I have been frustrated trying to sort out my CLARKS. My ggg-grandfather was Barnes C. CLARK, who I think was born in N. C. abt 1775-80. My gg-grandfather, John G. Berry, married his daughter, Harriet Caroline in 1824 in Tennessee. The CLARKS came to Texas in Feb. 1836, apparently to the Red River/Fannin Co. areas. Barnes received a Land Grant, but it was in what was later to be Smith Co.! The BERRYS came to San Augustine in 1837.

By 1839, Both Barnes and his wife Rachel were deceased. Guardianship was awarded in 1839 to three minor daughters: one to the BERRYS and two to Calloway and Mary DEEN (another daughter). Later Calloway DEEN, an attorney handled the legalities of the estate of both Barnes and Rachel CLARK and also Alfred CLARK who settled in Red River Co. (I think.)

I have identified what I think are 7/8 children of Barnes and Rachel CLARK. Among them are Harriet Caroline (m. to John G. Berry in TN in 1824),

John (who came to Texas with the BERRYS),

Angelina, Britten, Emily, Cassandra, Barnes Jr., and Alfred (maybe).

Now it gets complicated. The LDS library has a Barnes CLARK born in 1798. He is too young for my Barnes and too old for Barnes, Jr. Barnes Jr. died in 1849 while crossing the Ithmus of Panama (Blake Papers), so he is not yours!

Nancy Ussery/McMills was the widow of Alfred CLARK and a participant in both the estate of Alfred and Barnes, Sr. (in 1839 for Barnes and 1844 for Alfred - Blake Papers). Therefore, I concluded that Alfred was probably the eldest son of Barnes and Rachel CLARK. The other Barnes you saw in Harrison Co. in 1860 could be the son of Nancy! He would be abt 30 years old at that time.
