Almshouse and Insane Asylum

Salem, New Jersey

Salem County, NJ has an intact Almshouse and Insane Asylum dated 1845 and 1870, respectively.

The buildings are owned by the county, are vacant,and endangered. They are located in a county complex of buildings inMannington Township, in a rural setting. A burial ground is somewhere nearby but not marked. The Insane Asylum is a brick building on a square plan, in a simple Italianate style, with a belvidere on top. It is connected to the earlier Almshouse. The county has no plan for the buildings, though Preservation Salem, Inc., the local historic preservation group, has advocated for preservation of the property.
