The Toledo Asylum was built on the cottage plan. The architect, Edward O. Fallis, was one of Toledo's most prominent architects. The "detached wards" (32 in number) included larger hospitals for the seriously ill and separate buildings for moderately disturbed patients. The buildings shared a 150 acre complex with lakes (lagoons), a chapel, an auditorium, a greenhouse, and other service buildings. The original construction cost was $664,880, and the Asylum had room for more than a thousand patients.
The original buildings and the lakes and lagoons were destroyed in the 1970s. An unrelated concert venue now bears the name Toledo Asylum.
