"Fox River Asylum" is the name given to the psychiatric ward area of Fox River State Penitentiary in the United States television show Prison Break (2005 - ). Fox River State Penitentiary is also fictional. The closed prison in Joliet is used as the filming location for the TV show.
The Fox River is located in northeastern Illinois, to the west of the Chicago metro area. Elgin, the former home of Elgin State Hospital is also located along this river, to the north. It should be noted that the use of the name "Asylum" for the ward in this prison is antiquated: the majority of the institutions that called themselves asylums changed their names 100 years ago to "State Hospital" or another name.
