Fred W. Haase, 81, a retired truck driver, died Oct. 9, 1980, in DOctors Hospital. Mr. Haas was born in Chicago and came here in 1970. Survived by wife, Margaret; children, Geraldine Maas, Fred Haase, Peter Statler, Edward and Eugene Chesney; 13 grandchildren. 10/11/1980

Mary Hafler, 68, who retired from the Northrup King Co. in 1976, died Sept. 29, 1980, in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs. Hafler came here in 1957 from Newark, Ohio. Husband, Edward; children, Mary Sue Henschell and Robert; six grandchildren. Published in the Arizona Republic Thursday, October 2, 1980.

HAKES, Frances Rae

Frances Rae Hakes, 55, who was brought to Mesa as a child, died Jan. 29, 1980, in Doctors Hospital. Mrs. Hakes is survived by her children, Charles Lee Hamilton, Steven R. and Gary Lynn; brother, M. Eugene Hamblin; and two grandchildren. Mesa City Cemetery. Published 1/31/1980.

HALCOMB, Virgil B.

Mesa -- Rosary for Virgil B. Halcomb, 59, who had been a telephone service man with Mountain Bell in the Valley 20 years, was in Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School, Scottsdale. Mass was in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7601 E. Main, Scottsdale. Mr. Halcomb, 2410 E. Fairfield, died Sept. 29, 1980, in Mesa Lutheran Hospital. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Marie; children, Donna Davis, Midland, TX, and Richard and two grandchildren. Interment Queen of Heaven. The Arizona Republic Wednesday, October 1, 1980.

HALL, Benjamin H.

23 Jan 1889 - 4 Oct 1980
Benjamin H. Hall, 92, who retired as an insurance executive and moved here in 1960 from Detroit, died Oct. 4, 1980, in St. Joseph's Hospital. He was a World War I Army veteran. Survived by his wife, Mary. Services were in First Institutional Baptist Church, 1141 E. Jefferson. Burial Greenwood. Universal Memorial Center. Oct. 8, 1980.

HAMMONS, Ronald Richard "Dick"

Ronald Richard "Dick" Hammons, 48, a certified structural steel worker and a general foreman for Marathon Steel, died March 11, 1980, in Fort Morgan, CO, where he was on a construction project. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and came to Arizona in 1976 from CA. He was a member of Sheetmetal Union Local 108, Iron Workers Local 433 and Elks Lodge in CA. Surviving are his wife, Natalie; children, Pamela S. Glass and Ronald L.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Hammons; two sisters; a brother and a grandson. Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery. 3/16/1980.

HAND, Daniel W.

21 Mar 1922 - 24 Mar 1980
Tempe -- Daniel W. Hand, 57, who came to Tempe in 1939 and operated Dan's Car Wash for 10 years, died March 24, 1980. Mr. Hand was a transmitting engineer 26 years for KPNX-TV and also worked five years with KOB-TV in Albuquerque. He served in the Navy in World War II and later was involved in V-2 rocket experiments in the Nevada desert while employed by North American Aircraft Co. He was instrumental in converting the old railroad spur in Tempe to the present Terrace Road. He was a member of Tempe Masonic Lodge and El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix. Wife, Nancy; children, Sharron Ross, Linda Jean Adams and Harold F.; a sister and two grandchildren. Services were in Grace Community Church. 3/26/1980.

HANEY, Walker Lee

20 Feb 1932 - 7 Mar 1980
Walker Lee Haney, 47, lived in Phoenix 40 years before moving to Los Angeles in 1974. He was struck by a car Aug. 27, 1979, and died in the University of Southern California Medical Center March 7, 1980. He had been an auto mechanic. Wife, Dorothy; children, Walker III, Walteree Marie and Sandra K. Haney; two grandchildren; six sisters and three brothers. Services were in St. John Institutional Baptist Church, 1428 S. 13th Ave. 3/15/1980.

HARDEN, Mary J.

Tempe -- Mary J. Harden, 57, died Oct. 4, 1980, in Desert Samaritan Hospital. She was born in West Virginia and came to Arizona in 1950 from Ohio. Surviving are her children, Patricia Daugherty and Douglas Oren; and six grandchildren. Services were at the King of Glory Lutheran Church, 2085 E. Southern. Monday, Oct. 6, 1980.

HARKNESS, Mary Beth

Mary Beth Harkness, 62, was born in Lovington, New Mexico, and died Oct. 8, 1980, in Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a past president of the Women's Gold Association at Pinnacle Peak Country Club and was a member of the Albuquerque Hearing & Speech board. Friday, October 10, 1980.

HARPER, Almer

Almer Harper, 67, died Jan. 20, 1980. He moved here 32 years ago from Louisiana. Wife, Ida Mae; children, Almer, Jr., Carrie McLaurin, Connie Maxwell, Johnnie Sanders, Shirley Bryant, Essie L., Clifford Elizabeth, Celestine, Truecile and Mary Ida Harper; a brother; 37 grandchildren. Services were in Second New Salem Baptist Church, 1850 E. Grant. 26 January 1980.

HARRIS, Donna

Glendale -- Donna Harris, 79, who was born in Columbia, S. C., died Oct. 11, 1980, in Maryvale Hospital. She came here from California in 1979 and had been an apartment manager. Her husband, Russell, survives. Graveside services were in Resthaven Park, 6290 W. Northern. 10/15/1980.

HARRIS, Ella J.

Sun City -- Ella J. Harris, 88, who lived in the Valley eight years, died Jan. 27, 1980, in a Phoenix hospital. Children, Nancy Kilgore, Marjorie Mangen, Dorothy Showell and David; 15 grandchildren. Published 1/30/1980.


HARTNETT, Harry J.

Mesa -- Harry J. Hartnett, 42, a truck driver who had been employed by National Car Rental, died Jan. 21, 1980, after a long illness. He moved to Arizona 17 years ago from Pittsburgh and was a member of the Masons in Phoenix. Wife, Brenda; sons, Harry D. and Francis; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartnett; a sister and a brother. 1/25/1980.

Ella J. Hatch, 63, who came here 31 years ago from Denver, CO, died Jan. 24, 1980, in her home. She worked in the cafeteria at The Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette. Husband, Sam; daughters, Esta Portnoy, Marilyn Reid and Carol Sowers; two sisters; two brothers; three grandchildren. 28 January 1980.

HATCH, George P.

George P. Hatch, 88, who was born in Taylor and came to Phoenix in 1945, died Jan. 26, 1980, in his home. He retired in 1966 as cemetery superintendent of Memory Lawn Memorial Park. He served four missions for the LDS Church including Alabama from 1968 to 1970. Wife, Dora P.; children, Glena Sherwood, Jean Fiet, Dixie Rose Amberson, Anita LaRee Simons, Quola Mae James, Afton Fkaje, Vloe P. Black Canyon City -- Clyde W. Hatcher, 48, of Black Canyon City, was born in Savage, Montana, and died Oct. 3, 1980, in Prescott Veterans Hospital. Mr. Hatcher had been an auto serviceman for new car dealerships in Phoenix. He served in the Army in the Korean Way. He came to Arizona in 1960 from Oregon and lived here six years. Survived by wife, Geraldine; daughters, Carlene and Glennis; stepmother, Vivian Hatcher; a sister and three brothers. Monday, Oct. 6, 1980.

HATHAWAY, Elma L.

Elma Hathaway, 84, who had been a practical nurse for 50 years, died Jan. 25, 1980, in John C. Lincoln Hospital. She moved to Phoenix in 1952 from Saratoga, Indiana, and was a member of Valley Heights Baptist Church. Daughter, Virginia Prescott; a sister; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. HATMAKER, Michael A.

Michael Hatmaker, 21, died Oct. 11, 1980, at his home. He was brought here as an infant from Ohio and recently worked for St. Regis Paper Co. Survivors include daughters, Lorene and Jacquieline; mother and stepfather, Lorene and Thomas Compton; three sisters and two brothers. Graveside services were in East Resthaven Park, 4310 E. Southern. The Arizona Republic Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1980.

Vera Sarah Haygood, 76, who moved to Arizona 35 years ago from Oklahoma, died March 11, 1980, in South Phoenix Emergency Center. She is survived by her children, Elnora Mims, Marion, Richard, and Chester; 16 grandchildren; a brother and four sisters. Interment Greenwood Memorial Park. Webber & Sons Mortuary. 3/15/1980.

HAZLEWOOD, Marguerite H.

3 Sep 1907 - 28 Mar 1980 (SSDI spells it "Hazelwood") Prescott -- Memorial services for Marguerite H. Hazlewood, 72, who died March 26, 1980, in Phoenix were at The Ruffner Funeral Home. Mrs. Hazlewood, a Texas native, moved to Young in 1930 and to Prescott in 1942. Survivors include a son, Earl; three brothers; two sisters; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Chandler -- Emmett Hearn, 83, a World War I veteran, died Oct. 14, 1980. Mr. Hearn moved to the Valley in 1959 from Omaha, NE, where he retired from the Civil Service at Offutt Air Force Base. Wife, Mae; brother, Clark; sisters, Mrs. Hazel Rosenbaum and Miss Gertrude Hearn, all of Missouri Valley, Iowa. Services and burial were in Missouri Valley, Iowa. 10/15/1980.

HECKATHORN, Harry J.

Tempe -- Services for Harry J. Heckathorn, 71, who came here 28 years ago from Pennsylvania and was a retired retail sales clerk, were in Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden, Scottsdale. Mr. Heckathorn, 2401 W. Southern, died March 12, 1980, in Tempe Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Hilda; sons, Richard or Tempe and Robert of Apache Junction; two grandchildren; a sister, Grace of Florida; and a brother, Francis of New Guinea. Interment Green Acres Memorial Gardens. The Arizona Republic Thursday, March 13, 1980.

Upton L. Hemphill, 82, was born in Jackson, MS, and died Oct. 9, 1980, in Hillhaven Health Care Center. Mr. Hemphill came to Phoenix in 1935 from Texas. He was a cotton shipper from 1920 to 1940. Survived by his wife, Ernestine. Friday, October 10, 1980.

HENDERSON, Louie

Louie Henderson, 76, who played two years with the Paul Whiteman and 18 years with the Wayne King Orchestras, died Oct. 1, 1980, in St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Henderson came to Phoenix from Chicago in 1955. He worked for the AZ Driver's License Burear eight years before retiring. He was a member of Arizona Umpires, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Police and the Federation of Musicians unions in Chicago and Phoenix. Wayne King attended the Hendersons' 50th wedding anniversary here in January. Wife, Dorothy; children, Norine Tone, Dorothy Ratajski, Geannine Hiefner and Charles; a sister; 16 grandchildren. Madge Hendricks, 82, a native of Centerville, Iowa, died oct. 13, 1980, in a Phoenix care center. Mrs. Hendricks moved here in 1962 from Chicago and was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church. Survived by daughter, Virginia VanVugt; stepson, John Hendricks; five grandchildren. Memory Lawn Cemetery. 10/15/1980.

William M. Hendricks, 67, a machinist who moved to Phoenix in 1975 from Springfield, Ohio, died Sept. 25, 1980, en route to Maryvale Samaritan Hospital. survived by wife, Tresa; children Arletta Smith and Robert L. Hendricks. Double Butte Cemetery. 2 October 1980.

HERRING, Lula Mary

Lula Mary Herring, 78, was born in Bellemont, near Flagstaff, spent most of her life in Arizona, and died March 16, 1980, at her home in Aurora, Colorado. Mrs. Herring graduated from Flagstaff High and what is now Northern Arizona University. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Clarkdale and the Lutheran Church. Husband, Carl; a son, Carl R.; a sister survive; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. Services were in Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Aurora. 3/29/1980.
