Ionia Asylum (Historic Asylums)

Fairfield State Hospital ("Fairfield Hills")

Newtown, greater Danbury area, Connecticut

Established 1933, now closed.

In 1932, the Fairfield State Hospital (more recently "Fairfield Hills"), an institution for mental patients, opened on an 800-acre campus at the edge of the Newton. Facilities included a large farm, a sewage treatment plant and a dozen major buildings as well as staff housing. In 1998, Fairfield Hills consisted of 100 buildings on a 185-acre campus. The Newton community currently has plans underway to find new uses for the complex. Architecturally, the buildings of the complex are more interesting than many other institutional buildings built during the 1930s.

The Kevin Bacon connection....
The 1995 Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt and Robert DeNiro film "Sleepers" was filmed here.
