, 1982. Mr. Bird was born in Great Falls, Montana, and moved to Arizona 10 years ago from Eugene, Oregon. He was reared in Butte, Montana, and graduated from the School of Mines in Butte in 1939. He also graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1941 with a degree in chemical engineering. He was associated with Trans Engineering Corp and served in the Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Madeleine O'Malley; sons, Thomas C., Roger K. and Robert W.; a sister, two brothers and three grandchildren. George C. Birk, 84, a core maker in the foundry business, died Dec. 26, 1982, in Phoenix Memorial Hospital. Mr. Birk, of 725 W. Southgate, was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona 20 years ago from Illlinois. He is survived by his wife, Lela; daughters, Blanche Rhoades, Barbara Woods, and Lee Marini; and son, George C., Jr. Graveside services were at Resthaven Park Cemetery. Nellie G. Birks, 82, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1982. She was a native of Peru, Illinois, and moved to Phoenix in 1979. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, IL. She is urvived by a daughter-in-law, Madeline Racobs; grandchildren, Keith and Bane Goodman and Marilyn Holley; one great-granddaughter, Heather Holley; and two step-grandchildren, Jeff and Tighe. 10/15/1982.

BIRNBAUM, Martha

Martha Birnbaum, 74, died Nov. 20, 1982, in a Phoenix hospital. The Wisconsin native moved to Phoenix three years ago from Oelwein, Iowa, where she was a delicatessen manager. She was retired for the past nine years. She is survived by sisters, Elsie Buenzou, Francies Sprauge, Anna Brewer, Evelyn Kuchera, Marion Richards, Agnes Dibble, and Iona Dhorman. BITTER, Charles Raymond

Sun City -- Charles Raymond Bitter, 86, a professor of bacteriology at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1929 to 1964, died Dec. 21, 1982. Mr. Bitter, of 11153 W. Palm Ridge Dr., received his bachelor's degree from the University in 1929 and his Master's Degree in 1931. From 1924 to 1928 he served as research assistant at the National Jewish Hospital in Denver and since 1964 had been professor emeritus at the University of Colorado. Mr. Bitter served in the Army during World War I. He was a member of the American Legion, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, Alpha Phi Omega, Phi Delta Chi, American Society of Microbiology, Old Time Athletes Association, the Sun City Stamp Club, Square Club and Scottish Rite. Survivors include his wife, Naomi; son, Charles; one brother; one sister; four grandchildren and a great-grandson. Services at St. Christopher Episcopal Church, Sun City. Menke Funeral Home. BLACK, Angela

Angela Black, 92, a retired employee of Bouman Hospital in Fort Bliss, Texas, died Nov. 15, 1982, at a Valley hospital. Mrs. Black, 1117 N. 24th Pl., was born in Texas and moved to Arizona in 1978. She is survived by her brother, Belen Solis and her sister, Paula Padilla. Mass was at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 909 S. 1st Ave. Graveside services were at St. Francis Cemetery, 4800 E. Oak. Sun City -- Marguerite Sue Black, 73, a retired payroll clerk for the federal government, died Nov. 26, 1982, at Boswell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Black, 19844 Concho Circle, was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and moved to Arizona in 1962 and to Sun City in 1965. She was a member of the Sun City Church of Christ.
