Many state hospitals have been converted in recent decades into prisons. Rusk State Hospital is an example of a prison that was converted in 1919 to found a state hospital.
Rusk State Hospital was originally a facility for the African-Americans with mental illness, and admitted 600 patients in its first year. By 1946, the patient population was pver 2,400. By 1992, a trend of dowsizing had resulted in a population of 442.
